Why LASER weapons are so unrealistic in Fallout?

Post » Tue Mar 22, 2016 4:08 pm

Dear friends,

I, personally, love LASER weapons. Don't know why, but I did. But... they have to be that unrealistic?

First, recoil. Need to say something?

Second, the "goo" effect. Always when a LASER based weapon shoots, there are lots of "sparks" and also a weird spread of light (in all directions) in the gun. LASER light are perfectly parallel, they are one single trace, one direction. Not that thing that looks like a liquid being shot. Sometimes, with auto LASER rifles/pistols or with the Gatling LASER, that weird spread are so big that you can't see the target (when in 1st person). I have to stop shooting to see if the target is still there. Is REALLY annoying.

Third and last, the LASER leaves a trace in the air after being shot. The light (travelling at 3.108 m/s) doesn't "remain" in the space. Just shoot with the Gatling LASER and walk to the sides to see what happens. This is really... really fake.

There's some chance that Bethesda makes the LASER based weapons a little more real?

Thanks

Because Fallout is unrealistic?

But in a word with giant bugs, little green man, power armor, people take 20 bullets to kill, we can survive a nuke blast to the face, and I can go on complaining about laser weapons not being realistic is kinda silly.

The mere idea of hand held laser weapons is pretty freaking unrealistic to begin with, so none of the problems you brought up really bother me. Also Fallout has always pushed (and past) the boundaries of real world physics/science.

Laser weapons are unrealistic in general, because they're fake.

I'm not getting in another fight about realistic lasers, so peace.

Consider Fallout runs on 1950s SCIENCE! Mentality they seem quite appropriate.

Plus out of a entertainment standpoint most average folks would most likely find realistic lasers boring. Blame decades of sci-fi media.

At least the complaint wasn't "immersion breaking". That's a bonus.

It's a game, opie. Sometimes, you just need to accept a game as fun, not necessarily realistic.

Actually hand held laser weapons are one step closer to being a reality for the U.S. military.

The United States Navy has rail guns they successfully fired on their battleships.

The United States Air Force (U.S.A.F) has successful lasers on their big airplanes that can shoot missiles down from about 100 or so miles away.

1. When you put the quantum harmonizer in the photonics resonance chamber it causes parabolic destabilization of the fission singularity. Which is just a fancy way of saying there will be recoil in the gun.

2. The energy output from the fission source causes the human retina (what an unsophisticated organ) to sometimes misinterpret the light direction and can cause confusion is users of energy output devices.

3. The trace is quite simply ionized air.

Science! says it's more fun.

Also: "Laser" is a word nowadays, like "scuba" (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus). You don't need to write it as "LASER". In fact, that makes it seem like you're shouting "LASERRR!" But that can be fun too.

Cool, hand held lasers!

Rail guns are not lasers.

Yeah, mostly by overheating essential components on the rocket. Ingenious if it works consistently.

I never said the rail gun is a laser all I said is the United States Navy has successfully fired rail guns on their battleships.

Rail guns were science fiction until I don't know about ten years ago?

Rail guns are now a reality and soon hand held lasers will be.

The US Navy doesn't have Battleships. The last one, the USS Iowa, was decommissioned 31 March 1992. Just saying.

Aircraft carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, whatever they are they are still ships.

I will still call them all battleships because they are ships used in wars for battles therefore battleships.

Since, in reality, laser weapons are mounted on ships, i don't think Bethesda were going for realistic when they made them handheld.

The Navy has an operational laser weapon that can shoot down missiles and aircraft. It requires a ship to power it, however.

A ship can generate enough electricity to power a small town. I'd say hand-held laser weapons are still a few years off.

"Battleship" describes a specific class of ship that is no longer in service.

If you want a generic term I would suggest "warship".

The United States military is closer to having hand held laser weapons though.

in the next ten years? Or who knows when.

Our government spends millions of dollars (USD) on Research and Development (R&D) on this stuff. Heck it's hundreds of millions of dollars (USD) or billions of dollars (USD).

oh my god, this is like the third thread this week about unrealistic lasers

Look at literally every science fiction aspect of the fallout setting, and that will tell you exactly why lasers aren't realistic. Nothing in these games is realistic.

Look its freaking amazing that Lasers exist as a mounting on vehicles but that doesn't rule out that these devices cause insane amounts of heat that would fry a person using a handheld laser based weapon.

Hand held laser weapons don't exist (yet), but soon they will.

I'm not sure if the laser guns in the Fallout video games will be representative of how they will work in real life.

But when we get hand held laser weapons in real life they will work with fiber optics.
