Why I live in Alchemists shack, and why YOU should too...

Post » Tue Dec 31, 2013 11:30 pm

- A free house right after leaving Helgen Keep

- Safe container beside the bed

- Alchemy station

- Good location in the rift forest, not far from Ivarstead.

- Easy fast travel no seperate loading screens just getting into a city then into your house.

- Free respawning food and ingredients

- No thug attacks like Hearthfire homes.

- Living outside of a town makes you a FREE MAN.

It has everything you need, so why not go live in Alchemists shack and save some gold.

And no forced Killcams!

It doesn't have any smithing areas like Breezehome, so it's a no from me. Its a nicr area though.

Nice house but my character is not only into alchemy but enchanting and heavy blacksmithing.

... but I'm not playing an alchemist! But seriously, that sounds good. I recently used Anise's cabin outside Riverwood which has both an alchemy station and an Arcane Enchanter. You can use the storage in the cabin (apparently the barrel outside is not safe) or you can enter the cellar and use the storage there. The cellar is a little dingy but you just drop two or three torches and the place perks rights up! There's also a paralysis potion down there (don't know if it respawns).

Edit: I got annoyed with it however, because the closest smelter is in Whiterun so smithing in Riverwood is not practical

It's nice for more wilderness-oriented characters. It's not so convenient if you don't fast-travel, though.

I use The levelers tower mod (though i do not really use any of the actual cheating part of the mod, just the normal house stuff, the organization, and once in a while the enchantments) as my home for most of my characters, why should i use such a rundown, little, old shack when i have a massive dwemer tower right near Helgen. :D

I will stick with my marsh house. Has everything I need, close to stores, and marsh.

Is that a mod?

^ This. Also, I don't utilize alchemy much, aside from an occasional potion or two to top stocks up.

Currently using the Expanded Towns ands cities mod, which provides free player housing in a number of locations, including Riverwood, Falkreath and Ivarstead. Plenty of storage, along with enchanting and alchemy tables, a forge and a smelter. They do have everything I need.

Anise's Cabin is actually better, sans a smelter. It's about a 30 second sprint to Riverwood to smith and the cabin comes with both Arcane and Alchemy tables. Of course, "evicting" the current tenant is required. For those who fast travel, no additional load screens are necessary if stuff is stored in the top floor only.

Plus, the convenient factor is there to get to Whiterun. Running behind the road, down the hill, it takes about 2 real minutes to run to Whiterun. :D

Exactly! And killing the witch won't count as a crime if she attacks you first, which she does after you tour her basemant. But even if you did kill her on sight no one would see. One of the few cons to living secluded in the woods and not being Dragonborn... :D

I prefer to stick to my luxury apartment in downtown Solitude (i.e. Thalmor Headquarters).

Yeah but not in the beginning of the game. It's perfect for when you first get out of Helgen.

My currently active character lives, hidden away, in a great big hole under the ground. Just the place for a thief/murderer to hide.

Agreed. In my current character I've decided not to fast-travel at all. Almost level 30 and haven't fast travelled once. Finding a home is quite difficult as it ideally has to be near a carriage stop off point. I chose the abandoned house in Markarth for that reason - storage, bed and a nearby smelter and smithing area.
