Why magic weapons?

Post » Mon Nov 30, 2015 7:16 am

I just got Assassin's Hunting Rifle in a loot which does extra 50%, I assume, "magic" damage to humans. I thought it's pretty weird so I googled around and it looks like Fallout 4 has lots magic weapons - double barrel shotguns which doesn't have to be reloaded, miniguns shooting fire damage bullets, rifles shooting 2 bullets at once, etc. What's the deal with that?

I remember those old grumps at NMA called Fallout 3 Oblivion with guns, but this one is clearly Skyrim with guns. Is there any reason why unique loot gets magic instead of some reasonable bonus - like slightly bigger damage or whatnot? It's just baffling to me.

Oh and legendary raider - mutating? I would understand super mutant or some weird wasteland creature pulling this off, but raider. Why would human "mutate" his health up.

They're just gameplay mechanics. The legendaries mutate to make them tougher enemies. That simple.

Fallout 2 did have ghosts and you have the Dunwich building in fallout 3, and aliens in all the early installments...so I guess supernatural things can be considered canon for fallout.

...but a legendary radroach carrying around a magic sniper rifle is by all standards quite silly indeed...

Edit:

On the other hand it could all be related to jet-intake rather than actual magic...

As is how Dogmeat stores a Fat Man and 37 Pipe Rifles...

It's a game mechanic.

Aliens are not supernatural, they fit the Fallout 50's theme of science fiction. Dunwich building and ghosts however were isolated and quite silly occurrences, but magic weapons as part of unavoidable gameplay mechanic is very unique addition to Fallout universe, and quite unnecessary too. Whats wrong with unique weapons as they were implemented in previous installments? It just baffles me that anyone would think that a good and fitting idea.

Not really comparable. Unless you go hardcoe and carry only one weapon and sidearm with you some inventory silliness is unavoidable, but this is completely facultative silliness.

That's actually my idea for my next guy. Single rifle, pistol, and a knife, only picking up money to sell and a few pieces of food/water. A couple stimpacks could be kept on his person but not the 78 I have on my current one. If he finds a backpack then he can start collecting a little bit but not nearly what he can now.

Sure your dog can carry a Fat Man and 37 Pipe Rifles, last time I did Jet I saw a Bloatfly performing "Something's gotta give", but it wasn't actually called "Something's gotta give", it was called "Saw her yesterday"...freaky I tell ya...

I've still also yet to use any of those 'magic' guns. Pretty easy to ignore them if you want

It's loot. Everybody loves loot.

My only issue is that you cannot scrap them and have to haul them over to a vendor to get rid of them.

To be fair, and I disagree with the OP... but... you can't mod a real life weapon to have an unlimited clip or do more damage to a particular type of species xP

It's radiation damage. Humans are the only ones affected by it.

Wut? Just about every game that features loot as a major element does this. Destiny, Borderlands, Diablo, the list could go on and on.

I would also argue that unique loot doing more damage or holding more ammo in the clip or w/e would be magic itself. Why is that weapon doing more damage? Where's the extra pew pew coming from?

You can modify real weapons to make them more powerful, so in your example it's not magic...on the other hand tho, I got some laser pistol that does double damage..if the target is at full health...wtf that got to do with anything..basically my next round can magically tell if the dude I'm shooting at has full health or not..oh well, I welcome these 'magic' weapons...fun to find...fun to mod...and fun to use!

There is a Dunwitch mine or something filled with ghouls and flashbacks. None of this bothers me.

Eh, I'd have to disagree with you there on the real weapons part. You can definitely modify real weapons but if you're talking about guns you can't really make them more powerful. You can change what load of ammo they can use, you can make them more accurate, you can add assisted aiming devices but (barring different load ammo) you can't really make most of them more powerful. A .308 is gonna shoot a 308 round the same every time at least in terms of power. You can change the bullet but the only thing modifying the gun is doing is changing accuracy and peripheral stuff.

Since when has fallout ever been realistic? There giant roaches, scorpions and people who are zombies but not really zombies.

All of those things could be possible in 2077. It's not infinite ammo btw it's just a way to feed ammo directly from your inventory into the gun without reloading. Think of a stationary machine gun.

Yea in the ammo...rounds with more gun powder..and magnum rounds..add more power to the gun essentially...same as a slug vs. buckshot for shotguns...same gun but more power..

Personally? I kind of prefer having the odd unique weapons that does something slightly off the wall. I'm sure there's a line to be drawn somewhere, but nothing ive come across in 4 really bugs me.

(Then again I'm not really bothered by "magic" clothing either.)

Only really "magic" ones to me are the unlimited ammo & "fires extra shot" ones. At least that I've heard of. The rest just seem like super-quality versions like the previous game had.
