With magic, anything could happen. Whether it's through potions, being frozen in time, traveling through time, be stuck in another plane where time flows differently. Plenty of ways for M'aiq to make it to Skyrim.

And whatever his explanation is, you can guarantee it ain't the truth.

I hope he is not in Skyrim. The only reason they put him in games is to explain why features are missing. So hopefully Skyrim will have everything.

Eh time travel can easily be explained in a world of magic.... I am going to remake my character. He was a paladin, one who has faithfully served the gods in all their needs. I am simply just going to say that when Mehrunes Dagon died in that flash of light it was powerful enough to warp him ahead in time, though he is not sure where in time he is, nor does he even know that he got warped. He will just continue serving the gods in this new mysterious land. However I plan on using this character in most every TES game I play so the real story is going to be that hes the gods favorite and they warp him around time to different events that he is to help solve but he isn't aware of this himself. It's good enough for me at least.

M'aiq is an aspect of Hermaeus Mora, and is thus immortal.

I have a very simple solution which adds him back on one of his travels seeking calipers, he stumbled upon a tomb where he found a magic caliper, but it was cursed. The caliper was ment to be enchanted to last forever and never be broken, but a stupid wizard made it so everything that grabbed it became immortal as well. See? easy
