Why mod (cheat) game?

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 4:01 pm

Why people use mods that affect gameplay, like triple damage or infinite money and such, or why would you want to display all locations on the map? When you play MMORPG you could obviously use it as an advantage over other players, but in single player game like Skyrim... what's the point? Im not talking visual mods or UI/Performance improvements, these are obvious.

Just a random thought.

Cheers.

Some people like to RP in different ways. Archers might want to have an insta-kill all the time to make them feel like Legolas. Or somebody might want to play a rich thane with limitless fortunes. As for map locales...thats just time saving once you've beaten the game once or twice. I hate starting a new char and not having all the locations I've already been to on the map.

not all mods are to make things easier, most of the current Skyrim ones are to improve the graphics.

People are different. Some like the satisfaction of doing things on their own and some just like to say they did something even if they put no effort into it. Whats fun for you may not be fun for somebody else. Some like blondes some like brunettes, people like different things. That is why I love single player games, nobody else in there to ruin my fun like right now OP you are trying to ruin somebody elses fun. get it?

Why should everywhere in a province that has been settled for centuries be totally unknown, you can't buy a stupid map?
In Skyrim you apparently can't console togglemapmarkers(tmm) to the option: shown but not explored.
It's either all hidden or all explored, I seem to recall it being otherwise previously.

As far as infinite money/etc goes, some people aren't looking for those kinds of challenges.
I know I'll occasionally use a console command when something incredibly stupid (or glitchy) happens.
Or if I need 6 more gold to buy something, but the merchant is out of gold...

I think modding is one of the things that this makes Oblivion and Skyrim so great. It might have been on Morrowind aswell but i never used mods in it. Making your own stuff that you feel is needed or downloading interesting stuff you feel is an upgrade to your type of gameplay makes the game very flexible. One example that i loved from Oblivion was a Cloak Addon, wich allowed my character to wear cloaks, with and without hoods. The most common and easiest mod you can make is your own house. You can use the excisting houses from the game or create the whole thing from scratch. These things might seem overrated to you but for many of us, i believe its what makes us keep playing the game.

It's a single player game, you can't cheat. If people want 10000 gold to pretend they came from a wealthy background, then they're free to do that.

But cheating can be so fun!
Don't you ever just want to godmode on that crappy giant blocking your way?
I could probably speedrun through the entire game to the finish---or not! So exciting. The choices :)

Don't even need modifications for the examples you listed above, console commands can do all that.

Im playing through my first time now, so i wont use cheats, even for gold. For my next characters on the other hand... i will walk out of Whiterun at level 1 with the best gear Whiterun can offer, i think =)

Didn't you hear of that new thing called 'different preferences'? Yes, people can actually disagree with you. How dare they!?

Not all mods cheat, some increases realism of gameplay, like for instance cant carry all the golds you want or gold weight mod. Ever like to carry around a camping gears and camp different places when the skies get dark? Perhap fishing and camping? There so many good things can be in mods :)

I manage to disabled the compass in my expert game, feel much better here while playing it. I know its not a mod :tes:

Also this more likely for PC users for mods.

Why I like mods:

Better textures
Better UI (eventually)
More challenging gameplay (in that I prefer mods that make the game MORE challenging... ie. more "realistic," which is entirely subjective, but for me makes the game more immersive, so entails no "cheating")

In my opinion, the stock game levels too fast and is too... helpful, in the way of items and money. I can buy a house in a few hours of play, which kinda kills the immersion for me. I know lots of people don't like it MY way, but chances are someone will make a mod that does almost exactly what I want... make the game longer and harder to play, and that's why I like mods.

Heh, Bethesda's mechanics give you more than enough avenues to basically cheat at the game. You don't need any modifications or console commands to break the game.
