Why Morrowind still best of the series!

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 2:12 pm

Sure Skyrim looks way better graphically and engine wise , in the atmosphere and also in the quest realism and coherence ... but ... gameplay wise , density , complexity and RPG features Morrowind is by far superior , this skyrim I am liking , and actually liking a lot but , it has been too much simplified I dunno why , too much cutting of the good things of ES series and too much flattening of the gameplay in sake of a supposed better and fastr game imersion .... but actually like that it feels more like the simplicistic fable series than the elder scrolls one ...

The fact is weird that thy wanted to simplify to attract a wider audience ( like kids and easy players ) bu it failed in that giving a more flat gameplay and experience , and since the game is targetted to mature then it fails in the very basic purpouse ...

This will not end well.

Funny I haven't seen anyone say Oblivion is better :lmao:

while I agree to an extent, I just think Skyrim needs a few things to make it top of the top, it has alot of things going great to me, atmosphere, setting, wonder, wandering over all sorts of crazyness, I mean crap at level 15 some giant Mega Dwemer Bot came out of a wall. Morrowind can't top that lol.

but I also agree, the game is so damn simplified, I mean crap could they have atleast left the attribute modifiers from Fallout? since this is pretty much from the advancements from Fallout 3, don't believe me? then why is there a Command code for pipboy?

Eh, the combat in Morrowind is so bland, I prefer Skyrim.

You're very fast to draw that conclusion. I'll have to wait a few months before I judge Skyrim in comparison to Morrowind. All I can say right now is that I love Skyrim and think it's surely better than Oblivion and probably every other game out there, except maybe Morrowind.

This. Morrowind definitely has awesome qualities, but it had horrible ones too.

Funny, I thought the RPG elements Morrowind brought to the table were very awful, and only befitting of min/maxers. I'm glad to see the grindyness gone again.

After Skyrim, all Morrowind really has going for it to me is the story and characters. Everything else is done better in other games.

I have! There's a new breed of Oblivion nostalgiaphytes cropping up here and there.

I've never played Morrowind myself, but the main thing I'm missing from Oblivion (which is also a part of Morrowind and many RPGs) is STATS. They shouldn't have gutted the system of stats. I'm talking of Strength, Intelligence, Agility, etc. This sort of stuff may seem like just a bunch of numbers, but to older players such as myself they DO add and define who my characters are from Day 1. I'm missing this aspect. The way it is now in Skyrim, all characters start off more generic.

1. Wait for mods.
2. Wait for DLCs/Expansions.

Then judge. Morrowind is a complete game. Skyrim -- it's just the beginning.

Fact : Skyrim eats Morrowind's face (cookie for those who know the reference here). I still love Morrowind, but the only thing Morrowind has better than Skyrim is the Nostalgic feeling. Ok... maybe spears and crossbows meh.

Haha, he said that Morrowind's "gameplay" is better.

3/10, dude.

AMEN

Gameplay maybe not the true word.
RPG is more like it.
Anyway, the only thing Skyrim has bette is graphic, combat is same as Oblivion.

Skyrim objectively offers superior content to Morrowind. Take off the nostalgia-glasses, please.

It's a reference to IGN's Dark Souls vs. Skyrim article. Now give me that cookie, I'm hungry.

The usual PR talk here would be "streamlined, not simplified". I feel it's somewhat pertinent here, tho.

I would be against the removal of attributes or skills in any system... but TES. Streamlining makes sense in this department because there's no real choice - it's simply a matter of grinding. It's not like Acrobatics or Athlethics would have been something exclusive - everyone would eventually cap them, as long as they wanted. Customization is meaningful as long as it implies choices, otherwise once again it's merely grinding, and while some grinding is part of the RPG experience, what was trimmed in Skyrim was justified.

Now if what you're going at is the Magicka - Health - Stamina, and how it would be probably better to have a system that gives you more than 1 point per level and several stats (agility and strength for example) to put them into, well I could agree, but isn't almost every game like that?
Skyrim's leveling feels somewhat fresh to me. Yes, it's very simple but still flexible and enforces meaningful choices which is something very few games as of late do. It reminds me of the Souls games - few, radical choices that matter in the short period.

I tried playing Morrowind ages ago but couldn't get into it, a bit too slow for my liking. Oblivion came along and I didn't play anything else for months, the same is happening with Skyrim now. I keep wanting to call it Oblivion for some strange reason because it "feels" like it.

Once the modding community kicks off it will bring a whole host of more awesomeness to it.

You do realize that Skyrim has been released, right?

I can honestly say, from the bottom of my heart, that all of you people who consider skyrim to be better than morrowind; you're all kids/casuals.

no, it's just nostalgia.

What did this "depth and complexity" that Morrowind's system gave that's missing in Skyrim?
What are the things that are impossible to you because there are no attributes?

So every character is the same, like many people claimed before? If so why are there so many posts asking about your character, and why are the answers still just as diverse like in other TES games, if not more?

Does the game require no thought at all? Are there no choice, the game is linear?

No, really, what is this thing that we lost because of "simplicity"?

I don't do 'this' posts either, but heck, let's do it once. THIS!+++++

Except that I've compared it to Morrowind already on many occasions. :( Mostly that they have similar magical feeling in them every other game I've played is lacking, among them Oblivion in its sterility and too little environmental variation.

Basically KorVegor's post is all I should've said so far. That is: I freaking love Skyrim!

edit: Hah, if you're 10 minutes away from your comp and then post, ~10 new replies have already been posted. :I

As someone who's been playing fundamentally every W and JRPG released since 1987 and a few dozen PnP RPG systems on top of that, I retort that there's fundamentally nothing Morrowind did for the hardcoe than Skyrim doesn't improve. Bells and whistles don't matter, what Skyrim trimmed was luggage.

I wouldnt go that far. Ive been playing since Morrowind and the verdict is still out on if Id rank Skyrim higher. There are certain elements (regenerating health for example) that are keeping me debating. Doesnt make you a casual if you like the overall game better though. I enjoy every type of game there is

I think i prefer Morrowind too.

I dont think it winds hands down though.

I think the graphics and action part of the combat is won easily by Skyrim.

I think the atmosphere, world, storyline and characters have both games on an equal standing.

Morrowind winds with mechanics, there is just more choice, more feeling of character improvment, more types of loot and loot slots and more to do.
Morrowind also wins with UI but then most DOS games beat Skyrims UI. Im thinking it might be more user intuative to play Skyrim on an abaccus. It might be easier. (PC statement only)

Over all i think i prefer Morrowind, but considering i generally dont like dumbed down games, Skyrim is really good.

Hmm, I'll give you a 7/10. Mostly because I enjoy the irony of the kids/casuals comment.
