Why do most people choose female characters?

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 6:31 pm

Ok so i was going through a post on here where people were uploading pics of their characters and i relised that most people had chosen a female charcter to play with. I've got nothing against it and am even quite tempted to do it myself now. just wondering why?

Desire to look at something attractive vs desire to roleplay as yourself.

I'm a male, I'm far more interested in boobs than biceps. Hence, I play female characters because they are more enjoyable to view in 3rd person.

Most people do not choose Female characters. Most people posting on those threads choose to post female characters. It is a subset of a of subset of subset (people with a PC/mods, people on the Beth forums, people posting pics on that thread...with a priority on posting their most beautiful characters).

Aw hell, I don't know. I never play female characters, most seem rather boring and bland to me.

A not insignificant number of people want their character to look good. A not insignificant number of people think females are better looking. :)

For me I haven't felt any pressing need to play female. Skyrim does a better job than most games of making females look serious instead of like prosttutes, but they're still not all the way there.

I have no idea, but I could never do it, because I can't get into the role of a female without feeling dirty.

I dunno, though I think it has something to do with the bioware games where I prefer the VA's.

Yep.

Over the past few months, there were a whole bunch of "will you play male or female character" polls. They all pretty much came out to 82% male, 18% female.

But the people who play female seem more likely to be making characters for "looks". Which would make them more likely to post in a "show off your character!" thread.

-----

Anyway, the key to the issue for me is - the character isn't a representation of "me". It's an action figure or playing piece that I'm running around on the game board. So there are no "implications" to be raised be playing a female character (or orc, or cat, or lizard, or.....)

I'll admit the Nord with the Sword likes to hang out with female characters.

I met a big burley Nord who offered me his sword and I left him in Morthal.

Met a foxy Dark Elf who proposed we go kill some people who weren't us and I married her.

But as a guy my character is me and so the Nord with the Sword can only count to 21 when he's naked.

I've played some female characters but never really as my main.

The question you should be asking is 'why do most people in that thread choose female characters'. That thread is unlikely to be representative of the playerbase.

Why would you even want to role-play as a woman if you aren't one? :ermm:

WHY NOT?

I like the idea of making a tiny Breton female warrior able to absolutely melt face with giant two handers. Thats me though. My current character though is a enormous male khajiit dual weilding "rogue"

I guess it comes down to if you are pretending to be your character, or just commanding your character. Men who pretend to be their character sometimes have problems with men who play female characters, not understanding that its not about "being" but about commanding or watching. Dude, you are playing a girl!

If you're playing in 3rd person, you are going to be looking at the backside of your character alot, so it may as well look nice, imo.

I havent a clue. I typically try to make my character appropriately match the role Im planning for him. (Big, tough, scarred guy if hes a warrior for example)

Otherwise Ill try to make him character amusing to look at... or hideous. Gave my warrior a Bald of Awesome + Beard of Badassery.

The only time Ive made a female character in an RPG was in WoW (because I already had 4 or so males) and I had to abandon her at a low level because I got tired of the solicitations for cyber six... Despite my ardent protests that I was a big, fat hairy male. (This ofcourse was a lie because in reality I am a lanky, little dude and the only bit of me that could be described as hairy... beyond my scalp would be my shins)

I almost always start with a female character because they are more fun to look at. I don't want to go into third person and see a male ass, when I can see a female one. ;)

With Skyrim I started with a male high elf, because beards, but pure mageplay svcks in this game for me, so I switched to a female bosmer ranger (mostly because male bosmer just look like [censored]). Otherwise the gender of my char depends on the race, female chars where males look crappy, males where females look crappy.

@MisterChris

Hm, in my pen and paper group I play nearly as many female as male chars. Doesn't make a big difference regarding roleplaying for me.

Uh, the whole point of role-playing is to role-play as someone other than yourself.

Misogynist pig. :swear:

I'm a female that plays male characters most of the time. I haven't made a female toon in any of the Elder Scrolls actually. I play a female troll death knight but she has a faux-hawk...does that count?

Funny cause most "eyecandy" I see when people post pictures of their characters is pretty dull and unimaginative.

Meh, I occasionally make female characters, but it just depends on what I want to do with the character. I usually don't spend a lot of time looking at my character anyways so I don't care in that regard, it's just mostly a roleplaying thing.

Still haven't made a female in Skyrim yet though. So far I have a male Dunmer assassin, and a male Nord warrior.
