Why no Mounts?

Post » Wed Mar 10, 2010 2:49 am

In all of Fallout's primary franchise history (Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout 3), the only vehicle was in Fallout 2, and even then it still took quite a bit of work to get running. Even then, it's primary reason for being in the game was the sheer distances involved. Without the Highwayman, you were stuck looking at that Overworld Map for a lot longer between locations and/or random encounters.

With Fast Travel, what's the point of a Mount, really? If Oblivion's the meterstick we're going by, then a Mount wouldn't be able to go all the places you could go (A Steep Incline! The Horse's one weakness!), you'd be vulnerable to attacks (And in a game that features Rocket Launchers, that's never a good thing), and by the end of the game, you'd end up being faster then the mount anyway.

Mounted Travel really would add nothing to the game beyond less reason to explore between destinations. And what do you do in situations like the D.C. Ruins where a mount/vehicle literally cannot go?

I love the Jetpack idea being ported over even if it was just to explore the map a bit from the sky to get an overview and it would make it easier to spot something you might have missed.
I wouldn't mind it either to see a brahmin to act as a pack mule, used the pack horse a lot in Oblivion.

Triple post-bow

The problem with jetpacks is annoying... FO3 has an abundance of buildings with no roofs (because its not visible from the ground), and its possible to jump area boundaries. We don't know yet about FO:NV.

I wouldn't mind a limited-use jetpack in FO:NV.

I was wondering the same, why no mounts? My hubster's point of view is that since cars can be blown up with hecka force you wouldn't want to be in one when someone starts shooting at you.

Why no bicycles? Why no wind powered carts? Why no Brahmin wagons? (Fallout 1 had the trunk & back axles of cars converted to wagons ~FO2 had a functional car if you fixed it).

My guess is limited AI. (Limited AI is also why there are no usable ladders in FO3.)

Game engine can't support it.

This. Plus I just like exploring on foot with a vehicle or mode of transportation I might miss interesting distractions.

I'd really rather not have mounts/vehicals for this one. Maybe if they change the style a little but i think when you are on foot you pay attention to a lot more things in the enviroment that you would miss flying through on a horse or vehical. Plus i think the area is too small to really make use of it. Fallout 4 maybe, but make them rare and costly and the map would need to be twice in size IMO.

Hehe, yeah I know.
Don't know what went wrong but the forum wouldn't load for me anymore.

I could live with a limited-use jetpack.
Not interested in flying to high anyway as I would use it to explore the environment I'm close to and just to check if I there's a spot I haven't went to yet.

Oh good. I thought I was the only one. :whistling:

And I guess I could see some sort of mount as well if it required you maintain it, but with this engine and how it handles traveling large distances at high speeds, it's basically impossible.

Gamebryo is the reason why I don't use the Akatosh Mount in Oblivion. Every time I flew with that thing, it stuttered like crazy and crashed about 2 minutes later. :shakehead:

This is common late at night in the States (around 1-3 AM); but expect it to get worse every day until after the buzz wears off from the release.

I found a mod on Nexus that made those weird looking motorcycles around the Wasteland ridable. However I don't think it would useful to anything other than making machinima or just screwing around. As for the horses in Oblivion, they were pretty much useless. They controlled like [censored] and you could easily get your athletics up to where you could as fast if not faster than them. I don't think the engine could compensate for any decent kind of vehicle system. But I do think it would be neat, however glitchy it may be.

I typically use my jetpack to either A: Bug the hell out, B: Put all that useless flamer fuel to good use or C: Bypass a lot of doors when getting to my Tenpenny suite.

Those are good reasons as well to get one modded in :icecream:

Mounts would take away the best thing about Fallout which is to soak up the atmosphere and explore the environment.

Mounts are ridculously hard to do and require more effort than an entire combat system. For example, Oblivion's horses were not well implemented and often, I just walk everywhere. Red Dead Redemption and Assassin's Creed II are probably the only two games I know of which actually creates believable and useable horses.

heh. It doesn't use any Bethesda assets, it's all 100% fan made, so I'm fairly sure it won't take long at all to port to NV. It will be waiting on FOSE.

As much as I love to ride horses in Red Dead Redemption and Oblivion, I don't think they'd fit with Fallout 3. There are already people complaining about how NV is more of a western/mob game than a post apocolyptic one, so if they let you ride a mount (horse or otherwise), they'd have a screaming, frothing fit about it.

It's better to travel on foot in the Fallout games. :D

It will ruin the game, its not Fallout.

Yes, it will ruin the game.
But i hate people who say,"It's not Fallout" too much... :sadvaultboy:
Don't you forget the Highwayman? The car in Fallout 2 that was drivable? Is it not Fallout?

Whiners gonna Whine.

Seriously those people are best ignored. By all of us. Even Obsidian. If it isn't one thing they'll just whine about something else.
