Why so much arguing over graphics?

Post » Mon Dec 06, 2010 4:11 am

I am a console gamer (xbox 360) an I realize every game will look better on Pc it's a fact of gaming. I can't watch one crysis 2 vid without some fanboy arguing with another fanboy about graphics or what have you. I don't understand why some people think graphics are the only reason to buy a game. I want good gameplay graphics don't really matter to me. Share your thoughts on why people argue over graphics if you like. Also my comp can't even handle crysis 1.

To be honest, today, graphics don't play too much of a role in games. There is this sort of "standard" that says that, below this line, graphics are terrible and above it, it's good or great.

Source engine sits right on that line. L4D doesn't have overly great graphics, but it's OK. It doesn't distract game-play in a negative way. If it was a bit worse, then it probably would. At least for me.

CryEngine 3 is, hands down, the best game engine there is at this point in time. Period. There is absolutely no other engine that compares to the specs of CE3. There just isn't. I can see a lot of games being developed on the CE3. It's perfect in every way that matters. Perfection isn't easy to come by, let me say, also. The guys at Crytek have done a brilliant job on that.

But then, people don't expect anything less than perfect from Crytek in the first place. And that's why you're seeing arguments from narrow-minded people like that. It's called the internet. Any idiot can just post some crap somewhere. My suggestion? Ignore them, because they don't matter. At all.

That would be all.

Thanks

To be honest i'd think that the main grievance comes from a 'cut down multiplayers and changing crysis into 'cod: new york with nanosuit''.

I don't really mind that much, and crysis 2 will still look better on PC than any other game ever made ever. Consoles will get respective games that will (xbox 360) and may (ps3) be their prettiest games too. But anyone expecting crysis 2 on xbox to look as good as the pc is delusional :) (but y'know, fanboys will be fanboys).

i'd put story at number 1 for a first person shooter, as gameplay is effectively the same as doom back in 1993. You shoot stuff.

1. Atmosphere & immersion
2. Gameplay
3. Story

Bleh, my #1 is too broad. It encompasses graphics, sound, level design and other bits.

Oh yeah, and Doom is quite different from Crysis 2. You may still shoot stuff, but there's the literally tens of thousands of other differences.

Because Crysis 2 is the predecessor for the best looking game of all time.
It would be strange not to talk about the grfx of this game.
But its obviously stupid to say the console version looks more blurred, pixaleted etc. compared to C1 or the Pc version of Crysis 2. But i think it would be okay to compare the gameplay and style of C2 and C1.

1 : Story and Character development.
2 : Gameplay and Multiplayer.
3 : Graphics.

Crysis 2 for me, it's not the game with best awesome graphics, it's just the best awesome game !

crysis is know for graphics
that simple
thats why its like the most pirated game ever
so all those ppl who have 5k+ rigs and just do benchs and dont play the games
they need the trailers with real pc footage to make em go yea gona buy that to stress test my gear
yet crytek is like f u guys its all about the story no pc footage for you
think they gona lose sales unless it comes out soon

'All those people' are about 2,000 players you know :)

Also, i refuse to believe it was the most pirated game ever, based on circumstances i could believe a total of 1m downloads, at a push. But 1.5m sales for a game as demanding as crysis seems pretty par for the course in 2007, and since then it's probably sold around 3m due to the awesome that is steam.

If you don't understand why then you have no idea what this game is about. Its about GRAPHICS and action, explosions and guns, all of which are built by a company that praises themselves on GRAPHICS. See, you're a console gamer and I wouldn't expect you to understand the meaning of immersion because you can't get immersed in a console game but that possibility is true to PC.

Why are we arguing over graphics? Because all us PC users have seen 360 footage and not PC footage and the fact that this game is coming to your precious console scares us because we remember how awesome and beautiful Crysis was and we don't want some dummied down crapfest old news console game on our gaming rigs.

Exactly! I bought Crysis, Crysis Maximum Edition and the limited edition just for kicks not to mention Crysis on Steam just so I'd have it at all times. I'm sure plenty of fans did the same.

i read somewhere like a year or 2 ago that crysis was pirated over 2million copies

But how many of those then went and bought the game?

Remember, Pirated copies does not equal lost profit. Most pirate a game as a form an extended demo and either purchase the game or remove it from their HDD after a week. Also, there is the thought that if pirating did not exist, how many of those people would actually purchase the game now? My guess is that only a small percentage would.

Such statements are subject to huge errors. The way they figure out these 'numbers' is by looking at downloads across all torrent sites. Unfortunately (or fortunately from the developer point of view) each site usually lists the same 4-5 trackers. Therefore any actual number reached at the survey's end is actually needs that value divided by the number of sites sampled to reach the true downloads.

Which is why we got the fantastically pants-on-head-retarded value of black ops having 4.4 million downloads via torrents. Which is of course false, especially since multiplayer is impossible with a pirated version, why would 4.4m players download cod for the campaign and single player zombies? It is, of course, madness :)

Plus again, a large number will have bought the game since :)

I'll admit I had a pirated copy of Crysis but with pirated software comes problems. You can't update them with patches and support is lost. After a week when I knew I could run that game I uninstalled it and bought Crysis. I didn't know if my rig could run it (it could...barely) and I couldn't download the demo because I had just moved and didn't have internet at the time. Now as I said above I'm such a big fan I bought all the editions and I contributed to Crytek and EA. I just needed confirmation that my rig could run it.

Oh and I got the game from a friend who pirated it and did the exact same thing I did, he let me use the disc and we both went out and got the real thing because the first patch literally buffed the game 15% in performance.

That's kinda good to hear, but you should be hyped by now for Crysis 2. And this thread is not about piracy in games, there was another thread about that made. It's been long forgotten but not by me.

The arguing is because of hardware differences.

Black angel, your "Signature" confuses me, perhaps you could put a line on it so that people will see it easier?

The topic suddenly changed three posts ago to piracy onto Crysis 1.

And My signature does need some minor details.

Theres no argument here but I hate when people always say all I care about is gameplay. Its the most retarded statement ever in this day and age graphics and gameplay go hand and hand. Would you buy a newly made 60 dollar game if the game play was outstanding but the graphics was awful and look like something from the old nes. I know I wouldnt.

What I look for in a game is I expect both out of a modern game. Gameplay and graphics. Its not 15 years ago when games where 8 bits and gameplay only matterd.
true award winning games of there time too all considered to have ground breaking graphics with outstanding gameplay.
