Well I'm not sure how often they are or aren't played but it might be due to the fact people have the Lord of the Rings perspective of Orcs in mind

They were included for no reason other than for the sole purpose of including more races. They were once semi-sentient monsters, cousins of common goblins. Due to their sudden inclusion as a prominent race of Tamriel, they have vague and half-hearted lore behind their conception. They don't have a province of their own, they merely inhabit those of other races. For these reasons, they simply don't fit into Tamriel as well as other races.

And they're ugly.

I tend to play wizuds, that's likely most of it.
I just like having more intelligent, refined feeling characters which orcs just can't seem to do, y'know?

I do definitely like the TES orcs more than general fantasy orcs, though. :D

I like the Orsimer. In fact, my Neravarine was of the Pariah Folk.

Not all Orcs are dumb, it's just the memorable ones like Lord Rugdumph gro-Shurgak and Bugrol gro-Bagul.

I like their backstory, and I like their struggles to create a Orc-controlled region of their own (and I'm rooting for them!) but I just don't actually like to play as one. There are just more advantages to playing as other races, imo.

I liked Orcs in Morrowind, but in Oblivion they lost their luster for me. I'm not sure why really...

Most people think they're ugly.

Now, I totally get it if Bethesda's trying to say that even the ugliest, most unpopular among us can become legendary heroes, but I think the only reason they're there is because Bethesda could say "Hey! We're paying homage to Tolkien! But wait, there's a twist! These Orcs aren't evil!!"

It just feels...forced. The Altmers and Bosmers at least have a decent, lore-related reason for being in Tamriel in the first place. The Orcs makes me feel as if I'm playing a general run-of-the-mill fantasy game.

Now, if they made an Orc-like race, but gave it a different name (like they did with the Altmers and Bosmers), I'd be more willingly to play as one.

By default, I never play as a Mer or any kind of elf race in any other game. With that said, I don't mind seeing or talking to Orsimers as NPC, same as all other Mer. I find their lore quite interesting from their origin (they are literally crap from a Daedric Prince) to the point I literally see those race becoming from an enclave to an unrecognized Province using Megatron at their disposal.

I love my orc warlock it was difficult at first but I find it a fun race to mess with. Maybe since they started their TES appearance as a enemy in Arena I am not sure.

As with two out of the three Merical races (yah, I said "Merical"), I don't particularly like Orsimer; but, they have a cooler back story and less annoying members than the High and Wood tribes, so yah, Orcs are alright by me.

I wouldn't play as one, but other than that, they are alright.

i dont understnd why orcs are unpopular either. Theyre on of my favorite races (those being the dunmer, nords and orcs). Orcs are pretty much nords, but uglier (but thats no reason to hate them). plus, they have the berserk ability. they are a great combat race!

...Like Orsimer, perhaps?

I do like their origin myth, though.

I play them the most actually. And Orcish armor is some of the best looking armor in the game.

I love my massive orc warlord in either his orcish or madness armor and his huge 2 handed sword.

Way to buy into racist imperial, breton, and redguard propaganda.

They're the only mer I take exception in playing, and that means a ton. Though...I just happen to like playing argonians and nords more.

well after Bosmer they and Bretons are my favourite characters to play
Orcs are just the usual fantasy race to hate so maybe some players are carrying over prejudices from LotR or D&D
