Why must "humor" in modern video games always be cra

Post » Sun Sep 13, 2015 9:11 am

It kind of always has been the norm. In almost everything.

Yeah but Saints Row and Mortal Combat are made and advertised to be that way. Foul humor and extreme gore are the selling points for both of those franchises. And judging from their popularity I would guess the formula is effective.

Well, there's always the classics...

pong was always a hoot.

Also, 'Capsized', 'Intrusion 2', 'Torchlight II', 'Bastion' and 'Space Pirates and Zombies' (there aren't really zombies in the game) are great games with content that's good clean fun.

So humor from hit tv shows such as Fraiser and Big Bang Theory might be more suitable in videogames?

I'm still trying to get the specifics straight. This isn't a flame or criticism. Those games are so far apart I have no idea what you're looking for.

Child abuse is okay, cause that's in Skyrim. Along with cold-blooded murder, since it doesn't have a lot of gore. Forcing someone into doing what you want, medical experiments, torture, espionage, and murder are all okay since there isn't a lot of gore. Guild Wars seems to be mostly pvp, based on player guilds. Since it is a mmo, all of the trash talk and less than mature humor is actually okay because there isn't really a way to limit that. Might and Magic has way too much going on with some being turn based, some restricting the character choices, and the story that switches between fantasy and science fiction.

Also, on the topic of humour, Sorcerer King, the latest game by Stardock, has it in spades and none of it is crass or mature. It's just good old fashioned fun.

I think you should change the title to "Why must modern video games be not made for me" :P

Personally I enjoy crass humor, but if you are looking for an open world fantasy game without it, you might try Fallen Enchantress Legendary Heroes. It's a world building game with initiative based (like turn based) combat. Very strategic, somewhat like the Civilization series but in a fantasy setting with magic and monsters. It's not overly violent nor is there any nudity or foul language but it is a lot of fun. You can pick from ten races and customize your sovereign if you want. Starting with one city, you build it up, settle the wilderness, fight monsters, make treaties and alliances with other sovereigns (or go to war with them), find places to start new cities, and eventually win the game through one of four methods. 1. Conquer all remaining sovereigns; 2. Learn how to cast an ancient and powerful spell that seizes control of all magic in the land making you the undisputed ruler of the land; 3. Complete the very powerful and difficult main quest; or 4. Form an alliance with all remaining sovereigns.

Have you tried indie games? Something on the lines of minecraft, terraria, journey, or bastion? I'm listing these older, more famous, titles because there's no way they could have escaped your attention.

Sorcerer King, which I listed above, is its spiritual sequel, also by Stardock, and it focuses much more on the humour angle, at least where the quests are concerned. No crassness or dirtiness though, OP, heaven forbid!

-> Yes. I already have Minecraft and Bastion.

-------------------

@Talaran (post #31):

No offense meant but some parts of that post make no sense at all.

You're saying "all sorts of crap are OK because there's no gore"? How does that even logically follow?

"Guild Wars seems to be mostly pvp, based on player guilds. Since it is a mmo, all of the trash talk and mature humor is actually okay because there isn't really a way to limit that."
-> Guild Wars isn't just about PvP, there's plenty of PvE. Furthermore, it's the skill system that I liked. What was unique about the original Guild Wars was: Few "raid boss" mechanics, enemies used (and were countered by) the same skills and mechanics that players could use. Then they started turning it into a WoW clone with Eye of the North, people complained, and they decided to toss the entire thing out the window in favor of Guild Wars 2 (which completely svcked, biggest waste of $60)
->Also, online trash talk and inappropriate references aren't part of the game - even the ESRB specifically has a disclaimer about "Online Interactions Not Rated" on every online game they review. Additionally, inappropriate/trash talk is against the rules of most online games - people caught doing it risk getting muted or even suspended.

"Might and Magic has way too much going on with some being turn based, some restricting the character choices, and the story that switches between fantasy and science fiction."
No it doesn't have "way too much going on". It features optional turn-based or real-time combat, a wide choice of character classes, and one of the best storylines in its genre even compared to modern standards.

Looks like you generally misunderstood specification #1. The specification is about game design/balancing and has nothing to do with actual content.
-------------------

@Stormrider:
"Games Industry, why aren't games specifically catered to me? Me? Meeeeeee?!"
-> Let me fix that for you: "Games Industry, why can't you make even one perfect game after all these years? Why must you always take a crap on an otherwise good game with some form of objectionable content?"
I never demanded that the entire industry serve me unquestioningly. All I asked for is just one perfect game made to my standards and even that's a tall order.

I think VtM:B would have been perfect if it wasn′t for the middle part with the gross house and the sewers. All games must have flaws, it seems :P

Except the original Deus Ex, of course :twirl:

I didn't mind that so much, but the latter part became a bit too killy for me: I found it just a bit of a grind so I ended up in god-mode just so I could see how the story finished without too much pain being involved.

Well, I posted about stuff I remembered from the games you listed.

That seemed to be one of the overriding issues you had; that the games didn't have what you considered excessive gore. The content you didn't seem to be concerned about. "The specification is about game design/balancing and has nothing to do with actual content". Then you posted

So what do you consider objectionable or obscene content? I listed some of the content I remembered from Skyrim, Mass Effect 2, and the later M&M games that you apparently had no problems with. If it isn't about the content, why do you keep referring to the content?

I'm not a fan of gore myself, but most of the games I've ever played that have "blood" also come with the option to turn it off, unless you also find just the act of violence offensive. (Like, I don't enjoy the Assassin's Creed series when brains go spewing out of a victim, but with the blood turned off, I have no problem stabbing someone in the face. Weird? Maybe, but whatever. We all have our limits.)

I don't know what you have or haven't played, or what you considered "crass" and "inappropriate" (And NOTHING will check off ALL your demands)... but here are my suggestions:

"Open World":
Dragon Age (You weren't offended by the sixual overtones in ME apparently.)
Baldur's Gate

Gothic (No AI party though.)

Mount and Blade (Again, no party. Also more sandbox than open world, but whatever.)

More "Linear" gameplay, but still enoyable in my book:
Assassin's Creed (without gore)
Half-Life

From what I've heard from my cousin, EVE meets all but your "no MMO" rule when it comes to space combat.

Honestly, wanting to play fighting games and expecting them to be "classy" is kind of silly. I know I don't enjoy over the top gore and violence, so I lean more towards RPGs and adventure games (I take offense to your "point and click isn't a game" comment  ). Like it was said elsewhere, we all have our dream idea for a game, but you have to be realistic.

Perfection is not obtainable. Ever hear the expression "You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time."

Personally, I love the many many choices that the game landscape gives me these days. I love silly and vulgar humor sometimes, I love pop references sometimes, I love emotional moments in games - sometimes. Sometimes I just love to hack and slash my way around being a bad ass. And sometimes, I like picking up a game gun and shooting stuff. The onus is not on the game industry, really, to achieve your definition of perfection - in my opinion. There are so many different types of games, the onus should be on you to find things you like - whether its retreads of games you prefer, replaying games or broadening your horizons and branching out into different types of games.

I adore single player RPGs... that's my favorite thing, the games I play the most. But recently I found myself kind of wandering aimlessly from game to game, not ready yet to replay Witcher 3 (Yay for gore and crass humor as well as subtle moments and damned fine quest writing.) I have ended up playing, of all things, Crusader Kings II. It's awesome, it's really hard to learn, it's sometimes confusing, sometimes bizarrely hilarious, lots of actual history. So not my usual thing.

My point it, if you want to find something that pleases YOU, then YOU need to make the effort. Honestly, with gaming as with MANY things in life, its the journey. Try different games - don't like 'em, stop playing them and move on. The gaming landscape is so wide and varied. Maybe you'll find something you like... look on GOG, look on Humble Bundles and other places and keep looking.

Or maybe, as funnybunny said early on, maybe its time to find something else that interests you, if gaming isn't fun for you.

my 2cents.

People have already pointed out that perfection is both unattainable and highly subjective. And since perfection is highly subjective and you demand a perfect game, well then you're demanding that the game industry cater exactly to you and you alone. You literally say, "All I asked for is just one perfect game made to my standards". That is literally asking for the industry to make a game especially for you.

And asking for the mods to sweep "trolling" content is very lame. You're being called out on your entitled and querulous behaviour. Sometimes in a sarcastic manner, but nobody is trolling you.

That, uh, expression is actually about fooling people

But... but... Barbie's unrealistic body proportions! Body shaming! Patriarchy!

Anyway, OP, it seems you're just utterly impossible to please. People are giving good suggestions for games and you either ignore them, or shoot them all down based on some contrived or overblown detail. Like funnybunny has told you multiple times, you're just bored with gaming. Move on. Do something else with your life. This is not the first time you've made a thread like these, and every time people tell you to go outside, and every time you come back and make another thread full of complaints in which you ignore all reasonable advice. I'm thinking you actually enjoy complaining.
