Why is Oblivion crashing so damn much?

This is the sole reason that pushes me to play Skyrim instead of Oblivion: crashing for no obvious reason. A heavily modded Oblivion is my favorite TES game, but how am I supposed to enjoy it if it crashes constantly?

I highly doubt I'm CTDing because of memory issues. Normally for me, out-of-memory crashes occur after every hour or two. That's okay; I don't mind that too much. Now, however, it seems like I'm crashing whenever I exit an interior twice-thrice. I'm also getting 100% crashes when I'm near the Imperial Prison Sewers.

My gut feeling tells me that Unique Landscapes or Better Cities is causing it. I'll disable them for now and come back with the results, but can any of you help me?

Are you using OSR? Have you dealt with UDRs? Those are two things that fix very common possible reasons for crashes.

Also, system specs? It may not be able to handle certain things.

Yeah, I am using OSR. Correct me if I'm wrong, but UDRs are dirty edits that I have to clean out with Tes4Edit, right? No, I haven't done that now that you mention it. I'll give that a shot after work and come back with the results.

Yep. Alongside with that, I'm running a tweaked Streamline, the http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/45033/?, and OSR. I'm sure I'm running other things, but I forgot at the moment.

You've got a ton of stuff.

For example, why do you have crowded cities.esp if you've got already Better cities (That adds quite a lot of npcs)

Same can be said for crowded roads, although you have no .esp that can take care of new npcs inside roads.

You should remove reneer guard overhaul. The concept of the mod is amazing, but the author was never able to refine it - there were always issues, no matter what. There are better alternatives out there.

Remember to clean oblivion + dlcs

you should check if you need both of these:

Alright guys, it's not Unique Landscapes nor Better Cities. In fact, now I can't even leave Weynon Priory. Everytime I exit the building, I crash.

Also you can't just disable mods like better cities or unique landscapes and just remake the bashed patch.
You have to remake the lod everytime you remove one of these

I know having lots of NPCs can cause a strain on my computer, but I don't think that's the problem. To be honest, I only downloaded crowded cities and crowded roads recently (so even after I noticed the crashes). And like I said, it's not (at least I don't think) a memory problem.

Can you elaborate what you mean by, "no esp to take care of the NPCs inside roads" part?

I love Reneers Guard Overhaul, but if its as buggy as you say, then would you kindly recommend me another alternative?

I'll check if I need both of those esp's.

Edit - Okay, here's what I'll do:

1) I'll go to work.

2) After I come home, I'll clean out every dirty esp file using Tes4Edit (unless BOSS says it's not meant to be cleaned).

3) If I can get a better alternative, I'll replace Reneers Guard Overhaul.

4) I'll check if I need both the Marts Monsters Mod for OOO - Knights.esp and Oscuros-Oblivion-Overhaul - Knights of the Nine. esp.

Cross your fingers for me, guys.

The other thing I've meant is just to remove the crowded npcs - what I meant is that even is that these npcs are overkill on your configuration per-se, not because you've got another mod that adds npcs like Better-cities

I used to get crashes every hour or so. Now I don't. What I did was save a lot and whenever it crashed I would load the last save and see if I could get the crash to repeat. Once I got a repeatable crash, I deactivated all my mods and loaded te game with only oblivion.esm and SI to make sure the crash did not occur in vanilla. Then I started adding mods one by one until I found the culprit. By doing this, I tracked down two mods in my load order that seemed to be causing most of my crashes.

One if those mods was Streamline 3.1. I no longer use it. I must have been conflicting with something else in my load order because every time the game loaded a certain cell in the Kvatch Oblivion realm the game would crash. When I uninstalled Streamline the problem went away.

Crashes can also be causes by missing meshes, so if you have uninstalled a mod that shares meshes with another of your mods that could be causing crashes every time your game tries to call the missing mesh. Wrye Bash should automatically resolve this issue but only if you installed both mods through Wrye Bash. I ran into trouble recently uninstalling a mod with Wrye Bash that shared meshes with another mod I had installed through OBMM, so now I only insall with Wryr Bash.

Modding Oblivion is tricky business and it takes a bit of work to get a stable load order, but it can be done. My load order is bigger than yours, and I played six or eight hours last weekend without a single crash. I went four hours straight in one session. Knock in wood.
