Why online DRM?

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 9:30 am

Hi, why will Crysis 2 use online DRM activation?
I really would like to buy it but as I am boycotting anything with online DRM (and yes, that includes Steam as well), I have no chance on buying that game.
It did work with Crysis 1, right?
Why can't I just choose which game check I want? Battlefield BC2 uses either Steam or disc check.
Please think about implementing something like that because I really would like to buy the game but I won't, if online DRM is mandatory.

The DRM is basically:

Game needs internet when INSTALLING (only ONE check).
Game needs internet when playing ONLINE (.... makes sense).

DRM seems pretty relaxed, which is good. Its very likely you will need to keep the disc in the whole time.

I agree with your point. Besides, I doubt will need a disc to continue playing it offline and vice versa.

Yep, as doomlord stated, you just need to activate the game online once (standard procedure) and that's it :) Of course you need to be connected to the internet to play multiplayer.

Aww diddums, you mean that you having to be connected to the internet while you install is such a huge deal? Really? You seem pretty capable of connecting to it at the moment.

Although, tbh, it likely won't prevent piracy at all. Still, piracy has definitely been going down over the last few years, so maybe this stuff is working (making cracks more difficult to use for the average sponger).

That's a very true point, once and the rest is up to you. Activation, rather than a permanent connection is far better. Still agreeing to original point.

OH NO YOU NEED INTERNET FOR MULTIPLAYER.

Hopefully you don't need a disc in the drive, that'd be sweet :D

Yeah, the approach on the DRM issue by Crytek is a good solution, you only need it to install the game and to play multiplayer, which makes sense as you need an internet connection to play multiplayer.
I found Steam the perfect solution because no matter if I burn my computer, I can install everything again with no problem and with no restriction on the times I can reinstall a game, which is the bad side on crysis warhead.

Sounds like the new StarForce DRM. DCS uses this on Black Shark, and my computer has had no problems with it. As long as they give support, I see no problem. Actually, there is a way to activate offline as well, as long as you have a phone to call in and receive codes.

I honestly am a bit shocked by how much acceptance online DRM has in the community.
Well, I stand my point, I will not buy the game with online DRM. And as I stated, that includes a single online activation.
I am sure the arguments against DRM have been discussed here so I won't do that again.
Just one point: if I like a game I want to play it in 10 or 15 years. Online DRM doesn't guarantee me that, so I do not buy the game.

Thank you. :p Well, StarForce has been around for quite a while, but a lot of people used to really hate it because they said if messed up their CD Drives. But there's no weird drivers with it anymore, and doesn't harm your computer. When you buy the game, it simply asks you one time to verify your purchase by contacting a server online. Thats it. You never see it again, unless you change parts on your machine or try to reinstall. A lot better than disk checks (which Daemon Tools has cracked) . And its near impossible to crack.

StarForce FrontLine ProActive (developed in 2004, updated in 2009) [6]
Provides DRM + Protection solution for web distributed games and applications. Disc binding replaced by web activation. Doesn't utilize drivers or other low level modules.

I think this is what they're using.

Once is better than never at all, an activation. Doesn't that remind you of Ms 7? ;)

Hm, I dunno if you are referring to me, but just for information: I do buy my games.
But the number of games I bought the last years decreased significantly since DRM has been introduced.
DRM won't stop piracy, so why bother the people who want to buy the game?
The publishers always moan about bad sales figures, but why are they keeping me from buying the game, then?

It doesn't really stop piracy, but it prolongs the time it takes to crack the game. And this new StarForce DRM is loaded with anti-crack defenses from what I hear. Very hard to crack. So, probably no crack for a long time, and everyone who really wants the game ends up buying it. This, and a good demo to show people what they're getting are the way to sell a game. If the DRM is good, it might take pirates 2 years to crack the game. By then, Crytek has made all the sales it needs to. Also, for people who are biching about playing the game years later, well, the pirates will have cracked it and you can just get rid of the DRM then.

Well, I think thats what has changed. I don't think this one is going to have a CD check, because there are too many ways to crack that. Now its going to be a one time online check.
