Why do people dislike guns idea for TES?

Post » Sun Sep 25, 2011 3:01 am

Well, after roaming forums a bit, I found out that people really dislike the idea of guns in TES.
And I mean really, really dislike it.
I mean, I'm personally neutral on this one, but I don't understand such high negaticity thowards guns in TES.
If I remember corectly, Redguards have cannons, so the technology is not an issue here.
Discuss!

P.S.
I know that there are other threads about this, but I kinda wish to start this fresh.

Cause this is medieval fantasy and should stay that way, if guns are introduced then heavy armour will also probably disappear much like what happened with Fable 2.

P.S.
I was the first to vote no!

Most people probably don't want them because they don't fit in with the medieval fantasy setting.

Because die-hard TES fans are simply scared of change in the Elder Scrolls universe. They don't think time exists there, apparently. Eventually, though, sooner or later, they're going to have to come with terms of the fact that the inhabitants on Nirn aren't a bunch of morons who solely rely on magic to do everything for them. Unless gunpowder, or it's Nirn equivalent, does not exist, which I find highly improbable ESPECIALLY given the existence of "magic", then eventually people are going to figure out how a damn basic gun works. It ain't that hard...

Guns could function as a sort of spell staves, already included in Oblivion and Skyrim. I wouldn't mind finding some sort of old rusty Dwemer rifle. As long as guns won't play a prominent role in the game, I don't hate the idea.

Not that I want guns in TES but.. doesn't anyone find it strange that they have been capable of bulding masterpieces of engineering, and have alot of technology that doesn't fit the Medieval ages (as people claim TES is), and yet they have never thought about guns? I mean haven't they ever thought about what the mages do with their destruction magic? Surely gunpowder must have been introduced in Nirn somewhere..

I don't like it when fantasy games try and simulate technological progression. Just look at Fable and how it completely svcked the charm out of those games...

The Dwemer (and possibly the Reguards) are exceptions as far as i'm concerned. The rest of Tamriel should stay medieval-esque. That's why I like the series. If I wanted an RPG with guns instead of swords, i'd find one.

As others said, this is a medieval fantasy world. I would not buy Skyrim if they introduced guns. Honestly, even with mods being able to take them out, I would still not buy the game. Never played the Fable games, but I had considered trying the latest one, until I saw guns were in the game. Not worth my money. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against guns. I play plenty of shooters, but I don't want guns in my medieval fantasy games. I love ketchup on french fries, but it doesn't mean I want to put ketchup on my ice cream. Guns do not go with medieval fantasy.

It doesn't stick with these games. There are myriads of games with guns nowdays. FPSs is the most popular genre,so people who like to play games with guns have many many of them.
But games with swords and maces and axes aren't that many, they are just a few.And we who like this kind of setting and gameplay want to keep having games like that to play.

Except that guns doesn't stick well with the overall feel and nature of TES,for guns to be in the game, the game's gameplay would have to change very much. And people doesn't like these kind of changes.
If Skyrim had guns, its gameplay would have to change. It would turn in a Gears of Wars/Mass Effect 2 clone, and TES fans wouldn't like something like that. There are already games offering such an experience with guns.
Except that, its level design would have to be different and radically changed. There should be enough things around to provide enough cover, and having to think where to place cover points in such a HUGE world as Skyrim or Cyrodill would take multiple times the time.

If next TES had guns,it would take 7-8 years to be finished, and it would be a Gears of Wars clone.
We don't want something like that. We want TES games to come out sooner than that, and we want TES to be TES,and whatever else to be whatever else.

Um, cannons are not guns nor is it remotely the same technology.

Also, we already have TES with guns, it's called Fallout.

Moved this to Tes general discussion.

I've also removed a few posts. If you can't discuss this in a somewhat serious and civilised manner, then just stay away. I'm sure there are other threads that suit your needs better.

Guns go from rifles like in Fable, to eventually being a modern/futuristic world. No thanks. I can shoot in Mass Effect or Battlefield, I come to TES for straight fantasy RPG.

Chrononlogically, cannon were a good 250-300 years earlier in origin than the handheld pistol/rifle. Cannon were around in the 1300s, albeit extremely rare. It was not until about the 1600s that pistols were mastered.

Therefore the Redguards' cannons can fit in with a mostly medieval world.

As for why I don't want guns, they would be, quite simply, out of place in the TES world. As others have said, the armour-piercing qualities of guns would make armour obsolete, and guns would change the flavour of combat from largely melee to largely shooting. And it would be too much like Fallout.

No
Not that I hate the idea of guns in rpgs, but I think that TES is good and unique as it is, guns would just bring TES into the modernized fantasy trend that has been going on lately

The "charm" of Fable is subjective from person to person. Personally, I thought the clockpunk/steampunk far more exciting, unique, and "charming" than your standard medieval fantasy RPG, which has been done a million times over.

Anyway, that's not my point, I'm not attacking anyone here and I'm not disregarding your own opinion. I'm not even suggesting that modern guns, or other similar technological breakthroughs, should be in the Elder Scrolls games at this time. However, I do think it's very silly to just assume that it can NEVER exist in the world of Nirn. That's just... well, kind of stupid to put it bluntly. What, another 1000 years is going to go by without any advancement through Dwemer steamwork technology? No one, in 1000 years of magical and technological research, can figure out how to make a simple gun? A hand canon, even? That is some fairly weak line of thinking, there.

God, I hope future ES games don't follow the same path as Fable, into the 18th or early 19th century, with Muskets and no armour to speak of. I really hope this isn't a trend, as Risen 2 has crept into this era.

It would severly impede my game choices, if more RPGs followed suit and good RPGs are already thin on the ground.
