Why do people hate on High Elves?

Post » Sun Jun 24, 2012 7:43 pm

They really aren't that bad, the weaknesses are not very noticable, they have a lot of starting magicka, they have a high resist disease, you can actually make them seem normal, and these high elves at the time aren't associated with the stupid Thalmor during the time of Skyrim.

Because:

Most people now assume all Altmer are Thalmor.

They have never truly been portrayed as they should be in the games in my opinion (they should be tall, golden skinned and beautiful).

You can't make an Altmer without having a receeding hairline :(

I've never heard of this, actually. Is this some kind of Skyrim "hate thing"?

I'd say the most "hated" in Oblivion and Morrowind would be male Bosmers. There are a lot of comical or just plain strange Bosmers in these games.

I'm saying the people who play the game, not the NPCs in game.

No hate for Altmer here. My character counts the following among her many close friends: Ardaline, Ungarion, Carahil, Sinderion, Tilmo, Volanaro, Carandial. . . . :twirl:

Male Bosmers are, to a man, very strange.

My Altmer is my favorite character. He towers over everyone and his melee kill cams are brutal. His mohawk isn't receding. I do hate the Thalmor with a passion though. Hope I get a chance to wipe them out in future dlc.

Atlmer hatred? I don't see much in the Oblivion forums. But in the Skyrim forums....

Oh boy.

It's odd....female Bosmer tend to be taller, and not as comical or comedic.

Kill cams? In Oblivion? Where? :P

Probably the only reason that so many people hate on High Elves in the Skyrim forum is that people prejudge them to be assoicated with Thalmor. However, talking to some other people, they say on their most hated Oblivion race list it would be, 1. Bosmer, 2. Orisimer, and 3. Altmer.

I don't hate the Altmer, even in Skyrim. I hate Thalmor characters from a storyline point of view, as intended, but I also love the Thalmor as villians. I feel that if handled right they could be a good reccuring threat in future TES games. The united Empire with nothing to threaten it but plot devices (Jagar Tharn, Numi, Akulakhan and Ur, the lack of a Septim Emperor, and Alduin) is boring, and I never realised how much, the Dominion makes for a more tense and interesting story. Having the Dominion stay at least powerful enough to be considered a threat would be nice.

If we are going purely Oblivion and gameplay, I thought the High Elves were handled badly with looks, but no worse than any other character.

My series playthrough character (where I kept the same from Arena-to-Skyrim) was a toss up between Altmer, Bosmer and Dunmer. At the time I went with Dunmer because it made Morrowind a more personal story, but overall the Altmer have more impact on Tamriel as a whole. Especially the last two games. Mankar is an Altmer, Ocato, the King of Worms, and so forth. The Ayleids are basically Aldmer, which makes Knights of the Nine effectively about them. Then in Skyrim we have nice Altmer scattered around trying to get by, we have the Thalmor heavily outnumbering them, and all manner of interesting lore. I loved the bit about the Night of Green Fire.

No, no, i'd say the Altmer tie for my favorite race with Dunmer, and both coem from the same roots.

I don't get the Altmer hate thing. Bosmer and Orc males have been made fun of in the last several games, so it's not surprising, but for every Altmer shown in a bad light in Oblivion (Mannimarco, Mankar, Earana, etc.) there's another one who's good (Ocato, Honditar, Carahil, etc.) I think it's a Skyrim effect.

Yes, I agree with you, however it just could be people don't exactly like Altmer, with them being outshone by the Bretons in Oblivion.

Altmer are pretty pompous and arrogant for the most part.

So are Imperials, but I dont really mind it, considering my favourite race is Imperials. :P

In Oblivion there is really no Altmer "hate". That seems to occur with the Thalmor.

In Oblivion it is the male Bosmer (Wood Elves) that are annoying and get some level of "hate".

In Oblivion some Altmers tend to be devious and power-hunger (eg Mannimarco, Umbaccano, Mankar Cameron, etc). Because they feel superior. However, that is just some Altmers. There are many very nice and respectable Altmers in Oblivion.

When I first started playing Oblivion, I associated them with the Thalmor and thus hated them like I do in Skyrim. However, I found the Altmer to be a lot nicer in Oblivion, and now have no hate for them.

As a race, they're excellent for mage characters. I think it's just that they're too tall, or the height difference is too noticeable. I find it odd when an Altmer stands beside a male Bosmer ...

I love Altmer. I love how they are tall, and very noble. I guess this is what leads to their hate, they are a little too cocky, and picture them selves above all else.

In other words, they're supremacists.

My issue with Oblivion High Elves is that they're not High Elf enough. With perhaps one or two exceptions, each Altmer NPC might as well be any other race. I get that Cyrodiil is supposed to be cosmopolitan, but still.

A lot of the major bad guys in Oblivion are altmer.

Also according to lore they are child-killers, courtesy of selective breeding, and they hate the races of men because they bind them to the mortal plane.

Altmer are EPIC. Period. There magic kicks butt far more than any breton could, and there weakness's can be overlooked by INCINERATING THE ENEMY BEFORE THEY KNOW YOU EXIST. Thalmor blow, But altmer as a race are awesome.

That's what i was saying before though. Most TES fans who aren't in the know with lore may just assume that all Altmer = Thalmor.

I think Altmer are a lovely people. Sure they can be a bit haughty sometimes but they are a wise loyal and true people. I don't like the term 'hate on' but I can certainly say I have never seen that in Oblivion.

Glarthir on the other hand...

Because they're often portrayed as arrogant and stuck-up. I don't think it's anything to do with their attributes. Although the weakness to magic is quite a turn-off. :/
