I don't hate the Altmer, even in Skyrim. I hate Thalmor characters from a storyline point of view, as intended, but I also love the Thalmor as villians. I feel that if handled right they could be a good reccuring threat in future TES games. The united Empire with nothing to threaten it but plot devices (Jagar Tharn, Numi, Akulakhan and Ur, the lack of a Septim Emperor, and Alduin) is boring, and I never realised how much, the Dominion makes for a more tense and interesting story. Having the Dominion stay at least powerful enough to be considered a threat would be nice.
If we are going purely Oblivion and gameplay, I thought the High Elves were handled badly with looks, but no worse than any other character.
My series playthrough character (where I kept the same from Arena-to-Skyrim) was a toss up between Altmer, Bosmer and Dunmer. At the time I went with Dunmer because it made Morrowind a more personal story, but overall the Altmer have more impact on Tamriel as a whole. Especially the last two games. Mankar is an Altmer, Ocato, the King of Worms, and so forth. The Ayleids are basically Aldmer, which makes Knights of the Nine effectively about them. Then in Skyrim we have nice Altmer scattered around trying to get by, we have the Thalmor heavily outnumbering them, and all manner of interesting lore. I loved the bit about the Night of Green Fire.
No, no, i'd say the Altmer tie for my favorite race with Dunmer, and both coem from the same roots.
