Why do people say Oblivion was so bad?

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 9:34 pm

Oblivion was my favourite game of all time. I played Morrowind back in 2004, way before Oblivion, and just didn't like it.

However, once you play Skyrim, it makes Oblivion seem...limited. Just, everything in Skyrim seems hand crafted (which is is), while a lot of Oblivion was using a "Generate Region Here" button. The dungeons still use lego kits, but the variation in each one is so much that thy all look unique, along with their own little stories. NPCs have their own personalities, better voices. The visuals are stunning, the variety in landscapes are superb, and level scaling actually works. Everything just comes together nicely.

I think the problem was that Oblivion was far too limited to the technology of the time (not so much the hardware, but the engine). It's still a great game for me, but playing Skyrim really highlights its flaws.

Well, though Beth stated they made a different engine for Skyrim (making the graphics engine for a game from scratch is the hardest and longest part of the development), I just see that they updated it a lot from Oblivion's engine. Skyrim still has the same command console and even graphics from Oblivion are used in Skyrim (note the sky, it is near exactly the same). Even the moon and small moon are simple re-textures of Oblivion's and they wax/wane and move the same way. Not that it is a problem, because it is Tamriel and it should look the same. Considering Fallout 3 came out 3 years ago and Vegas came out last year, both using the same engine as Oblivion's, I think it is just an update. It still looks really nice though, Beth did well on the looks of Skyrim.

Well, actually the moons each have their own orbit now, instead of being locked together like in Obivion and Morrowind.
Also, Masser is a retextured photograph of Mars.
Of course it looks the same :)

Primitive graphics? Bah! I still get immersed playing the original Bladur's Gate, and that thing used sprite animations.

This^, so much! I couldn't agree more. BG is my favorite Bioware RPG, though Origins is right there. My personal favorite of all time is Planescape: Torment. Even though it lacks custom characters, gender choice, the player agency in that game is near unsurpassed to this day. I finished playing it again just a few months ago, it is still as great as it was when it came out 12 years ago.

Bad gfx, awful animation, horrible and beyond stupid autolevelling, autogenerated landscapes, bad dialogues, 1.5 voice actors, feeling that you playing the game made for 10 yo., I can go on forever. Oh, and "I've seen a mudcrab recently...". Skyrim is even better than Morrowind.

Beware man, they'll tell you that it's just rose glasses and that no, Torment is in fact much worse than Oblivion, because it's not possible to prefer a previous game to a newer one unless you're biased by nostalgia !

(and yes, Torment is the best game ever !)

Just because a better sequel comes out doesn't make the previous game ''svck''. End of story.

I've found you mostly get two groups of people: those who dislike it for genuine reasons (e.g. they don't like the level scaling, bugs etc) and those who never forgave Bethesda for releasing TES IV instead of Morrowind II. The former group either fixed the problems where possible, or happily used those fixes once provided and got on with enjoying the game; the latter simply complained very vocally and continue to do so to this day. Which is a bit odd, really. Then there are those whose genuine opinion is unclear but who join in with the shouting because it's "big and clever".

Okay, I admit that there are still people with genuine grievances, but from what I've seen, they're outnumbered by those who think it makes them look cool.

Here are some reasons I thought Oblivion was kind of bad:

1. Literally everything scaled with you. When you got to level 40 or so bandits were running around wearing daedric armor.
2. All the dungeons looked the same.
3. Most of the towns looked eerily similar as well.
4. The land was mostly the same.
5. It did not fit in with lore well.

This is most of my opinion, too. The Level Design was my biggest issue. Didn't like that they just copied Morrowind's design in Shivering Isles, either. I mean, Skyrims design was fine and it lacks elven influence. Also the whole hand holding thing *shudder*.

Of course, whenever I post that I don't like Something of Oblivion/I like something of Morrowind, I frequently come under attack and called a "flaming Oblivion bashing Morrowind fan boy troll" or something. Just looking the comments, I can see the same thing. (It's actually why I left te community for a while)

I'm not sure where Skyrim is. After it's accumulated some nostalgia, it may be to the same level, if not better than Morrowind, imo. 3/5>2>1>4 imo.

And obviously my differing opinions are invalid because it's not pro-Oblivion.

I think it's just popular to hate on Oblivion. It was GoTY, for years and years it sat on shelves for near full price, and it sold six million copies. I personally liked it a lot, and it is one of the few I actually played long enough to unlock all the achievements. It had a really good story, and that masked the copy pasta for the most part. Skyrim is terrific as well, but all this crying about Oblivion is just a gross exaggeration.

Haha had a massive urge to troll...

Anyway to me, Morrowind felt more like going into another world, wheras Oblivion felt like playing a detailed game... I dunno..

Out of the 3 games I'd say Skyrim is the best and Oblivion is the worst, mainly because the Oblivion gates get really repetitive and boring after awhile. I really hate opening and closing gates grr. Morrowind is amazing as well especially with the ability to fly, which lends a whole new aspect to the game itself

See, here's the thing. How do you get immersed in a game with primitive graphics?

I don't know, ask anyone who still drools over Diablo (myself included). Or hundreds of other games. If the gameplay is great, character development works well, and the whole thing is just plain FUN and pulls you in, there's nothing outdated about that. If you think Oblivion is primitive, you must be young. :-)

Another very bad feature of oblivion was the levelling system.
In order to have any chance of survival at high level, you had to make sure you leveled up a bunch of side skills before you levelled.
Which meant grinding. Not that I mind grinding so much, but it wasn;t obvious when you first sat down the trap for not grinding side skills.
