Why do people seem to think skyrim will look bad on p.c?

Post » Sun Nov 07, 2010 4:15 am

The same reason people would complain if Oblivion on 360 had looked like Morrowind. The graphics bar is set so far ahead of consoles on PC that its practically a generational leap. Something that looks good in the perspective of a console game looks like a 2005 game to PC users.
Do I think Skyrim will look bad on PC? I dont know. I havent seen the PC version. If it uses DX11, with tessellation, compute shader, has some 2011 level shader effects then it will look just fine and probably incredible. But if its some DX9 port then no it wont. I have faith in Bethesda though.

thats bs uncharted 2 and god of war 3 look just as good as the best pc games....

Almost every game is designed for consoles these days, so what. They still look great on pc though. No worries.

Actually the PC has the highest game release count every single year and the highest number of exclusive titles every single year.

Oooooooh! If only every game company followed GSC or CD Projekt's mentality and developed games primarily for PC to be later ported to consoles...

Then the world of games would be a much better place.

You really have to love the guys at CD Projekt. They really do care about their fans. Take The Witcher: Enhanced Edition and the creation of GoG.com as great examples.

GSC only cares for their Russian fanbase, but I'm pretty sure the Russians know what makes a good S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game.

Those games do look good but thats simply not true at all. They are very far from it. Not to mention running at 720p. They arent pushing half the effects a modern high end PC game is, even with God Of Wars MLAA aliasing was still apparent, even more so in Uncharted. Those games generally have more confined levels with areas and characters clearly poly starved. GOW didnt even have a physics engine! Neither of those examples push any thing slightly complex in fluid simulation or physics, which I know of a few PC games that certainly do. All of this while running in 720p. No most PC games maxed show a noticably higher IQ compared to either of these games. Neither come close to doing what crysis or JC2 does in the back ground while looking even close to the visuals of those games.
Now these games do look great, by console standards. I just played through GOW3 actually and probably my GOTY of 2010. And we are talking about a large open world game with a ridiculous amount of back ground task.

People seem to forget Crysis came out in 2007...four years ago.

Now yes it was an FPS but the maps were quite large and in sandbox there were impressive. Not to mention a huge majority of computer tasking was physics and other background calculations. You think four years in the future we would get some were but hey.

Hey guys, you know I absolutely love Oblivion and stuff, but if Skyrim's graphics aren't at least 10x as good then it's not worth buying!

Whatever happened to the (somewhat illogical) 'Oblivion was all about the graphics, more attention should be given to gameplay' argument?

We have dynamic shadows and good looking NPCs. If the animations are good too, there's no good reason to complain.

If I were to choose graphics awesomeness versus better story I choose the story. I mean Oblivion was pretty advanced in graphics already (and physics), now I'd rather they focus on deeper story and quests. Graphics is my last concern.

I haven't seen much from The Witcher 2, but aren't its levels mostly separated map squares, with a fairly lineair path on the levels a la Dragon Age, and not one continuous world where there are actually things happening beyond 10 meters in front of you?

According to http://www.faceoffgames.com/section/1164240 The Witcher 2 features a fully open world.

24GB corsair ram

Believe what you will - but if you ever start having issues, start looking here. Corsair ram is made from the same atomic substance that internet toolbars are made from - Ruinmyfun-ium.

@ Spark_212
Yup, but I don't think it will be as open as TES.

For me it's like this: gameplay > story >>> graphics.

As long as they aren't ugly I'm fine with it. Crysis looks amazing but it bored me and I didn't finish it :P

With a new engine and Bethesda having said they hired new animators/modellers specifically to get out of the "hit with an uglyfish stick" ghetto, I'm expecting they can focus on gameplay and the game can't help but look good.

Getting out of boring, mediocre, middle-of-the-road in everything land will help too. God was the environment in Oblivion bland.

edit: also, so far no duck-footed elves that I can see either, so that's a blessing.
