Why is Power Armor so "Required"

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 9:01 am

It seems like ever time I turn around, someone wants me to be using PA. Be it at the Glowing Sea or in some questlines.

I don't like PA. I don't want to use PA. Yes, I realize it's useful and good protection, but I just don't want to use it.

The Brotherhood practically insists you use it. Even the Institute is really in to it.

Admittedly, it's not as big a thing with the Railroad or the MInutemen, but, still, everybody seems to think it's the only way to go.

I don't like it and I don't want to use it.

I realize, in irradiated conditions, you can use a Hazmat suit, but there is no protection there.

Oh well. Clunky tank seems to be the way F4 wants you to go. What can you do.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Nope. Only time I use it is for expeditions into the glowing sea. Never felt forced.

well, think of it from a common sense standpoint. You have the ability to use a walking, tank, something more powerful than what most of the inhabitants of the wastelends can use, that offers protection from pretty much anything, why would you NOT use it if you could.

I don't even use it in the Glowing Sea. I have a decent stock of rad-x and rad-away and I just use that.

They say that PA is the best, but also point out that buying up all the Rad-X and Radaway is an option for the Glowing Sea as well.

The Brotherhood of Steel is all over Power Armor. Always have been. It's their signature piece of gear. Of COURSE they insist on you wearing a suit of PA. It's like complaining the Air Force insists on you using the F-14 they assigned to you for missions instead of a hot air balloon.

I ditched mine at Sanctuary after escorting them there.

I did go back for it at one point for a particularly hard battle but parked it back at Sanctuary as soon as it was over. (I kinda regretted it actually.)

Aside from the glowing sea, my power armor is now largely for display purposes (all fives types now, plus an extra T-60 in its special paint job and a partial second X-01).

I've only used it in the very first quest when you get your first set, and again in the glowing sea.

Aside from that, I collect them, but don't use them.

At certain times I really do feel like I'm required to use the power armor more so if I'm going against super mutants, certain legendary enemies, or even if I'm just exploring because there will be those mines that I never seem to be able to catch that blow me up. I don't really like having to depend on it and I'm trying to ween myself off of it but it really gets annoying when you keep getting one-shotted by bullet sponges.

Hazmat suit > PA. Never touched PA since Concord.

I'm kinda surprised at how little I end up using Power Armor now.

In the other games, it was an almost mandatory upgrade to whatever your regular armor was. Unless you were playing a pure stealth character. But this version of the armor feels a lot more optional.

Oddly, I tend to avoid using it not because of the fusion cores (I got a ton of the things) but because of the UI and the repair issue. The armor gets torn apart in missions, and there's no way to repair it on the run, and the UI is pretty rough compared to the main UI. So I use it for big missions when I know I'm heading against overwhelming odds.

I'm absolutely being pedantic and annoying, and I apologize...but I can't help but point out that the F-14 was a carrier-based Navy plane, not an Air Force plane.

I'll...just go now...

You don't even need it for the glowing sea. I went through that with just some Rad-X and Radaway. I used maybe 6 Rad-X at best?

Wait, what? I've almost never run into anyone who's really that into power armor outside of the Brotherhood of Steel, who basically live by it. The doctor just suggested it for the glowing sea because it's a radiation-filled hellhole with all gods only know WHAT kind of ridiculous monsters (Spoiler: They're the kind of badass that tends to make people wish they were wearing the suit). Followed by the "metric [censored]ton of RadAway/Rad-X" alternative. Still, to the average wastelander, when people think 'protection from radiation AND monsters', they think power armor, because that's the point of it.

The Institute? They're obsessed with science and pre-War technology. Power armor is just about the fanciest bit of pre-war tech you can personally haul around unless you count, I don't know, Curie? No-brainer.

Railroad and Minutemen legit don't care. They don't even suggest it for the Castle quest, which is one of the few places where it's STRONGLY recommended that you bring a suit.

Can't see how it's so required outside of Concord. I parked it at Red Rocket after that and didn't use until I had to enter the Glowing Sea. I have more fun sneaking around and popping heads off. :gun: :fallout:

I've used it once so far, outside of the introductory quest. To fight a bunch of Gamma Gun wielding Children of the Atom. But now that I have a hazmat suit....

(haven't been to the glowing sea yet. Nor have I hung out with the BoS beyond that first distress-call mission.)

I only use it in the glowing sea, or if I come across a location I find to difficult to defeat I'll go back with Power Armor then destroy them all. Other then that I just collect them when I come across them, i must have a dozen partially built Power Armor suits waiting for armor between my two characters. I get to distracted to complete them. But I do have about 8 or so custom complete sets, they just look cool set up in a collectiom

Outside of the Concord mission I've only gotten in it to move it around from Sanctuary to my new floating fortress above the drive in. Hazmat suit did me just fine in the glowing sea. I've also never felt like anyone really even mentioned using it outside of the one BoS mission and even then I just got out and went about my killing.

It's not required, just extremely helpful the first 20 or so levels on Survival until you can get good armor peices and ballistic weave.

The only place you would really need it is the Glowing Sea. But if you want to venture there without, be sure to bring a lot of RadX and Radaway.
