why is rage a bigger game than skyrim

Post » Tue Aug 09, 2011 5:17 pm

so rage will be 22 gb to install on the xbox but the system requirements to install skyrim onto a pc is 15 gb. rage is said to have 500 animations per character model that will use up a lot of the 22 gb. so why does skyrim not have the same sort of size of a game when its supposed to be so in depth with things to do for hundreds of hours?

I guess it would be Carmack's code. :P

I really don't know. However, Tim Willits did say that if you did everything in RAGE it would take around 20 hours.

probably textures - watch Carmack's 90-minute keynote for the most incredibly detailed explanation of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=4zgYG-_ha28

If I'm not mistaken, Rage runs on new software/technology. With these games, just like L.A. Noire, the disk size does not represent the contents in the game. The tech just lacks good compression techniques to make space for other stuff

Cutscenes, and the amount of data. Skyrim is able to get it all of one disk due to the fact that their aren't any cutscenes where as Rage is going to have a bunch.

I'm sure Bethesda is far more used to having to use compression especially on audio, so I'm sure they save some space in that regard.

I'm sure if you gave both companies the exact same files and told them exactly how to compile everything together, you'd end up with different sized data at the end just because of preferences and experience.

Because RAGE have a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MegaTexture#Virtual_texturing for the whole game world, while Skyrim do not.

Also, using the plug-in system, the actual game world data take a relatively small amount of space compared to most other games. If Skyrim was built using the Id Tech 5 engine or the Unreal 3 engine or whatever, I'm certain the game would take up a lot more space because the plug-in system isn't there.

so what you are all saying is if you were to print out all the code for both games on printer paper skyrim could possibly use up more printer paper. or they could be both the same maybe. you cant tell the size of a game from how big the file is.

Rage= Cutscenes(take A LOT of space) and better graphics( higher res textures) = A LOT of space

Skyrim= No cutscenes (maybe a few but still very little space) and worse graphics( lesss space)= Less space

there isn't more content becuse content doesnt mesure in how much space a game takes. Skyrim will most likely have more content.

Cutscenes only take A LOT of space if they are pre-rendered, and I don't think that's the case with RAGE. It's all about the huge textures.

Do you think there is any chance we will get 4k x 4k textures for the PC version of Skyrim? (perhaps as an official download, if not on the ship disc)

Rage may take up more space, but Elder Scrolls is way better imo and will be a better success.

Where the hell are you getting this information from? There's no way in hell Skyrim would be a 15GB install on Xbox simply because it's by necessity a single-disc game due to its wide open nature. Even with that extra GB the new Xbox disks have that's less than 10GB at the absolute most.

Texture files are about half of the size of any game install. Depending on the size of the textures that they are using this can change the size of a game install pretty dramatically. Doubling a texture size quadruples the size of the file. Sounds and music also can add a few gigabytes too.

You can't really judge the length or complexity of a game simply by its install footprint. There are too many variables, compression and design implementations that could or could not be used.

Because Bethesda and ID use different file formats and different game engines? I know it's hard to believe in, but trust me on that.

Isn't that the same web page that's been around since January?

i think they are just estimating, since there has been absolutely no official sys requirements released AFAIK

How could they possibly know it will be 15 GB if the game is not even finished yet?

As the site itself says "Note: These are the predicted system requirements."

i.e, "We're totally guessing. These are wrong."

Why is Skyrim smaller than Daggerfall? Shouldn't the games be getting BIGGER?
