Why no sandbox

Post » Wed Mar 19, 2014 11:21 am

Why do you think this was not made into a open world sandbox?????????????

I know this is a pointless topic now,but i'm curious what you all think is the reason why they did not go with a open world sandbox type a game like all of the other TES games.

Please don,t tell me its not possible either. Other MMORPG games have done it.

Define sandbox.

The last time this came up, there were two full pages of different definitions.

Zoning allows to control the flow of the megaservers. By zoning people based on alliance, their quest decisions and location, they are allowed to control server population density to a larger extent, increasing the overall performance for players.

What appears to be a game that has no servers is really a game that just handles their whole population in a different way.

Because in reality most people don't like just chopping wood!

More to the point why would it be? No TES has been so far.

Because it's an Elder Scrolls game and they are very much a themepark.

Did you even search this forum for an existing thread about this before starting another one?

You mean like no loading screen between zones? Because the game is preety much sandbox to me, as most of the mmorpgs.

The biggest problem with ESO is... its niether. It is not sandbox nor theme park, in order to make ESO open to everybody they couldnt do a good snadbox just as well they couldnt do good theme park and so the game is stuck somewhere between. Not sure if it is good though.

For realz!!!!!

I ran everywhere looking for this mythical "Sandbox" everyone has been talking about. I found nothing. No playground with monkey bars or a sandbox.

Sooooo...... Minecraft? I'm confused. I don't think I've ever seen a "sandbox" MMO. There is always some level system or line you have to wait in (skill progressions, levels, etc) to achieve certain things.

So in a "sandbox" mmo would you just allow people to run all over the world, everyone would be the same level, and there would be no sense of progression.... so again... Minecraft? I already have it, thanks :)

Themepark games are on rails. Far as I remember I could do what ever the hell I wanted to do in any of the TES games. I was not restricted to any one place. I make my character and I could go where ever I wanted to.

This lvl 50+++ crap is dumb. I think they could have done a way better system. Why can't I make a Argonian and go where I want even though I might get killed.

Open world sandbox means I see other players anywhere in the world without stupid instances. The world feels more alive. No other game has come close to what EQ did back in 1999.

It surprised a lot of people. The past 3 titles of TES definitely presented a situation where one could imagine an open world sandbox game being just amazing. I would suggest still giving it a try though, the game is very playable.

because sandbox games are horribly boring.

yeah sure, in theory they sound all cool and fun, but when actually put in pratice its a horribly boring type of game. EVE is my example, it is a pure sandbox game, and it is incredibly boring.

I would much rather have a game filled with characters and quests I care about, and are actually fun, than a world filled with nothing but [censored]'y players that are trying to control everything and robbing me blind every corner I go around.

Sandboxes attract cats, the cats do their business in the sandbox which in turn the kids get sick from. Everyone knows that!

sandbox - the game where developers gives you tools and its all about u how u use them :)

the only game comes to my mind that is sandbox-like is EVE. or maybe Runescape or Minecraft :D

Oh right. We've already established that no one wants to play those games any more. Well, maybe a few but not enough for publishers to fund the expense of building a giant open world for a few thousand people to gank each other. If there was a market, you'd see them or at least there would be dozens of Kickstarter projects.

because people don't who are only interested in questing don't want to have random ass players from another alliance running in and killing them all the time. I for one don't, if I want PVP, or PVE with the risk of getting ganked, I'll go to cyrodiil. but in the PVE zones I want to be left to my own devices and not fear that a load of VR10's from another alliance are going to camp the area that my next quest is based killing all the low level people trying to finish it. it would just be stupid and frustrating, not fun at all.

and like people have said, the time for those games are over. the people that actually want them are in the minority, and apparently very very loud. if you want a game like this go off and make, don't try and drag this game down with you because you want to feel powerful and validated by ganking people who just want to do PVE.

Nope thats pretty spot on. TES games are very much themepark. Just because you can wander around ignoring quests and the main point of the game doesn't make it a sandbox game.

One thing I will say is that the world is big enough and open enough for them to expand some sandbox into it. If they play their cards right over the first year after launch and focus on adding content and expanding player options this game could grow to be the best game ever.

Lets just hope they have the Semblance of mind to ignore the whiney pvp crowd. Those freaks are never happy and they can spin the dev cycle out of control for these games quite fast. Only time will tell.

Actually, I think that the reason that ESO does not have Sandbox elements (like Wildstar for example) is because of the Faction Lock: ZOS had to create three full games so that a player in each Alliance could basically play a full game. Thus there were no recourses left over to create Sandbox elements.

You are only partly right, and only if you are referring to console versions. The reality is that you had total control of your game experience in TES and on PC that was expanded exponentially with custom content.

I do not think you even understand the anology of theme park vs sandbox.
