Why do scaled helmets look so ridiculous

Post » Thu Mar 06, 2014 5:14 am

So I finally have a character that wears scaled armor, which looks great. He wears it with steel Nordic gauntlets and boots. I wanted to add a head piece to have two items of each armor type, but the only helmet that comes remotely close to fitting the character (he is a warlock), is the scaled helmet, which looks ridiculous, in and of itself, with those goat horns.

I mean, luckily for mods I found a "padded hood" that gives a light armor bonus, seen here:

Compared to this (I want to intimidate my foes, not have them laugh at me!):

I mean what is with that?

I was going to go a different way with it, using heavy gauntlets and helmet, with the scaled armor and boots:

...but that spike on top of the helmet just turns me off to it.

Dilemmas, dilemmas...

Maybe try the fur armour helmet.

All of the horned helmets look a bit silly in my opinion.

This is why I never wear helmets. ESPECIALLY light armor ones.

Blessed are the PC users, for they shall inherit the earth.

Light helms always look ridiculous. I'll be mixing and matching on my next playthrough. Light armour with a heavy helm. ;)

Meh... I always thought the Elven and Glass helmets looked awesome in Skyrim. Then again, I'm a fan of those armors in general. A shame the Khajiit head removes the backs of those helms, making the Elven helm look like a Lemonhat.

Is that a glitch, or a design choice?

Design choice, due to the unusual shape of Khajiit and argonian heads - they're only 2/3rds the height of the other race's heads, due to their animalistic faces. To allow them to wear helmets fitted for normal races, most of the skull-fitting helms (Including the HOrned Steel Helm) are tilted back and have the backs of the helmet removed.

I have agree with the title of this thread. I personally think scaled armor is not a good look for a Nord. Not considering that Skyrim is the coldest part of Tamriel

Yeah, I know the Nords are supposed to be tough, but the clothing and armour designs really harm the illusion that Skyrim is a cold place in my opinion. I'm guessing the developers came to the same conclusion when making Dragonborn, because the http://images.uesp.net/c/ca/DB-item-Skaal_Clothes_Male.jpg are a big improvement.

It's one thing having warriors and perhaps civilians who are indoors wear normal clothing/armour, but the civilians walking around outside should be dressed more like the Skaal.

Exactly. I was expecting to see chainmail shirts or metal plate armor over or under fur coats to give that insulation from the cold appearance. Not leather and scaled gimp costumes I imagine better climatised to Hammerfell.

Not wanting to sound too cynical as some of the armors look amazing but I agree that the Nord light armors were poor. I agree that the Skaal fur armor was what I was expecting more

I also would have preferred the hold guards armor to be heavy armor with better A.R. as they are basically suits of steel chainmail with clothe over which in reality isn't light. They also looked pretty cool so having higher A.R. would have been nicer for a stamina maxed out warrior

I've never worn the helmets with horns, except for the iron helmet. You know. Like the advertising guy?

Day_Man, I totally agree with you on the scale helm. I do like the scale armor but have never been a fan of helms, and there are some pretty odd looking ones in this game. The iconic iron helm looks pretty awesome on males. I don't know why they made the horns on it look different on us ladies, unless it is the same thinking that made Microsoft market a pink controller.

Picture no. 1 your guy looks very dashing.

Picture no. 2 :nope:

Picture no. 3

I personally use a mod that replaces circlets for helms and gives the bonus but that hood helm really looks awesome.

The Lemonade Cult from Romantically Apocalyptic immediately comes to mind. http://31.media.tumblr.com/be92e830142b0878bf7ff78c8b38c168/tumblr_mlx748kQVU1s2yb86o1_1280.jpg
