Why is my screen resolution 1536x864?

Post » Tue Oct 29, 2013 12:22 pm

http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/6112/wudr.png My computer is telling me my resolution is 1920x1080, but I know this is not correct, because...

This site http://www.whatismyscreenresolution.com/ (along with others) is saying my screen resolution is 1536x864.

And 1920x1080 wallpapers don't fit on my background.

I've also noticed some windows are larger than they should be. What can I do to fix this?

Is this a laptop?

Then your screen resolution is probably just that 1536, which is common for 15 inch laptop screens. Check your laptop specs (Google it). Now, the reason it is an option is you can connect an external monitor or even flat screen TV and run 1920 for that device.

If this is your PC monitor, then try installing the driver for that monitor so the system knows what it can do.

17.3-inch laptop.

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/8738/khu9.png Nvidia control panel is also saying 1920x1080 is my native resolution.

That's usually 1600 by 900 or so, Google the model number (look underneath, it is on a sticker) and find out if you don't have the manual.

Update your drivers. Get the latest set from MSI.

How do you know besides some hardware website, that are generally fallible, that you are not running 1920? If it is just the wall papers, there are lots of other reasons why a wall paper does not display or fit right.

You can also have accessibility options zooming your screen and other Windows settings that may be messing things up. If this is Windows 8, that has a different looking UI, so that can add to the confusion.

Edit You might also open a chat session with MSI Tech Support, sometimes they can walk you through things to check on their machines. Also, this might be a Power setting where the laptop runs at lower resolution unless there is a source that needs a higher res. Look in your Power Options.

I haven't updated my drivers yet, I am downloading something right now, so I plan to do it after that. I am running Windows 7. Why wouldn't 1920x1080 wallpapers not fit on a 1920x1080 desktop? I've noticed Windows Explorer is larger than it should be (as if my resolution were lower). The minimize and exit buttons to the top right are much larger than they should be.

You may want to check your DPI settings (I think that's what they're called) as well.

One would hope that he has already gone into his desktop properties and made sure that it was set to 1920 by 1080.....

Somewhere in the display settings. Have you tried the second link in your first image where it says to adjust the sizes?

Sorry, I haven't used Windows in well over a year.

I read on another forum that this was a likely cause. 125% zoom on 1920x1080 gets you your problematic resolution.

Another test would be to loadd up a known 1080 wallpaper and make it 100% zoom. If it filles your screen just fine then you are indeed at the proper resolution.

That link didn't work for me, so I used this.

http://www.mrwallpaper.com/wallpapers/Blue-Planet-Earth-1920x1080.jpg

Setting it as my desktop background, it does not fit when I select for it to be centered. It fits when I select stretch (at least according to Firefox's preview window).

I'm not sure what you mean by 100% zoom. In Windows Photo Viewer, it will fill the screen no matter the resolution if it's 16:9.

Have you changed the size from 125% to something lower?

I'll let you know when I do. The download is in the browser, so if I log off, it goes away.

You probably don't need your drivers to fix this.

Close your browser and change the settings. don't wait 30 minutes to fix this.

I wish I could wait 30 minutes to fix this. Estimated time is 6 hours. Anyways, I can't close my browser without cancelling the download. And I can't log off without closing everything.

Can you minimize the browser window just to get a piece of desktop to right click on? Alternately, Start>Control Panel>Display and do it on top of your download.

Yes, of course. I literally need to log off to change DPI. http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/2056/of0z.png
