so why no servers on console?

Post » Fri Mar 12, 2010 12:55 pm

isnt leaving a console running the same as leaving a PC running? as long as they both have some room to breathe they shouldnt have a problem?

or do you mean the way the software n stuff runs on a console that it isnt designed to set up a server very easily?

If you intend to run your computer as a dedicated server, you typically will give it the hardware to do it. Because consoles all have the same hardware, and its all geared towards gaming, they aren't very good at acting as servers.

The CPUs in modern consoles are more of a hybred between a CPU and a GPU, rather than something you would have in a PC. In addition, servers would benefit from archetecture that can process large amounts of information quickly, rather than multi tasking that you find in PCs and consoles. Consoles generally only have as much ram as required for games, and servers usually require large hard drive.

People who know more about this than me, feel free to correct.

To confirm, we're only using dedicated servers on PC.

More RAM, better CPUs.
Consoles are just too limited to work as proper servers.

You also have to keep in mind that consoles, for the most part, have the same specs that they did when they came out. I wouldn't use a 5 year old computer as a dedicated server.

But games are made to work on console where as everyones PC is different n the games have diff spec requirements don't they? N in p2p you have 1 console acting as a host, with the players averagey connection, dedicated is on better connection, what else is different?

In reply to gstaff I understand no servers on console. The thread is on why there are none.

PC has better usage of dedicated servers. Consoles pretty much overall svck, and need to do P2P, and MS/Sony disallow it I believe [or make it annoying/difficult/etc to have them].

Better usage? Why so? Easier to do I believe but I don't see why pc make better use of them.

-People can set game settings to their own personal way
-People can use their own dedicated server to host games
-Server browsing is more on the PC side then console
-PC users have a variation of computers, so if it was P2P, players with bad computer would lag horribly to players with good ones, on console, everybody uses the same hardware

Is P2P like Matchmaking on Halo or CoD?

P2P just means that the host is decided by finding the person with the lowest average ping, rather than players all joining a server.

Yeah it picks 1 player to host instead of a server hosting n you all join the server.

Tune - I only really saw 1-2 valid points. Main one being they can set up own servers. Setting up own game settings could easily be added? Unless you mean player created content. Players Internet also varies a lot, n in p2p the host can't always cope with hosting the game but has the better connection in that game, if that made sense lol

Exactly. Games run well on consoles because a console's soley purpose is to run these games.

PCs do have different configurations and also allow configurations specialised for hosting a game-server.

consoles are made to play games, it's all they're made for.

for those who don't know, to make a good dedicated server you need to leave that computer alone, putting a dedicated server on a console and using that same one to play on that server(if at all possible) would be just as laggy, or possibly even laggier than using P2P

Also, the PC communities are used to see or develop mods sometimes. Mods are probably easier to distribute and play through servers than P2P ? Also, ded servers allow for some customization of the gameplay that could be more difficult to handle in P2P, isn't it ?
So basically, P2P is more fit for the common console philosophy (play quickly and with "friends", don't waste time on lists of servers with possible different settings), while servers are more adapted to common PC philosophy (checking settings to find the best feeling, mods, clan-based servers, filter servers on ping/popularity...). I don't put one "philosophy" above the other though, and it's just an idea...

I am getting the PC version, but it would be nice if the console versions could use dedicated servers like Section 8 did, which basically allows you to set up servers like for PC and a server browser to connect to them.

Well yeah I dont think being a server n playing is very good but isn't that what p2p is pretty much like? One guys console gets picked as host n everyone else connects through him.

probably yes, but peer2peer works in the game, dedicated server works from out of the game into it. err, probably not correctly said, i don't know exactly how it works, you should ask someone else:p
but the point is, peer2peer is made to work while your console is playing, dedicated server is made to work on a computer that won't be playing that game. last time i put up a dedicated server i noticed that pc couldn't even start the game.

I like it when console go dedicated :) yay! Shame it's out near brink!!!

Look at MW2.... PC players revolted.

Why? Cause they know Ded servers are a must.

Console players on the other hand are largely ignorant, so they can safely save hundreds of thousands of dollars without impact on sales.

I'm a console player for the record, and wish more console players would demand proper treatment.

Yea I think I mentioned this game already. Its from Kaos Studios and I played there previous game Frontlines Fuel of War. A fun game with some problems. If Brink is a game from small squad based combat, Homefront is your game for big vehicle/infanty game. I am looking forward to it.

I may get both then, at mo I'm all for brink but will look into the other. I didn't like that fuel of war. This home front looks better though.

Reply to other as well, yeah I wish more console players demanded higher standards but as you say pc players were smart, most consolers settle for less :(
