Why Shouldn't Kanye Record A Bowie Tribute Album?

Post » Tue Jan 26, 2016 1:08 pm

So the inteweb is in uproar in response to Kanye West's decision to record a "David Bowie Tribue Album".

Here's a link to make it real: http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/petition-launched-to-stop-kanye-west-recording-david-bowie-tribute-album-a6821271.html

Who are we to tell Kanye West what he can or can't record?

I've heard some amazing covers in my time and I've heard some pretty rubbish ones too.

If you're not a fan or don't approve... don't give him your money.

As for cashing in on David Bowie's death... I'm confident he doesn't really need the money.

Should he? Shouldn't he?

(To be honest I'm not sure which made me laugh harder... the indignant reaction on social media or the suggestion of a "Kanye West David Bowie Tribute Album" in the first place).

I'm a fan of Kanye's older work. I found that over the years he's just been getting angrier and angrier.

There was a time where he used to rap about his struggles with God and who he planned to be when he "made it." Now he just calls people out and whines about how he can't be a fashion designer.

I still have some hope for him though. There's something about being a parent and having children that can totally bring you back down to earth.

So fingers crossed!

Seeing as how I pretty much despise Kanye due to him being such a whining little [censored] I can only hope this doesn't happen, and if it does, that no-one buys it.

Depends on what lies behind his intentions. Maybe he just wants to make easy money.

Because people think he's a pile of Brahmin poo trying to cash in on a very famous musician's death? It'd be like Stephen Fry doing a docudrama on Robin Williams' life shortly after his suicide with Stephen Fry starring as Robin Williams. Not that I have any opinion on Stephen Fry or anything, but you could see how many might not like that happening.

Can Kanye West even keep a note without tone correcting software? Adding a tone corrector to a Bowie song would have him spinning in his grave.

That's why he waited til after Bowie died before announcing it.

It's just publicity. He noticed a bunch of people talking about how sad they are Bowie died, and decided this will keep him relevant and popular in the meantime.

The guy needs to be at the forefront of media headlines if he's gonna run for president in 2020, which he announced.

As for the op, I think kanye should be allowed to do this in a free market. I think it's stupid and there's no way I'm gonna give this album the time of day, but he should be allowed to do it if he wants.

People should see this for what it is though, publicity, not a tribute.

At least he isn't doing a Lemmy tribute..

If he were to announce that all the proceeds were to go to cancer research (or a corresponding charity) he would gain a lot of credibility for the recording.

Otherwise he's just cashing in, which would make him in my opinion an even bigger bucket of rectums than he already is.

Eh, he's a musician, he can do what he wants. He's certainly successful enough by now to choose his own projects.

Whether I would buy the album is my choice. As I can't say I've purchased any music of his in the past, I can't see that's going to change any time soon.

What I absolutely have no right to do, as I see it, is tell him what to do.

To me, its that simple. But the internet being what it is, no one gets to do anything without someone deciding they need to be outraged by it.

Kanye is pretty obviously cashing in on this. There's no such thing as too much money for some people. As for taste, I liked some of his older songs, but his new music is, in my opinion, washed up.

He can do whatever he wants. I just dont think it would do Bowie's music legacy any justice. Kanye's been somewhat of a joke as a person and artist since the Taylor Swift rant days.

Not that I have any clear idea who Kanye West is but who really cares if he does an album of Bowie covers? It's not as though there aren't some truly awful efforts out there already - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3L-bTza_7-I

That was actually not a bad cover. There were worse ones.

I would rather see an album from various artists and donating the proceeds to fight Cancer. Maybe something to do with the President and Vice Presidents Moonshot to end Cancer.

Never been a fan of Kanye and his arogance sickens me. With that said I hope he is making this record as a fan of Bowie to truly honor him. I'd feel better if the earnings were going to cancer research.

Yea Kanye can make w/e he wants to. Doesn't mean anyone (myself included) has to buy it though. In fact, if he isn't donating the earnings to cancer then I would hope no one buys it.

Going to add that if none or at least a large portion of it goes to some form of cancer charity, I hope the album bombs.

He can certainly do what he wants with the caveat that commercial endeavors are generally subject to the approval of the copyright holders in most countries, especially the U.S.

But I'd be much more interested if he's producing a tribute album with other artists than actually recording an album his own self.

Why is this news? It's an un-sourced, unverified rumour from a disreputable British tabloid, and even the petition only had 750 signatures before it was reported by the Independent.

This

Other recent stories from the Star include Ghostbusters telling us when the world will end and the newly discovered planet possibly going to smash into Earth this year.

If Kayne West does record a Bowie cover album thats his choice. I doubt I'll buy it, remakes of anything rarely match the original experience.

He can do it, sure, but we don't have to like it. We don't have to agree with him and support him by buying that album.

Even though he is a total low life that I absolutely depise, he should still be able to make the album if he decides.

I'll agree with most. He can do what ever he wants.

I too would like to see the proceeds going to cancer research rather than padding his already huge bank account though. I suspect, it wont happen. (Without a huge public outcry....hey wait...)

As to buying it, nope. Not now, nor have I ever cared to listen to anything he's put out and I'm not going to start now. Not my kinda music.

Nor is he someone I could respect. (Based off his public image, what I know of it at least. The guy is a....)

Agreed. He can do whatever he wants, obviously, but it does sounds like a bit of a cash-in. Then again, if it increases awareness of Bowie's work among people that otherwise wouldn't be exposed to it then I guess it wouldn't be the worst thing.

He's not it was a media beat up, he never even mentioned it, the media made the whole story up.

He probably would've personally announced it if he were going to, correct?
