Why is Skyrim a DX9 game?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 1:50 pm

seriously, there are older games that have DX10 support. Hell even WOW added a DX10 option and look how old that game is!

Bethesda: PLEASE make a DX10/DX11 option for us PC gamers!!!

what's the point of "Ultra" settings when there are bugs like the shadows being jaggy/blocky and "flickering"....?????

thanks

Because the game sadly isn't fully optimised for PCs... :(

Because it was ported from the 360. Same reason why it doesn't support 4gb of ram. That's my guess.

I always get a smug sensation when I hear that Skyrim is optimized for the console.

Same reason the textures are low res, same reason the UI is bad, same reason the shadows are atrocious and the flowing water looks like its in a glass tube. The game was made for xbox. At least we get to mod it, but this game could have used DX11 so hardcoe. Imagine the entire game looking like Unigine's heaven Demo (but with better textures hopefully because heaven was kinda low res)

With Tesselation in DX11:

No tesselation DX9:

watch both in 720p. Just posting this for those who have not seen it. Skyrim could have benefitted greatly from DX11, would have been the game to beat!

Not necesarily, but it would mean more detailed rounder ones

Also DX11 is available for vista, and games are always backward compatible down to dx9...

That made about as much sense as a pink elephant flying to pluto on New Year's Eve.

PC gamer's fault. (the ones that don't BUY bethesda games)

You go to work everyday so that you can make money for your family and feed your wife, your kids, and pay for all of those things, and one day hopefully have successful children and retire one day.

Game developers have the same aspirations. Because of piracy PC is now the least lucrative market for bethesda. They love it passionately, but game development studios gotta eat too.

Personally, the Unigine Heaven demo always bugs the heck out of me, because all those rocks are about 400% too bumpy. Of course, they exaggerated the effect to show it off, but it's still annoying that people keep gushing about how amazing it looks. (Kind of like people keep going on about the replacement texture packs for Oblivion, but I can't stand them because people keep thinking that lots of noise/grain/contrast = good textures. :banghead:)

DX11 [censored] all over DX9. I once heard, in an article before Skyims release, that Bethesda was was trying to make the biggest and best game possible, not make the most sales. I dont know about you guys, but that stinks of lies.

because the current gen of consoles do not support such a thing and this game was ported from consoles to the pc and i suspect adding on directx 11 support would be to much work.

Its a benchmark, so they wanted to [censored] every computer with max tessellation on (which is what I did and what the vids show). The fact the stone road is over done does not affect my point. Skyrim would have looked amazing with high res textures and DX11 effects like tessellation.

And your looking at the wrong texture packs. Only texture packs done from scratch with new textures or textures made from high res photos are worth looking at, not blown up sharpened textures. Have not seen many of those though. Quarls texture pack III for oblivion was nice. And there is a nice 2048x2048 texture pack which is almost complete for DL on skyrim nexus, looks promising.

Maybe because Dx10 and Dx11 are scams and don't really offer much in the way of technical innovation in comparison to some of their predecessors? Not to mention the fact that many of the people playing the game don't have rigs that can handle some of those features, anyway? Not to mention, PC gamers make up less than 20% of the retail sales? Marginal costs outweight the marginal benefits? Just some food for thought.

I could perhaps accept that if they HADN'T made a PC version of Skyrim at all.
But since they DID, why not make it the best POSSIBLE PC version ?
How 'bout that for aspiration ?

OK, dense old man question here. Since I really don't know how to tell what version of DX is running with the game but I do know how to look in directories with Explorer, Why is there a folder under the Skyrim folder labeled DX10? Is it there just for the basic hell of it? Or are there some resources being used from it? This is a serious question. Would like to know.

Lets be honest here, dx10 and dx11 were both scams to get more gamers to buy Vista and Windows 7. Neither of them really offer a huge leap forward in innovation and dx9 has been the most reliable tool for awhile now. How long has dx10 been out now? Atleast 3+ years, and yet we still aren't seeing many companies making games that are using that technology, exclusively. This isn't a coincidence, logic should tell you the reason companies still cling to dx9 so much is because its simply BETTER.

Supporting DX10 or 11 is a nice to have. It gives some extra features to improve graphics.

Supporting DX9 is a must have. XBox and XP PCs require it. Neither can run 10 or 11.

So if I were making a game I'd be really sure it could work with DX9. If there were time I'd have an option for DX10 or 11. But it couldn't get released without being able to run on a DX9 machine.

Some games can support both which is cool and all, but when the crunch comes and they're trying to figure what to cut so they can release the game before they run out of money, DX10 or DX11 support is going to get cut whereas DX9 support never will.
