Why Skyrim map is different than original?

Have you noticed, that the Skyrim map in the official Tamriel map is somewhat diffent than the map in TES5: Skyrim?

For example:

- There are villages that doesn't exist at all.

- The city of Markarth with a touch of Dwemer architecture is supposed to be ancient, but why it's located quite differently in TES5: Skyrim than in the official map of Tamriel?

- Even in TES: Arena, there was cities in Skyrim that doesn't exist in TES5: Skyrim, not even as ruins or anyway

- Between Riverwood and Falkreath (which is also located quite differently), is there really locations named Neugrad or Oakwood?

- Village of Greenwall in the map of Tamriel is located across another road than the fort Greenwall near Riften...

- There is more. What you have found out?

Some of the villages were probably destroyed by a hero, he ruined the local economy and they had to move.

This is an old map dating back to 2005, made by fans from data coming from previous games.

It's that way with all the games. A couple of towns and areas in Vvardenfell maps did not make it into Morrowind. It happened again with Oblivion. There will probably be something missing from whichever province we see in TES VI too. They just can't cram everything into one game, I think.

It isn't an official map.

You'll notice that it happened to several forts: Neugrad, Greenwall, Sungard, Amol, Snowhawk.

If you're interested, http://steamcommunity.com/id/ThirteenOranges/myworkshopfiles/?appid=72850 made mods adding some of these villages to Skyrim.

Not sure but if you hit the "B" button on your XBox 360 and then press "Down" on the D Pad it will call up an Official Map of "Skyrim".

http://www.imperial-library.info/sites/default/files/imagecache/node-gallery-display/anthology%20map.jpg. It was included in the Anthology. Of course there are also individual province maps in each game. And I guess there's also combined http://www.imperial-library.info/sites/default/files/imagecache/node-gallery-display/gallery_files/mapbigtamriel1.1.jpg, but that's probably outdated.

Lore reasons possibly, it has been 200 years since the Oblivion crisis. Skyrim like the other provinces may have suffered some loses. That is at least my idea of why they could be excluded from the game. I mean it was an old fan made map, but these cities realistically could have been destroyed

True that the map linked was fan-made, HOWEVER, the fact remains that - as the OP remarked - there were cities and settlements in Arena that simply disappeared. Some were turned (without explanation) into rather generic forts, while others were simply wiped from existence (I'm afraid the ravages of 200 years time can not sufficiently account for this).

Unfortunately, it's all part of a pattern of technological-limitation-induced retconning. It makes sense, but at the same time, I dearly hope that as technological limitations begin to whither away, Bethesda might consider returning to places like Skyrim, Cyrodiil, and Vvardenfell (might as well be all of Morrowind) in the future - in order to experience more lore-faithful representations of Tamriel. It pains me to see such brilliant lore go to waste.

Yes, that one of course, but this map contains only the major cities, so there isn't the small ones to argue with.

Yes, but please, only after every other provinces have been seen. Morrowind without Wardenfell would be acceptable though...
