Why Is Skyrim So Much More Expensive in the US?

Post » Mon Oct 17, 2011 4:27 am

I would pay $200 + for Skyrim, if I had to.

So you're saying you'd pay the same price for a game as the console you play it on? No offense, but that's somewhat ridiculous. I know you love Skyrim, hell we all do... But I wouldn't pay 200 bucks for a piece of software... I'd steal it and then upload a pirated version of the game to the internet.

Look at this.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004G5YW5Y/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

now look at this.

http://www.amazon.com/Elder-Scrolls-V-Skyrim-Pc/dp/B004HYIAPM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1318744597&sr=8-3

Both are the PC versions of Skyrim. Yet, why is the American version so much more expensive?

UK version = £27.89
If you convert the pounds to dollar value, the UK version comes out to $43.8514. What gives?

Why do Americans have to pay $59.99 for this?

You think you have problems? the Australian price is going to be at least $80, minimum. and that's Australian dollars which are worth more than US dollars anyway. so svck it up, basically. games in Europe are always dirt cheap (compared to Australia anyway), all the extra competition I'd say. :sadvaultboy:

Europe used to pay more for games then America not so long ago, guess the tables turned.

We still do (with the exception of the UK). In Germany the game costs ~65$ for the PC (thats the best price here, normally its ~70$!) and ~80$ for consoles.

But, thanks to my new CC, i ordered in the UK, and even with the additional postage its cheaper than here, plus i won't have to worry about a crappy translation (like the one in Oblivion). :celebration:

No, we're not a colony anymore. We haven't been a colony for over 100 years. We are a sovereign nation.

Also, to all of you americans, just because i feel I have to make this point. Some of my friends went to california a while ago, and it shocked me what they thought about canada. Canadians do not have a weird accent, and we live pretty much the exact same as americans do, we just have a little bit more space and cleaner air. I'm only saying this because once an american actually asked me if Canadians lived in log cabins...

The same crap happens between states, people are just dumb in general down here. I'm from Nebraska, when people from the coasts find out they tend to ask if I eat a lot of corn and if I have internet.

But yeah, exchange rates, the Pound (or are we talking Euros?) is worth more than the US Dollar.

Honestly, there is no point complaining about the Australian prices (I live in Melbourne just for the record).

Our Minimum wage is DOUBLE the US, hence why compared to them we seem to get overcharged but in reality the price is in proportion with what we earn as a median in this country.

i dunno. maybe cuz american money isn't worth what it used to be thanks to that [censored] cowboy that used to run your country.

George Bush Jr. you mean? The most [censored] [censored] human being to walk this earth? I was born in the USA and raised in the USA and to say the least, I hate this country and am embarrassed to live here.

Also OP, I wouldn't complain, as it could always be worse ;)

George W. Bush is not the only reason the US economy is in such trouble, he's just one segment of a number of stupid decisions over the last 10 years or so, but I digress.

Let's compare the CE prices shall we:

$149.99 = £94

While it's being sold here at

£129.99 = $205

this!. Compare most products, and USA prices are cheaper. Its not always because of economies of scale either, its often due to how strategically important that market is.

Really? What is minimum wage in Australia? I think it's $7.25 here in the States.

For an advlt (above the age of 20) the minimum wage in Australia is $15.15, according to Fair Work Australia anyway.

Yeah, that'd be about double. $7.25 is the federal minimum for anyone 16 or older in the US, though some states bump it higher, or in a couple, lower under certain circumstances.

In my country, It doesn't even come on 11/11/11 , and when it comes, it will cost about 70-80-90$, no less than that. And every good game costs that much.

We always say how lucky are Americans

Well, unless we're comparing minimum wage employees. An Australian making minimum wage has to work about 13 hours in order to make $200. An American making minimum wage has to work about 20.5 hours to make $150.

[censored] and pillaging. Otherwise known as capitalism. Aussies love to complain about how much more they pay than everyone else for the same game, but they still buy. Why lower the price if they continue to buy whilst complaining?

Dunno about you, but I feel like I am doing my part by purchasing only 1 game this year and that is Skyrim. All those other AAA titles? They can wait until they are put in the bargain bin. For $60 US I am not satisfied with a game I will tire of within a few hours. I am not going to buy in at that price...period.

I think if I were an Aussie I would just give up on the video games entirely. They just get [censored] on prices.

You'd think so but it's just so hard not to get that day one purcahase of a game like Skyrim. I guess if we all (as Aussies) decided to import it would make a difference on the industry, but for now theres really no incentive for retailers to drop prices because games still sell really well here.
