Why slow animals?

I always found it funny how in OB that you could catch up to a deer and punch it to death. How do you think animals in skyrim should be handled compared to oblivion?

They are there for you to kill and nothing more. "All they do is chew grass, until something kills them"

i always thought it was cool that I could run as fast as a deer when I was a high enough level. That was at one point my goal in the game! haha. but it would be more realistic if they were faster in the game. I'm pretty sure they figured that out.

What about a bear charging you too? You know full tilt. Now that would be very intimidating.

Deer was fast, however if you raised speed enough it would be higher.

Nothing wrong with overtaking anything, if you use magic. They may have fixed it this time, if there is no speed ( no attributes ) and athletics and acrobatics are merged,( again if ) maybe the sprint will allow us to match them, but just for a short time, much more believable.

I had a first hand experience chasing a deer in real life.

I was riding my bike on a bike path and there was a deer in front of me that couldn't get back into the forest immediately so its only choice was to run from me as fast as it could and I chased it down as fast as I could for the thrill of the chase. It seemed like it was running much faster than the deer in Oblivion could, and it was taking long leaping strides when going faster, so yes I want that to be fixed and I'm expecting it will be because this is Skyrim, not Oblivion. I also want them to be able to jump around or take leaping strides like real deer do.

I'm pretty sure they made animals slow so that characters with no ranged skill could still manage to kill them. I mean, if you were an axe wielder and needed to aquire some venison, you wouldn't have much luck if you couldn't catch them. In short, they made them slow because people would complain if they didn't.

On the other hand, real life deer aren't really all that fast. On level ground in a straight line, I can outrun deer in real life (though they can turn much faster and jump higher so I haven't caught one yet), though certainly not if the deer had a significant start. Deer are nimble and they run efficiently, allowing them to travel at speed for longer than humans (or this human at any rate), but they are not necessarily faster.

Calling bs on your story Pyro.

You must be either really un-intimidating or have very slow deer.

Exactly. How is an Orc wearing a suit of steel armour and wielding a massive warhammer supposed to catch an animal if it's running 40 mph?

Your avatar reveals your bias

Although I agree, monsters should be fast. But, there needs to be a balance so that you can slow one down to run/hunt them down.

Realistically they should be faster, but then we might end up with a bestiary that's mostly faster than us, so fleeing becomes nearly impossible unless we can sprint even faster. Not that we need to flee from deers, but then there's also bears, giant spiders and ice trolls, all of which I would think can be faster than a human.

well it's not bs, whatever you might think, perhaps the deer are slow, or maybe I can run very fast (I can outrun everyone I know). Like I said I haven't caught one yet because, while I may catch up to them a little on a straight stretch, they keep turning and jumping (I lost one when he jumped the creek in one leap). But my point is that the speed that a deer can run is not that far outside the speed that a human can run.

Deer do not charge humans. Bears do, but only if they're hungry or threatened.

Not unless your the fastest person on the planet. I believe the record is 27 mph and that doesn't cut it.

I meant "too" in terms of adding to the discussion not deer charging you. That's ridiculous.

These deer just seem to be out for a stroll, and they're prety fast. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QB7skN-dqWA&feature=related

hm.. those seem to be different deer than the ones I was chasing, the ones in the video are running, while the ones I was chasing were hopping. My assumption is that deer accustomed to living in a forest aren't as fast on open terrain (note that in Oblvion the deer are also in a forest).

Bridgekeeper "So tell me, what is the average running speed of a deer?"
You "One running in the forest or out in the open"
Bridgekeeper "I...I don't know that. AHH!"

Ok you're saying the forest would hamper movement right? It works both ways. You would be just as hampered too and it's the deer's habitat. Of course its going to outrun you in every way.

This is getting off topic. getting too literal I'm all for speeding up the animals in Skyrim giving them some realism and making the hostile one's scarier.
