Why no smoking?

Post » Sat Nov 06, 2010 12:49 pm

I can live with that.

:foodndrink:

The devs also didn't code in the ability for my character to take a leak, or sit down on a toilet and take a crap even though it wouldn't take that much time.

Again that is realism thing. Every Character would have to do that. It has nothing to do with building a character. 1950s America, smoking was a big thing. Fallout has the 1950s mindset as a back drop. If I want a character to smoke I should have one. It would have take no time at all for the Devs to program.

Also what is the big deal about letting people smoke? It would take nothing to program and just like in real life it would be an option. So why no smoking?

That's a very valid point. You see lots of other characters doing it, you see some of the fallout boy icons holding a cigar.

I used to be a smoker and I'm glad I quit. But I'll tell you what, if everything got nuked and I found a carton of ciggs I'd definately light up.
To me it's a role playing element that shouldn't be left out. It's further magnified because it's already HEAVILY in game (NPC's smoking, and a cigarettes are found in every other desk draw / mail box / trash can across the capital wasteland) and it's just PART of the fallout 3 universe. It's like... I can hold a carton of ciggs in my hand but I don't have the option to smoke? I know you'll bring up the bathroom thing again. Yes there are toliets in Fallout but you can't take a dump. But it's different, that's a basic bodily function that EVERYONE must do. It's not a choice with pros and cons. Choices are what makes RPGs interesting.

There's alot of people who don't care about smoking and wouldn't use it so they're saying. meh. On the same note: Should Psycho or Stealth Boys be left out of the game just because you're not interested in using them?

"Hey I wanna be just like my NV Character! Alright, got my Merc Armor and I got my trusty 9mm. Now all I have left is smoking!" Dies in 20 years.

My point was, that there are hundreds...maybe thousands...of activities that won't be in the game, so why keep up the incessant flow of topics asking why? You can't do chin-ups or lift weights, you can't reach out and open a door or grasp a book, you can't cup your hands to your mouth and yell...you can't even blink your eyes. The developers make a decision on whether the animation is required and the game is thus designed.

And if anyone mentions "immurshun", I will find you. Then send Rohugh after you, because a bear is more frightening than a cow. :P

because people have nothing better to do until release, or some new information comes out :P

To people who are under 15 maybe but thats about it. Theres nothing cool about smelling awful, having yellow teeth and so on.

Tell that to Clint Eastwood. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is why I starting smoking... Just kidding I don't need people blaming Hollywood or video games for dumb decision.

It's not that hard. It doesn't take much effort. It would shut a lot of people up. Why not?

I would like the player to be able to smoke as well, even if it doesn't give you any positive effects. I plan on starting this game from a role-playing perspective right from the start, and smoking could suit my character at a certain time in the game.

In Bioshock, smoking decreases HP and increases EP (which for all practical purposes is "mana" for the plasmid powers) by a small bit.

In Metal Gear Solid, 4 in particular, smoking serves no apparent function other than to slowly reduce health, but there's a part of the game where you need to get past some Laser based "tripwires" and smoking allows them to be visible so you can dodge them. In some of the games, you also get a mini-lecture on how smoking is bad and "blah-blah-blah".

Which I thought was kinda funny since Rapture was the ideal 1950's world, with an undying amount of posters about how smoking is good for you.

Still, it's [censored] people are so obnoxiously trying to get a pointless feature in. I'd rather them spend their time coding fixes and smoother gameplay. But hey if smoking over gameplay is your thing, go for it.

Edit- Wait, r-tarded is filtered.....are you serious?

It's a useless feature that serves no purpose. So...how about no.

I just thought it's weired to have all these boxes, cartons and loose cigarettes littering the wasteland with no apparent function except maybe it's trade-in value and that certain NPCs have a "smoking" animation when it is in their inventory. There are http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1739 that enable the player character to use the same "smoking" animation, so it can't be THAT hard to include.

But really, at this point, it would be more "eye candy" than anything else. I just want to play the friggin' game already. How many days until 10/19? I'll tell ya how many. It's TOO many!!!

One of my Fallout 3 characters is in fact a smoker. I myself am not smoker.

As for any not-included feature: there'll be a mod for that. In FWE mod for Fallout 3 smoking temporarily increased charisma and removed tiredness. And smoking it took 5 seconds, not minutes. Of course that is 2.5 minutes in game time, assuming timescale 30. I use 12 so it was only 1 minute :D

I agree that we should have the ability to smoke the cigarettes we find if we so choose. I am a former smoker. I smoked for about 7 years before quitting roughly 6 years ago. I do not support smoking irl because I know what kind of negative health effects it can have but I also am not on some anti-smoking campaign. The only people I will try to convince not to smoke are my children. But in a game, I think everyone should have the option to smoke or not to smoke if the resources (cigs) exist. Give it an addiction like everything else has and you're set.

I think if they added smoking, people who would want to buy it wouldn't be able to. It's rated M for Mature right now. Which means only people like 16+ can buy. So imagine smoking added, that would would be like 18+. So that's like half of their profits gone because of one feature.

hope your joking or something because i have a that has ''tobacco refrences'' and ''alcohol refrences'' and its rated e10+

Hmmm... Either way, a little http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbKQklwNScA to ponder while we discuss the pros and cons of smoking in Fallout...

I've been playing through FO3 some more and I've REALLY started noticing just how many people smoke. It's ridiculous.

Is it really that ridiculous though?
In a stressful world where everyday could be the day of your death, Where the water is irradiated and the life expectancy is low already, in a world where smoking has not even been proven to harm your health yet, why would you not smoke a calming ciggie every now and again? What have You really got to lose?

Besides, there is hardly any soap around, so its not like you don't stink already. :)

(P.S, I am not encouraging smoking in real life, merely as a role playing element of a role playing game)

I don't think that smoking should make them worry about cancer. Radiation is a much bigger factor for it :)

In FWE, smoking adds a small bonus in personality, but a drop in endurance for just a little while (only a few minutes), so its a nice bonus before you talk to an NPC for some information or bartering. It also gave you a small bit of rads.

They are used just like meds, so anyone saying "feature" really doesn't understand how easily this could be implemented. Fallout 3 already had an NPC smoking animation, so the modder(s?) just took that and applied it to the character.

Love ur avatar Orzorn.

I really need to give this FWE a go now. Not much of a mod fan myself, but then again maybe I haven't downloaded the right ones.
