Why no smoking?

Drinking DOES NOT have positive benefits....

It depends on how much one drinks. Some people do become more daring, verbally clever and charismatic under the influence.

Indeed, but drinking certainly doesn't act like instantaneous steroids!

Actually, come to think of it the bonus associate with drinking should boost Charisma more than anything.

you can't reach out and open a door

It seems so obvious now that I've seen it in writing. Why wouldn't they have added this?

Boost? Pfffft...maybe boost everyone else's apparent Charisma while your character is drunk. Beer Goggle city.

There is a mod for fallout three, which adds smoking but not only cigs but joints as well. Cigs in the mod give 1+ charisma.

Yes but like most mods it was gimmicky and so buggy it was useless.

I mean I kinda wanted the badassery of mini gunning a horde of super mutants while chugging down a cig.

So it's been confirmed there will be no smoking? :sadvaultboy: I agree with the OP. We can do all those bad things but smoking is crossing the line? Guess you can't fight the anti-smoking lobby, they're just to powerful. FO3 had smokes all over the place. Characters smoked but we can't. It's an RPG, rated M for mature. I should be able to smoke. If you don't want your character to smoke then don't.

I guess I should be happy getting drunk and prostitution is back in fallout.

I made a topic simillar to this months ago.

I agree. Unfortunately I'm not optimistic that this will make it into New Vegas. It doesn't make any sense. I think at a bare minimum we should be able to use a ciggarette like all the other drugs you pick up in the wasteland.

I'll make a compromise...yeah I would like some 3rd person animations for the various drugs. But I think it owuld be more practical to just allow your character to use a cig and have a positive effect simillar to mentats or boost charisma and then perhaps make you fatigue. Withdrawls, exct just like all the other drugs.

If I can shoot someones head clean off I should be able to use a fraggin' cig in the game :gun: Oh wait where did their head go?

It's enough for me that other NPCs smoke. I would like to think that my character made at least one healthy decision in their life.

Still seems odd with all the things we can pick to do. We can't smoke. I can have a real evil character as bad as Attila the Hun if I wanted to be. I can kill and enslave the whole wasteland and eat the bodies if I want but I can't smoke?

Smoking was a big thing in the 1950s culture. I can see why the devs of FO3 had characters smoke and had cigarettes all over the wasteland. The man in the header right above Bethesda's logo has a pipe!.

If we can't smoke at least take away all the cigarettes or at least make them very rare. That way I won't think "man it svcks we can't smoke." Then I will go off and get drunk, gamble and beat a whole town to death.

I don't see how it would even work in a FPP game... what? A disembodied cigarette or cigar floating in the middle of the screen? Or just the instant consumable like in Bioshock? A little wisp of smoke passing the screen?
It's not like there wasn't ANY smoking in Fallout, just not by the character played by the gamer. I guess stuff like this is where you havta just rely on your imagination for a little bit.

You do use 3rd person right?

NPCs smoking adds realism, but having a script running on you walking with a smoke seems rather tedious. IE running through the fields and a raider comes, and you have to wait till the script ends to work, even if it is just 2-3 seconds of script looping, it's still pretty cumbersome. But, if they DID add it, I think it should have a slight health decrease and a +1 charisma boost (The reason being 1950s culture encouraged it as the social and hip thing)

They might as well let you "use" the cigarettes like an item with some sort of bonus.

So in Fallout you can:
Hire a prosttute.
Kill.
Steal.
Lie.
Gamble.
Do drugs.
Drink alcohol.
Profanity.
ENSLAVE PEOPLE.
EAT PEOPLE FFS.

But you can't smoke a cig. After doing all that don't you kinda need to? lol
It's like the only vice/sin whatever that was left out.

Thoughts?

You really can't expect every human function to be available in a video game. There wouldn't be room for anything else.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts. I mean, c'mon: It's an essential game function to make your characters GO TO THE BATHROOM in The Sims and you watch them do it. However, my character never has to stop to take a leak in Fallout. If that honestly destroys your immersion and gaming experience, then the problem actually lies somewhere between the chair and the keyboard and not with the game itself.

I think it would be easy enough to code if the devs really wanted to add it.

make the cigs an aid item
When you activate one of them code it to turn it into a headgear item that lasts for about 30 seconds
Ive seen mods do things very similiar, dont see why a dev cant do things someone with the civilian version of the G.E.C.K. can.
Id say about +1 charisma, -5 health for 5 seconds?
Also.

Having your character need to go to the bathroom is completely different then smoking. Having to #1 and #2 is a realism thing that every character would have to do. Smoking is an option that we can do or not do. It's a character building thing. We can make really evil characters but smoking is to evil for a wasteland killer?.

Intelligence of Styles = 10.
That is exactly what I've really been trying to say.

Not to mention the badass characters.
I just get a kick out of the idea of chugging down a cig while mini gunning (think i've mentioned this b4).

There's a mod for STALKER in which you can smoke cigarettes and steady your aim. I believe in MGS cigs/cigars can steady your aim as well.
An effect like this would not be unwelcome in New Vegas.

For some characters I would have liked to have an equipable cigarette/cigar/pipe just for looks and role play reasons.

as for consumable cigarettes I dont really care one way or the other.

Considering that the game has such things as alcohol abuse, blood and gore, and drug abuse (among the many things OP already listed), I don't think the devs didn't bother to include smoking because it had anything to do with censorship. I think the mentality was more "Why should we bother using up coding time with this when not very many players are going to care whether they can watch their characters lighting up or not." After all, you can already watch other characters smoking in FO3 right now.
