Why Stormcloaks are better than the Empire

Post » Wed Jul 04, 2012 1:40 pm

The empire is willing to allow their people to be swallowed by the Thalmor for Talos worship ultimatly leading to torment and death will the Stormcloaks support freedom of the Nords from their Aldmeri oppressors. He refuses to sacrifice his beliefs and traditions to a government entitiy just because they "say so"
The Empire aren't really going around prosecuting Talos worship, Heimskr stays in Whiterun after the Empire moves in.

They don't actively war with the Thalmor over it whilst also turning a blind eye to worship in their own cities. It's just a select few unlucky enough to get caught who are actually arrested.

Spoiler
Torygg says in Sovnegarde that he knew he would die, but accepted to keep his honor untainted.
Honestly I find the Civil War to be far to grey to take a decisive stand. I can argue for and against both sides and have done so many times on this site. In the end it is a matter of preference
You could equally argue for both sides since neither is right. And the Empire is like the NCR.

And to Zexis, I agree *partial spoiler* Serana is awesome but you cannot marry her. They should have had some pagan vampire wedding in a cave or given u the option to cure her. ME has multiple highly likable chars thos such as Tali, Liara, Garus, etc.

Not really. If you play Redguard, the Alik'r are essentially in the same fight that the Stormcloaks are facing. Their goals are complimentary. The Dunmer have the same opinion towards outsiders that the Stormcloaks hold. So again, there is common ground. Although this one is complicated since the Argonians have conquered Morrowind. Though, being beast race, they have nothing to gain from the Empire.
Not if they want to live in Skyrim or allow their family to move there. Taking down the Empire doesn't neccesarilly mean aiding the Stormcloaks, and Ulfric doesn't say if he does or does not want to replace the Empire (he probably would use the Thalmor as an excuse to name himself ruler) meaning he could threaten other countries if allowed independence.

Doesn't matter when you're people are being murdered. Seriously, how can anyone rationalize complacency when your family is being destroyed? And again, its incorrect strategically. Ethically its deplorable.

Must I repeat myself? According to Alvor they only start arresting people after the civil war begin. So Ulfric's the one that make the ban enforced.

Sounds like he was pressured into it though, Ulfric could have given him a way out but instead killed him.
Perhaps, but it puts the argument about Torygg not know enough about Ulfric to death

Something I find strange is that people say that since Ulfric was talking about leaving the Empire in the Moot he should have said it directly and asked Torygg to secceed, but I think it is something else to that entirely. Bear in mind this is speculation, but I think it makes sense:

I think Ulfric may have been planting the seeds for his rebellion. He would already have reason to hate the Empire because of the Markarth Incident, so what is a better way to gain support than to spread seeds of his desire to free Skyrim of the Empire and let the rulers of Skyrim know about it for a long time before he do something drastic enough to make the Emperor take notice and send troops?
If my speculation makes sense the rulers of Skyrim would already have had plenty of time to make up their minds about what side in the conflict they would prefer should a Civil War erupt, and since Ulfric have had the Stormcloaks for years(Salof for one was wounded in a Stormcloak skirmish years ago) they would already have a basis for an army with a chain of command.

That wasn't the Legion that was the Thalmor. I have yet to hear that anyone's 'cousin' (stormcloak converstions) have been taken by legion, they were taken by the Thalmor. IF they could the legion would prevent it, their hands were tied with the sword at their throat when they signed the WGC if they had another other option other than hypothetically committing suicide. That Massacre was a horrible event that shouldn't have happened but it did. Same with wars, they shouldn't be fought but they are. Even good causes creates a ripple of untold damage until one views its aftermath.

Either the Imperials cannot or will not prevent the Thalmor from acting. To the Nords, they are as good as the Thalmor. This really shouldn't be a hard concept to understand. Its like seeing a man get shot, but then not doing anything after its said and done and just walking by while he dies on the sidewalk (which is a crime btw in the US, you're legally obligated to at the very least find a phone and contact authorities). And there is another option. Give up on Skyrim. Problem solved. Skyrim and its defense is no longer an Imperial problem. Skyrim doesn't need the empire, the empire very much needs Skyrim it seems. They're going about it the wrong way though. They should vacate Skyrim and allow the Nords to do what they do best.

And again, Srebrenica Massacre. Real life example. No one seems to want to touch this one. That's rather telling.

lol, such a controversial topic and yet we are outmatched by the MLP threadship. We should enlist them to help us fight the Thalmor for their number and influence is great.

I am sure Ulfric knew that Torygg was willing to listen but instead he down right challenges him to a fight because if he is gone, he has a chance at taking his power and being high king. Yes it would have been smart to actually work with Torygg, but working with him doesn't grant him the position of High King. So he kills him to be High King. Either that or is just another stubborn rebel that believes violence is the answer. Or both.

In other words so he could do whatever he wanted without being answerable to anyone. I think Ulfrics xenophobic tendencies make him a dangerous candidate for a position of absolute power.

Like I've said before, you can't be worrying about a "what if?" enemy down the road when you have a real one in your face. At the very least, a Nord empire wouldn't be trying to destroy the pillars. Furthermore, there's examples (even in Whindhelm) of Altmer no less, living successfully under Ulfric.

One of the reasons I like the stormcloaks is that Skyrim just seems more unified with a stormcloak victory if you look at the guard armour. This is something most people fail to mention I mean, take a stormcloak victory. Solitude, Windhelm, Markarth, Whiterun, Falkreath, Dawnstar, and Morthal guards are all wearing blue, While Riften is still wearing purple, and Winterhold is still wearing white. Now, take an Imperial Victory, Solitude is wearing red, Windhelm, Riften, Winterhold, and Dawnstar and wearing imperial, Markarth is wearing Green, Whiterun is wearing yellow, Falthreath is wearing Dark Blue, and Morthal is wearing Pale Green. Ever notice how the guards are almost universally wearing the same colours under Stormcloaks, but under imperials, they all seem to be lead by a different leader, which is detrimental if they want to fight off the Thalmor.

He wasn't against other races or anything. He just didnt care about them. He had bigger problems to deal with. I sympathize with Torygg because of his position. He still had the option to stand down. He chose his honor and so he is in the paradise of Sovngarde.

The WGC allows the Thalmor to legally carry out their persecution. So long as the Empire is weakened, they can't do anything about it: it's the law.

Someone responded to your Massacre parallel on a different page, if I'm not mistaken.

Honestly, I don't care much about the religious freedom and all of that crap. I don't hate Stormcloaks; I just support the Empire because I believe a Legion victory would sport a better shot at defeating the Thalmor rather than a Stormcloak victory. If the Stormcloaks were smart, they'd assault the Thalmor instead of the Empire. It's not like the Empire wants to ban worship, they just have to. If feasible, the Empire would might even assist them.

The Blue uniforms that comes to the imperial cities are in fact the Stormcloak Armys armor. The only difference between the legion armor and the stormcloak armor when it comes to that point is really that the stormcloak armor is based on the guard armor in the first place.

What I meant was that Ulf should have teamed with Thor not wanting to be High King, but to reason with Thor to try kickin' the thalmor's asses togheter. That would been epic actually.

MetalGod is right. The stormcloak victory generates the unity necessary to defeat the Thalmor.

If he didn't care about the other races, then the Dark Elves wouldn't be stuck in the Grey Quarter, and the Argonians stuck to work on the docks.
