Why is the Advanced Power Armor Grey?

Post » Fri Oct 30, 2009 11:33 pm

So the Remnant Armor (APA) a steel grey color? It's been bugging me because I could SWEAR that there was a behind the scenes of Fallout 2 stating that the APA is in fact white, and that the steel colored sprites were an accidental oversight. Anyway, this is just a question I'm dying to ask.

I sure wish I could help you, but I am still on my first Fallout 2 play through.

Is this one of those questions where you go insane if you don't have the answer? I hate those. I saw a movie once that had jim carrey in it and I could not for my life figure out who he was, for like a week...

Anyways good luck, I'll look into this.

Edit: From the wiki itself:

"As for looks in New Vegas, it is identical to its previous appearance in Fallout 2, except it has a grimier look and the goggles seem to be cracked."

I interpret this as so: it is gray due to it to appear to be a grimmer look. Meaning old or weathered and possible it was white before.

Well, when you meet Enclave troops on your video screen, you'll know what I mean, their animated heads have white armor, bu their world sprites are grey. But to my memory, the grey is a oversight. So shouldnt the armor in New Vegas be white (or offwhiite since its been unused)?

It is unused, when you first get it?

Nope, the Verti pilot wore hers before, as it was the standard uniform of troops, the tunic ones on officers are apparantly for higher ups or something.

But if you look at the picture model of the pic of Remnant Armor, there is no indication it was ever white.

Well I mean it has to be used or damaged, since the goggles are cracked. Maybe it was just made that way to match the dust and grim of the Mojave Desert?

Rust or erosion even? Or maybe they made it for role playing in a sense that if you use it a lot, since the game can't handle the scripting of making the armor weather over time, they just made it look old and used.

Possibly, also, look at the gallery, and you'll see what I mean Roughnecks. http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Advanced_power_armor_(Fallout_2)

I'm stumped. All I can say is that there really is no logical explanation. Game flaw, 40 years of sitting there alone, game designers made it that way, or they forgot, or they didn't care. Who knows.

Oh well, guess it's an oversight, I do like the way it looks though. Nice to have a throwback to the older games though.

I guess that just further makes me wonder why the APA is grey

I would say a brand new suit would have been black, however when weathered, it dulls and chips so you begin to see the grey steel, and composite ceramics natural color and environmental staining to show. I guess Grey steel it what I think of when I think weathered armor plate. :P

Lighting. Some of those shots from the FO2 intro look metallic grey too, probably due to the lighting. Or they suits only look white due to the lighting. One or the other.

Frankly, I'm very pleased to have the APA at all. It just looks so awesome.

White? When has it ever been white? All I've ever seen are gray and desert brown variants... black too if you count the sprite, which I don't.

Or maybe different colouring for different purposes? like white for guard/MPs, black for vertibird squad?

Oh ho ho, that's a pretty good assumption. I never thought of that. That might explain it. I wish a Dev would come in and comment

Between Fallout 2 and New Vegas it looks like Vertibird assault teams were equipped with the gray APA, and I assume that the brown APA was issued to Enclave forces who operate extensively on the mainland. That light brown/tan color scheme would work well as camouflage after all.

Why is the ranger trench coat grey, when on the cover it's black?

It's a fan! I'm telling you it's a fan! They got every other detail correct, some of which wasn't even shown in the in-game sprite, for it to not be a fan.

Alas... I never got one; I found the image on NMA while looking for reference photos. I'm going to guess that it was available at the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdl7pl3e7zY, or perhaps just to Black Isle Employees.
Chris Avellone or Feargus Urquhart might know.

It was definitely intended to be a radiation symbol, but I think that the fan is better personally... and it doesn't look so different from the radiation symbol on the back of the original sprite that I'd call it a big change. My only real gripe with the final product is that it's just not big enough, but considering the clipping issues on what we did get (especially for males, it's interesting how the left arm clips through the shoulder pauldron while running when the right arm doesn't) I can see why they downsized it so much.

That fan makes a mighty fine 'base of the neck' target for rifles and rockets.

My own version has no fan, and less clipping.

True, but it makes sense if you think about it. That particular model of Advanced Power Armor had a history of exploding, so a ventilation system being present fits the history behind the armor.

Indeed, I'm still waiting for the final product. :)

As to the radiation symbol vs fan.
Its a fan and it always was a fan, by evidence is the fan looks like a radiation symbol, so your pictures from fallout 2 prove absolutely nothing one way or another. We simply assumed it was a radiation symbol. Given the fact that in those days having an animated fan on the back of the armor would have been incredibly difficult to impossible the only evidence we have is the fact some of the original fallout design team worked on New Vegas.

Everyone who played Fallout 2 saw the Enclave in dark metallic armor, the off white, existed only in cut scenes and cover art. Its easier ti ignore the cut scenes and box art then the armor everyone remembers wearing on screen. Besides it looks cooler in that dark uniform color.
