Why do the beast races feel so awkward?

Post » Tue Feb 04, 2014 11:22 pm

I love the Argonians and Khajiits, they're so unique to the rest of the game but I can never have a serious playthrough as one. I think it's mainly to do with the armor, there's next to no good looking armor for either race (I use vanilla Skyrim, because I have an xbox) and also playing the role of Dovakhiin feels unnatural, one of the two races being so involved in primarily human culture just feels weird

Those tails and heads could have been better fitted, but they had to use the same body model as everyone else (which isn't that great to begin with). Argonians look like they have paper tails stapled to their backsides.

Whether you're human, elf, cat-elf or alien lizard, you'll be a freak of nature anyways. Why not go full force and play something that's actually somewhat draconic, hideous tail notwithstanding?

I pretty much play Khajiit only.

I like the Forsworn armor for light and Falmor for heavy. Basic Iron armor looks pretty good too as do the fur armors.

Yeah I think you're right,I was planning on starting a new argonian character but by the time I get to Riverwood I feel the urge to restart with a "better idea"

I've never played as either, but if I were to play as one of them, it would be Khajit, they're more BA to me. Their claws and their overall look is cooler :D

I always tend to dress Khajiit in Glass or Elven armor. Reason being is:
1. Khajiit are racially connected to the Bosmer (and can range from almost elven looking to almost pantherinae (lion, tiger, leopard & jaguar) looking.
2. Khajiit are allies to the Aldmeri Dominion so would have trade links and military trade links.

The Dreugh armor from back in Morrowind has been the only good armor for an Argonian. It suited them plus it was from an aquatic creature so should be waterproof. For Argonians since MW I tended to give them Dark Brotherhood armor (Shadowscales) or Dunmer armor (due to years of either being allies or from the sacking of Morrowind)

Thinking about it now, the Chitin armor may go well with Argonians as it has that sort of shell-like foreign look

Here's my http://i739.photobucket.com/albums/xx34/lordtru/Wu2_zps56044bae.jpg. He wears fur armor and forsworn gauntlets as it seems fitting for a cold blooded creature to wear fur in Skyrim but also I pretend that it's made from a Khajiit Mane, the neck piece being the Manes mane and the rest being his skin and other parts

this reminds me that I owe a member here his slider numbers

My gripe with the beast races is that I'd like them to look more beastly

My first character was an argonian :D
Not only for looks, but for lore purposes as well

I have always loved the argonians so technically that makes me a ebonheart lover I guess since my other favorite race is the dunmers too. Both my complete ties for favorites! I'll see if I can get my badass argonian on here

I feel that Khajiit don't look so awkward from the back, but I find their faces slightly unnerving.

Argonians look strange from the back, with a tail that seems made out of cardboard, but I do like their faces (most of the time)

Khajiit do feel slightly awkward to play as, but not so much Argonians.

I love playing a bosmer, but I was never comfortable being a non nord dovahkiin. Just didn't feel right.

I don't think the beast races really fit with Oblivion and Skyrim as well as they did in Morrowind, but I still think they're cool to have. They're one of the things that makes the Elder Scrolls games what they are.

How to avoid this feeling:

1. Load up Oblivion.

2. Create an Orc.

3. Play a while in third person. Don't forget vanity-cam.

4. Load up Skyrim, create Argonian/Khajiit, bask in the feeling that your character feels so 'natural'.

I tried the Argonian on my first playthrough and I liked it. Male Argonian, by the way. If anything, I think the Argonian actually looks the part of Dragonborn; the soul and blood of a dragon and all that. Have yet to try a Khajiit. I think I could have fun with a Khajiit character. I wouldn't do the main quest and I'd pretend he's not Dragonborn. Instead, I'd play as a simple traveler/warrior from Elsweyr. If there's any race I personally can't take seriously, it's the Orc. There's just something about the Orc that makes me feel I couldn't play through the game as one.

Damn it. Now I want to play as an Argonian again.

It's only fitting that Skyrim would make an Argonian or a Khajiit feel unnatural. Climate and culture wise, it's the total opposite of Elsweyr. The beast races look FAR better than they did in Oblivion, but there's definetely room for improvement.

Funny thing, on my first PC playthrough, I'm playing as a Khajiit. I almost always play using first person camera and next to never switch to 3rd person. First day or so of playing, something made the camera goto 3rd person, I saw my arms through the armor, and for like 10 minutes I sat there wondering why I was a vampire. Then realized I wasn't a vampire, that was fur on my arms lol. But they kind looked off color and dried up, reason I thought I was a vampire.

I like Khajiit and Argonian races very much and feel that they lend a lot to the game. I played as a Khajiit once, playing through the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild. The tail clipping and the head gear clipping about made me crazy ... it's a good thing I play mainly in first person. That kind of ruined me for playing an Argonian.

I can't speak for Khajiits because I've never been one, but I LOVE my male Argonian! He is purple/blue skinned and there are several armors he looks good in. The first is the ancient nord armor--I discovered and chased a ghost by these ruins east of Morthal. After killing him (which was hard to do because it kept running away) I discovered that he was wearing the Ancient Nord armor and helmet. It was awesome--it fits well on my Argonian. It's the only Ancient Nord Armor I've been able to find so far!

The second armor that looks great on my Argonian is the ebony armor minus the helmet. Maybe it's the purple look mixed with the black. It's visually pleasing.

I also think an Argonian makes sense as the Dragonborn.

As are Argonians.

Because they are so different from the other races and the tails I suppose. I dont play anything but Argonians so I dont get that feeling but I can see why others do.

I can never play as them for long because the tail-clipping bugs the hell out of me.

I love playing as a Khajiit. You have to think creatively about how to get into cities, though - a shame there isn't more of an in-game resistance to that.

(Makes me nostalgic for Morrowind's reputation system... wish they hadn't got rid of that!)

ha I think you've found the perfect armor for both as the fur on the Khajiit matches the fur on the Ancient Nord armor and Skyrims Glass armor looks very "Atlantean" to me, suitable for a water breathing warrior

The circlet on the Argonian looks silly though.

Not much in the way of suitable headgear for that character, though, haha. Plus, that was one of my very first characters, and that circlet is he Mage's Circlet. As you can see, he's also wearing the Impeiral Gauntlets (and boots).
