Why the devs aren't participating to discussions?

Post » Sun Jan 30, 2011 1:39 pm

I noticed that despite the big fans community and the huge amounts of discussions here about Skyrim, there is something lacking: the feedback from the developers.

I had expected a better communication between the team and the fans because there are so many discussions about Skyrim that would benefit greatly some inside explanations. Some of the dilemas or the suggestions go way off because people don't have a clue what's the team's view on a particular subject.

I know of meet the devs threads, they are a fun reading and that's all but they are not a bi-directional communication about the game.

I wouldn't want spoilers from the game. I wouldn't want the devs to take sides in disputes. I would just like to see some off the record devs contribution on the topics, personal opinions and nothing more, but related to Skyrim.

What about you, do you miss this dialogue or it's just me?

They watch the forums, I see a couple on everyday. I don't know why they don't comment though, maybe they aren't allowed. I remember J.E. Sawyer and other devs would comment every so often during the development of New Vegas, but that was a different company and a bit later in the development cycle.

If I was a dev, I think I would be afraid I'd spill the beans over something. A single slip up and you could lose one of the best jobs in the world. Besides that, you'd get your ass sued off. Definitely not worth it. Though, I was part of the Lionhead forums once upon a time and I remember quite vividly some devs participating in discussions. One actually released information about Fable II for us before release. However, I don't know what became of him... Anyway, it's probably just company policy.

They are devs. They develop. I'm assuming that's what their job is, not staring at these forums. The devs show up every now and then. But let them work in peace. and when they're off work, you'd think they'd have a family, friends even? <_<

Devs check the forums every now and then. It's not like they're on some far off island working 24/7.

And the few here aren't a large enough demographic to really affect sales....or the revenue generated by "exclussives"

DING! They're under nondisclosure agreements and can't release any game related info. Well, unless it's cleared through PR (assuming the latter)

It wasn't always this way. During Oblivion's development, there were many devs around talking about stuff in the game. *Sigh* I miss MSFD...he was a goldmine! ) I'm not sure what the timing was in relation to release, maybe interaction will increase towards the game's release.

Why? Like we're not gonna buy it if they tell us now that Werewolves are in instead of waiting a month from now?

Because anything can be cut at any time. Things change. People feel ripped off if they release info now that turns out not to be true later down the road.

Yeap, I bet they are under some pretty heavy NDAs and would be sued hard for breaking wind.

More than likely this is the case.

People wanting to walk around Skyrim day to day living some kind of normal life like Fantasy Sims probably makes them think to themselves "WTF is wrong with some of these people? It's a video game for christ's sake, not the avatar program."

I'd be creeped out too.

Seeing how crappy artists like Justin Bieber gains advantage from communicating with fans on FB and Twitter, I believe the devs could add to the hype here on their own forum. But I quess they are too busy making us a great game atm (I hope so). And BTW, great artists - like the Beth-devs shouldn't allways listen to the customers. If they did, they would just get frustrated and never finish anything.

And having watched him could well be why they don't speak up. The flurries of questions (most repeated over and over and over and over like threads here) when he popped up. The ambushes. Hell, there were two guys who all but stalked Sawyer- one repeatedly asking could his character get an eyepatch, and the other demanding to know if the Thompson submachine gun was in the game. If I were a developer, you couldn't drag me into this crowd. :D

They pop in every once in awhile to clear up misconceptions. Like when it was confirmed that dual wielding shields will most definitely not be in. It would be nice if they dedicated a bit more time to it, but I'm not holding my breath.

A lot can be said about Halo and Bungie, but their forums are really good when it comes to player/dev interaction.

Wait, they cleared up a misconception that dual wielding shields was in or wasn't in?

Edit: Nice. We have two DEVS looking this thread over now. :ermm:
