Why the HATE for Athletics, Acrobatics

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 7:59 am

No, thats not the same thing at all.

yeah it is... it's all about getting around. If there was no moon jumping in oblivion, then ledges that are seeminlgy possible to reach, wouldn't be reachable (which would make me mad). Moon jumping compensates for that. If there was ledge climbing, we don't need moon jumping.

They never did. Once you got yer 100 Speed, Athletics, and Acrobatics, a Nord ran and jumped like the best Bosmer.

They ran faster actually, because height was a factor in run speed.

Hence anyone can become anything in TES. Which will most likley still be in Skyrim. An Orc Mage, a Breton Tank etc.

Why do people assume there will be a perk for speed? It's been confirmed for months now that perks are based off skills...

And they took out Acrobatics and Athletics...

So where does that "perk" fall into?

They said that Birthsigns were converted into the perk system. The whole stars and what not. There happens to be a constilation of a horse, so it isn't to far a of a stretch to think that there will be a constilation that deals with stamina, speed, and carrying weight.

Huh, that's new to me. You wouldn't happen to have a source handy for my reading pleasure, would you? :icecream:

The word acrobat doesn't work to the argument as it doesn't say it have to be a skill, it's a word to describe someone that can do amazing physical feats. It's just a word. That aside that wasn't the main point, the main point was the feats that were unrealistic, which wasn't proven. He jumped down off a cliff because there was nowhere else to go, that's far from a feat that is constantly done by skilled acrobats, it was his only way out and he managed not to get killed. As for the jumping across the trees and jumping into the water from the cliff, those weren't normal people you can play, they were beastly Khajiiti creatures. They can climb and tree with their claws and jump from limb to limb with their nimbleness of a cat. I mean, they were confused for werewolves, so obviously they were fearsomely strong and agile. These are hardly evidence that anyone can do amazing things like jumping really high or running really fast, this is just evidence that a guy had to jump off a cliff and survived a hundred foot fall and that beastly Khajiit can climb trees and that the word "acrobat" exists in Tamriel.

Well, Ive seen you declare canon not canon, Ive seen you argue removed skills werent and now youre saying that acrobatics isnt acrobatics.
As long as you push your point across you seem willing to warp everything.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Realizations_of_Acrobacy

It is an undeniable fact that superhuman feats of acrobatics and athletics are a part of the canon of TES.
Unless of course you argue that acrobatics isnt acrobatics. But why stop there? Lets declare Tamriel not Tamriel.
After all, only a few unreliable sources have ever named it thus. I hereby put forward that it is in fact lower Kensington, England.

LOL, no its not. What does jumping or dodging an enemy have to do with ledges? Or jumping from roof to roof? Obviously 'jumping to ledges' couldn't replace the variety that acrobatic abilities have. Just because you didnt play that way or this way, didnt mean we didnt.

Basically all Im hearing is, "I didnt play X way, so I dont want it in for anybody".

My post bumped Meraris great post back, so I want to repost it:

Two of my favorite characters, right there.

'Course, in the past, part of the fun of playing them was overcoming the natural obstacles....

I never said there shouldn't be dodging... very likely that could be a stealth perk.

and jumping from roof to roof... it would. if you jump "realistically" from one roof to the next, then you'd be able to grab on to the ledge of the roof you are jumping too and pull yourself up instead. It'd still be just as possible.

Now sliegn, are you done shooting down things just to shoot them down....you asked for examples in lore, I gave you Ida Vlinorman, 4 books and Merari gave you anothe instance, this isnt about winning, its wiping away the notion Acrobatics and athletics are just gameplay terms and dont exist in the universe....

Basically all I'm hearing is "I like the way this was, so i don't think it can be changed for the better"

and yeah... i played with moon-jumps (hard not to), i utilized it too to the fullest extent. I just think it can be better.

going back to that one... alright. There's a reason i put realistically in quotes (realistically, by earths standards)... obviously you just wanted to use your favorite expression :facepalm:

And all these statements are false. I've declared things that aren't canon to not be canon because they are in the "obscure texts" section that explicitly says on their own site that it's not actual lore...

I said removed skills weren't needed, such as swimming or languages and now I'm saying that the lore didn't say acrobatics was a skill because the lore doesn't outline skills that must be in a game, not sure why you guys always go off in some wild tangent and seeing me say things that I never said. Gets old hearing you claim I did something when I in no way did.

OT, no skill has the right to stay just because it was in a previous game. Keeping features just because they existed before even if it there is a better way to do it isn't the right way to do it.

Some people don't want quality over quantity. They just want more, and they never want anything cut or changed, regardless of how well it worked or was implemented. And they equate this to being complex or adding complexity, when really it's just adding mediocrity.

Removing somthing that is lore friendly is not change for the better.

Sleigh reminds me of Hooper from Jaws, what did Qiunt say?

Hooper: Quint, that doesn't prove a damn thing!

Quint: Well it proves one thing, Mr. Hooper. It proves that you wealthy college boys don't have the education enough to admit when you're wrong.

and yet people are salivating furciously at the idea of 280 perks, calling it complex and game changing when FO3's and NV's was filled with +5's, Beth developed one of them directly. when did 280 perks automatically = Quality, and Skills by which if made to matter, and did originally, just needed some fixing, didnt.

It does if the thing being removed is completely useless and the same thing can be accomplished with an easier "Interface" if you will.

We are talking about removal of that ability, not removal of the skill. The ability was far from useless.

The ability will likely still be there in the form of perks.. And if it isn't I can't think of a single thing more useless than athletics and acrobatics in the game so TO ME it doesn't matter anyway.

That's better LOL. We are here defending the ability itself, not exactly the removal of the skills. Or at least thats what the thread has turned into.

Lore =/= Game mechanics
Lore = History
Otherwise, we'd still have a "walk through walls" spell. (even if this spell was in factual written history, they got rid of it, and it's for the better)

I got some studying to do, and we are going in circles... no need for this. I'm just gonna wait till we see how high we can jump before discussing this further.

Lore = History

So then you admit that it is realistic for Nirn.

On Topic: Lets discuss improving them. Id like all of the abilities given to you by skill perks in Oblivion through perks in Stamina. I want overall speed to be related to perks. The speed would have a 'max speed at sprint' since at least for the 360, walking/running is context sensitive. Not sure how that works on PC. Id like the added ability to catch a ledge like Liu said, but without implementing Earth limitations. What about you guys? obviously there is a problem with how they level for Vanilla Oblivion players and since I sympathize with all play types, I think they should level independently from how other 'skills level.

The reasons these arguments are circular is because one side is like "my thought proccess is completely unfallible and backed up by Todd, everything you bring up I will find away to shoot down or not give recognition" I swear its like that every time, atleast I recognize the benefits of what your shooting for or insinuating doesn't mean I like it or that its a good thing, and Im giving points but its like Im a flaming idiot who doesn't know what he's talking about, and despite the fact that both sides are of opinions, mine is a lesser opinion, really?

god these threads, I MEAN I HAVE YOU AS A FRIEND SLEIGN, WHY SO MEAN TO ME...........YOUR NOT ON MY FRIENDS LIST FOR SHIX AND GIGGLES>...

and I cannot for the life of me understand why people rather cut things up throw them out, fold them and pretend they were better than ever, instead of fixing the flaws, expanding on it, making it matter and polishing it...........

What, moon-jumping? just because it was in a book, doesn't make it history... if that's what you mean. otherwise, Professor Lindenbock and crew would of have had to traveled to the center of the Earth in the 19th century.
