Why the removal of mysticism?

Post » Thu Oct 14, 2010 12:43 am

I have a hard time understanding why Bethesda has removed mysticism from Skyrim altogether. Especially when they have an in-game book entitled 'Mysticism'. It just makes very little sense to me. Did the school of Mysticism just completely die out in the 200 years since Oblivion? Also, I would imagine that we will still have the ability to soul trap and detect creatures etc. so what school of magic will these be put into?

And if my information is wrong and there is indeed still a school of mysticism please forgive me as I have read it a few places on the internet and am just kind of hoping it is not true.

I am pretty sure every spell in Mysticism was moved to another school. According to Todd, it was remove for being a little redundant. But don't worry, I doubt they would take out spells like Detect and Soul Trap.

I'm glad they did, and honestly how many spells were there in that school ??!! 2 useful ones that are reflect and absorb.....

anyway since we are having 85 new spell effects I'm sure we won't miss it.

its just naming after all, and besides I hope they got inspired by dark messiah spell effects, freezing enemies and throwing barrels using telekinesis would be awesome.

Mysticism is something better put into lore than gameplay. Lore says that magic is unpredictable, powerful, and dangerous, and the school of mysticism is more an art than a science - yet gameplay says that magic is predictable, sometimes can fail sometimes can't, but you'll never be surprised, even in the school of mysticism everything works as expected. That don't fly with lore, so not having the school is better than having a shadow of what it is meant to be.

I was under the impression that they reallocated the spells into the other schools. I am a little disappointed too, but I think it will be fine.

edit: Silvade beat me to it. :ninja:

I find it annoying. Mysticism was as much part of the lore as anything was.
Not going to whine over it, but I will miss it.

thats just what I think I know I never used it, except with playing around with telekinesis, and the reflect damage/spell for some of my enchants and I never really bothered trapping spells, I just used sigal stones

I guess it was used more in Morrowind. In Morrowind all the teleport spells was mysticism. I know I used mysticism more in Morrowind, probably the school I used the most.

Soul trap, telekinesis.

And detect life. I was a fervent user of telekinesis also. It was actually one of my favourite schools.

I have loved mysticism since Daggerfall, but I don't mind seeing it go. It has been badly handled in all three games it appeared in, such that I think it breaks the magic system by being the catch-all crapshoot of spells. If they send the spells to the appropriate schools and do a better job of defining the schools of magic, it will be a better system. I think that's what they're trying.

I'm sort of wondering why Enchanting isn't just called Necromancy. You're clearly manipulating souls to make these enchantments, in the same manner a necromancer would. Is going the next step to enchant a body with a soul to make it a zombie such a leap? No, not really.

Soul trap.
Soul trap will be part of enchanting, since you manipulate souls with that skill.

Same here. That's another thing I'm hoping for..............please oh please bring back mark and recall. And since there isn't mysticism I think mark and recall could easily fit into alteration.

Lore wise I liked mysticism.

I shall miss it, it belongs in a proper study of magic.

After they removed or reassigned half of the spells in the school between MW and OB (Mark/Recall, Intervention, Absorb Health), it became a nearly useless thing to take, unless you were into recharging enchanted items a lot. Just like Spears and Medium Armor in MW, after they short-changed them in the one game, they removed them in the next game "because nobody used them". Instead of fixing the ache, they amputated the limb. Less < More.

I don't mind them consolidating Enchanting and Mysticism, because a lot of the functions are closely related, but removing Mysticism in name contradicts the existing lore and literature. Of course, after "dumbing down" Enchanting in OB to the point where any barbarian could enchant things just as well with a Sigil Stone as any skilled enchanter, it wouldn't have been a great surprise if they removed the Enchanting skill altogether, "because noboy used it".

I think it was the best choice of a spell school to remove. To me, while a few things fit well, it seemed to be mostly filled with whatever they couldn't fit easily anywhere else, and then some stuff moved from where it should be to fill in blank holes.

the most interesting and mysterious of the magic branches, i assume it was removed to "simplify" magic and make it "less complicated"

thats [censored] in my opinion but im just 1 person :sadvaultboy:
