Why the Star Wars Prequels were bad

Post » Fri Dec 12, 2014 5:28 pm

So I came across a set of videos made by RedLetterMedia on Youtube that do a fantastic job of explaining WHY the prequels dont live up to the originals. I know this is a controversial topic but one that is interesting to discuss.

RLM takes a in depth look of the prequels and with using a mixture of comedy (very demented at times but still funny) and cinema philosophy, breaks down why the prequels were not good.

These are a bit lengthy but if you are interested in this topic then it is well worth watching.

As someone who saw the original trilogy in the theater on original release, I don't really need anyone else to tell me why the prequels were horrible.

Thanks for sharing though.

For me personally, since queuing to see Star Wars in 1977 as a 10 years old, then the other films and all the games media up to the prequel's, it was Darth Vadar for me,

That was not the Darth Vadar i expected, none of the other issues really bothered me, he was suppose to be this scary uber master of the force who hunted all the jedi down, but ended up with a lovesick whiner who got his ass kicked who killed no Jedi except the kids, and having him originally build C3PO was gimmicky to me,

At the end of the third film i was left feeling why anyone would hide from him, he should of beaten Kenobi not the other way round and the rest should of fled in fear, i have no desire to watch the prequels again after seeing them, this is my personal reason's anyway, but each to their own

I completely agree. Also Yoda should have NEVER used the lightsaber.

It's easy to explain why the prequels were bad: George Lucas mistakenly thought CGI was a replacement for decent writing and acting.

Ah the famous Pizza Roll reviews, I'll watch these every year and even though they're not official reviews they damn sure nail it as to why the prequels are failures not only as Star Wars films but as films period. The first film had no main character although I'm pointing at Qui Gon, the second film had the most condeluded romance ever and the third film was a little better but Anakin got more tricked to joining the Dark Side rather then being seduced by it. If Abrams does a good job with these new SW films I hope Disney writes off the prequels and redo them, who knows maybe Abrams can come up with something better.

Wow, who makes reviews that are longer than half of the movie they're reviewing? Seriously? They must either be super-discussing each point, over-elaborating, being super nitpicky, repeating themselves or all of the previously mentioned things.

I don't think that the prequels were great movies, but I did enjoy them when I watched them on the big screen. And if someone were to say "Hey, you wanna watch revenge of the sith?" I wouldn't say "no no nononono, please god, hell no, [censored] no!" I would probably be ok with it. Then again I'm not the type of guy that holds on to grudges, the star wars prequels are old by now and everyone knows their mediocre standard, and as movies they are ok, but compared to the otherwise awesome star wars movies, they become weak in comparison.

I think there were tons of things that were good about the prequels, the fights were cooler and faster, the casting was great, don't get me wrong, the acting was far from excelent, but they brought in some good actors for the job, I don't blame the actors for the movie they were in, they've all proven themselves to be capable enough in other movies. Ewan McGregor was perfect as Obi Wan Kenobi and so on. Seeing more planets was cool and so on and so forth.

Obviously there are bad things in it, the story was meh, the acting was meh, Jar Jar Binks happened, but my main problem was that they tried to explain everything down to detail, midiclorians, clone troopers (like I have no problem with the consept but all the detail and Jango Fett, come on), Boba Fett is one of my favourite characters so I liked Jango and all, but he was kinda used to throw a bone to the Boba Fett fans and that's it. So I would have left him out.

So if they had stuck to making a good origin story, it could have been great, but they had to mix in all sorts of stuff too, in an attempt to make the fan of every single character in the originals happy, except Solo fans, and they never explained how those met.

As far as Yoda with a lightsaber, I thought it was awesome.

In fact the Nostalgia Critic has a list of 11 good things from the prequels, worth a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buXz4BYS8kw

So yeah, I'm down with a balanced discussion of the prequels, but I won't bash them because they weren't as bad as everyone claims, I feel like people on the internet get pulled to these polar extremes when it comes to opinion either something is awesome or it svcks, but that is rarely the case.

As I said, they're not great movies, but they're not downright terrible, I'll watch them, I won't be the guy that shows up half-way through the star wars marathon because I didn't want to watch the prequels. Just like the Hobbit movies don't live up to the Lord of The Rings (in this case because someone had to milk the cash cow), the prequels don't live up to the originals. But they're still alright to watch. Though I prefer the hobbit to the prequels. Haven't seen the battle of five armies though I heard it's pretty good.

He didn't even mention the plot idiocy that bothered me when I first saw The Phantom Menace. Jinn takes Binks along with them because they need Binks' help to navigate through the planet core. But once inside the ship he never once asks Binks for directions and even neck-pinches Binks to shut him up. If they can find their way through the planet core without Binks (which they do easily) why was it important to bring Binks along?

So I actually just finished up the 9th video of the Attack of the Clones Review and I have never noticed how much was ripped off from other movies. It's mind boggling! Whats crazy is he ripped off A LOT from Empire Strikes Back.
