why do the weapons weigh soooo much?

Post » Sat Dec 05, 2015 9:39 am

i searched couldnt find so sorry if already topic

but why are the guns so unbelievably heavy?

my combat shotgun weighs 22.7lbs (could remember that one lol)

combat rifle 20+lbs

hunting rifle 20+lbs

thats insane?

my real life (yeah i know but still its an important comparison) colt m16A1 rifle weighs 6.5lbs,

river rock arms m4a4 which being a cheaper brand is alot heavier than normal with a carry handle attachment (its flat top) and all sorts of dumb [censored] hanging off it like quad rail, red dot scope, laser, torch, forward grip, suppressor, batteries etc in which i would never shoot this way is still under 10lbs

zastava m2010 Ak in 308win weighs 8.6lbs

mossberg model 80 12 gauge weighs 6lbs (yeah not a combat shotgun but...)

ruger mini 14 weighs 6.6lbs

the 10mm pistol i have in game weighs more than my colt m16A1, ruger mini 14, my 12 guage shotgun and my 308 ak only weighs 1lb more!

those are some that i own and some other comparisons such as real combat shotguns

h&k CAWS weighs 8.2lbs empty (9.5lbs loaded)

AA-12 which is an incredibly heavy beast still only weighs 11.5lbs , CQB version weighs 10.5lbs

some very very heavy combat rifles from our world

FN FAL 9.8lbs, para version will be slightly lighter

G3 9lbs

m14 9.1lbs

these figures are empty add +1lbs for 20 round mag of 308

so even the heaviest are half the weight of the in game ones?

was wondering why?

and no, power armour is not the answer as not every soldier had power armour also then theres the police/national guard/BADFTL agents/ SWAT/rangers/ even civvies who if could get combat armour with licence surely could own assault/combat rifles with said licence? and then for the hunting rifle say farmers/hunters etc wouldnt want to lug around a 20+lb fire arm surely?

weight in battle would be as much of an issue to the fallout world as it is in ours so yes despite the parallel universe thing they are still normal human beings and therefor come to the same requirements as in our world such as weight for soldiers, if weapons weigh less not only maneoverability and quicker picture aquisition of the fire arms, they can carry alot more ammo. for example the m14 weighs 9.1lbs compared to the fallout 4 combat rifle which is over 20lbs that is 200 more rounds our world soldier can carry vs their world soldier?

i cant see it as a game balance thing, purely as theres not many different weapons anyway and really who cares if they weighed less like fallout3/NV figures that i could carry more cans and stuff out of dungeon? and would it be game breaking in any way what so ever if i were to carry more weapons??? (more off each obviously wouldnt change anything)

is it just bethesda's obsession in making every weapon/armour get waaaay more heavier as it gets better? like oblivion/skyrim?

not a whinge just an ask :)

Nope, it's in pounds, you'll confirm this when you pick up a 10lb weight in game, and see it has a value of 10 weight.

And I agree, the weapons are ridiculously heavy. FYI, the weapons weights your listing are when they're unloaded, loaded, especially the 7.62 weapons, they gain a considerable amount of weight, but even then the weapons in this game are ridiculous. They're not too far off however from they're realistic weights.

For some reason, a line from the MST3K theme song seems appropriate.

But frankly, if you have a problem with item weights, then I'm interested in hearing how you explain toting 200+ lbs. of gear around as a matter of course.

Think of it as the pure encumbrance of the item, not just the weight.

Yeah, I don't think they've ever tried to accurately represent the realistic weight of items in Bethesda games.

I'd say its just a means of balance, making you think about how far you can go with what you can carry or how far you can modify a weapon. All things that need to be considered if you want to manage your weight efficiently. Such and such.

Well. Everyone has always assumed it was pounds since Morrowind, despite Beth making it clear that the weight system does not match any specific value in game after game. Assume 1 "weight" is 100 grams and it all makes sense.

It's in pounds, the few weapons that do have some semblance in the real world match their real world counter parts. The SMG for example weighs relatively similar to what a fully loaded thompson with a 50 round drum mag would weigh.

I hate when my portable nuclear bomb launcher weighs so much.

Vault Dweller Problems. That should be a hashtag or something.

The SLR (Australian variant of the FNFAL) weighed just on 10lbs loaded with 20 rounds. It was a 7.62.

The SLR holds 20 rounds, not 30, unless you're talking about some ungodly magazine that was only ever mounted on it by junkies.

are they modded? most mods add weight, aside from a couple designed to reduce weight.

Can you also carry around 250 pounds of gear with you in real life? :P

Gameplay balance would likely be the answer. I'm sure there's also a disclaimer somewhere in the game that states guns may not be equal to real world counterparts.

This is the truth. In Morrowind we had Warhammers weighing 96 pounds and a Katana that weighed 54 pounds, among many others. In Oblivion we had Battle Axes that weighed 76 pounds and (again) Warhammers that weighed 93 pounds. I often wonder if Bethesda developers ever leave their offices and go outside into the real world.

Why do they weigh so much? Because IRL they DO. I own a .45 pistol, a colt 1911. It's a "heavy" pistol in more ways than one. I haven't actually weighed it on a scale, but it's got heft. The slide alone probably weighs 1 1/? lbs. The thing's heavy enough that if you don't use a proper "weaver" grip/stance, your arm can get tired just aiming it, never mind firing.

The 10mm appears to be quite a bit bigger than my gun- I could imagine it weighing a ton.

Yeah.

In game, I am running around with a combat shotgun, a semi-automatic pistol, assault rifle, gauss rifle , lazer rifle, .50 cal Anti-Mat rifle, a plasma rifle and about 8000 rounds of ammunition.

in real life, I wouldn't be able to juggle those weapons even if they didn't weigh anything. Additionally, the 400 rounds of .50 cal ammo I am carrying would drive me to my knees in real life, let alone the rest of the ammo.

If you want real life, then at most we should be limited to two long arms and a pistol and we should not be able to carry more than 80 pounds without suffering some serious problems, We should certainly not be able to carry and entire depot worth of ammo.

Yes, but that's what jjleon also said. You cannot complain about the "unrealistic" weight of some weapons and accept the "unrealistic" carrying capacity. It is pure gameplay balance. Same in the TES games, a historical onehanded sword weights 800 g to 1,5 kg (about two to 3 and a half pounds, pls USA, change to the SI system ;) ) but in Skyrim it is 14 units or so for the weaker ones.

I hope for a realism mod with realistic weights (also for ammo) and carrying capacity; no longer can you carry the Fatman, gauss rifle, shotgun, sniper, laser, plasma and combat rifle in your pants pockets at once. Would be true hardcoe, wouldn't it?

But I want lightweight guns so I can carry more junk. I'm hauling Luke 80lbs of 3 guns and they should be like 30 altogether. That's an extra 50lbs of crap I can't carry because stupid guns are so heavy :(

Then take the mule perk and invest in strength. If everything would be easy we would be bored even faster. ;) Or wait for a mod that changes weights.

it's not realistic, it just about balancing carrying weight, it svcks, but sometimes you have to give up realism for game balance, but I'm sure a mod will fix it.

"...but I'm sure a mod will fix it"

now that's quotable.

I assume the extra weight is the ammo. An empty shotgun might weigh 7 lbs, but a shotgun with a 20 round 12-gauge clip fully loaded will weigh a lot more. So I guess the exaggerated weapon weight makes up for the weightless ammo you're carrying.

This time around the game has some junk items for comparison, you have 80 lb weight (labeled such by the name and graphic) which weights 80 units. Same for 5, 10 and 20 and for few others. They weight exactly the amount their name claims them to weight in lb. That is to say, in this game the game itself confirms the unit is 1 lb.
