why is the wii u deemed a failure?

Post » Fri May 08, 2015 3:51 pm

have very recently bought a wii u console, and think it's great. it has some great games, the controller is great imho, and it is also cheaper than both xbox one and ps4 (over £120-30 cheaper in uk).

so why do i read about it being a big failure all over the internet? is it down to how many nintendo sell compared to the competition, something else,or all of the above?

i actually wanted to get a wii u over an xbox one/ps4 to be honest,as it is different.

what do you think?

at present i only have 5 games for it so far :- windwaker hd, super mario 3d world, mario kart 8, trine 2 director's cut,and mario and luigi at the 2014 sochi winter games (have yet to play that, due to not having a wiimote/nunchuck controller).

Most people thought, "Why do we need the Wii U when we already have the Wii ?"

But now that the Wii U is actually getting some good games I suspect it might start doing better.

Nintendo been losing money on it. Can't be much more of a failure than that.

However, it starts to look up a bit, earlier this week Nintendo announced their first annual profit for the first time in four years.

The GameCube didn't sell that well either, but eventually sold about 20 million. It seems unlikely that the Wii U will reach that number, as it only sold 9.5 million so far (and they expect to sell another 3.5 million the next year) and Nintendo already said they will release the Nintendo NX next year (whatever it may be). And in the meantime Sony announced they sold over 22 million PS4s already.

Anyway, there are 3 Wii U games I want to play. Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade Chronicles X and the Wii U Zelda game. So when those 3 games are released and available for purchase, I will probably buy a Wii U.

On the system, or on the entire product line? I know Sony took a loss on each PS3 sold for a while, but more than made up for it with the games. Is Nintendo able to do that as well, or are sales too low for that as well?

Already told my wife that when Animal Crossing comes out I'm going to buy the WiiU just to play that game.

Sony had didn't have any problems selling the PS1, PS2 and PS3 with a loss (and neither did Microsoft with their consoles) because they are quite large and have a lot of business units so if the game unit it was not much of a big deal (it is now though, the Sony game unit is now one of their more profitable units and the rest of Sony aren't as strong as they used to be). Nintendo just work with games, if their game unit go with a loss, it's much more serious cause it's their only unit.

When Nintendo started to sell the 3DS at loss after a big price drop back in 2011 it was the first time they ever did that, and something they were forced to do to increase the userbase cause it had sold so very poorly since the launch. Which is a bit odd thinking about now, considering they sold 52 million 3DS handhelds now.

It's a good thing Nintendo made extremely much money during their DS and Wii years, cause as I said earlier, in the past 4 years only the last one been a year with a profit. And things are looking up for them now, so yay for that.

For gamers, the most important difference between the Xbox One, Wii U, and PlayStation 4 is the games.

Sure, they have differences in CPU and GPU power, but none of that matters unless it’s used to fuel awesome gaming experiences.

I thing some of the best games for the Wii U:

Spoiler

Super Mario 3D World

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

New Super Mario Bros. U

Nintendo land

Rayman Legends

Bayonetta 2

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition

Skylanders Swap Force

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut

Mario Kart 8

Mario Kart 8 DLC Pack 1

Shovel Knight

Pikmin 3

Need for Speed: Most Wanted U

Bayonetta

Mass Effect 3: Special Edition

Assassin's Creed III

NBA 2K13

Darksiders II

Batman: Arkham City - Armored Edition

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse

Trine 2: Director's Cut

Child of Light

Mutant Mudds Delux

Bit.Trip Presents...Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien

The lego Movie videogame

Little Inferno

The wonderful 101

ZombiU

I solely blame the name. WiiU is a terrible name since it just sounds like an upgrade for the Wii or something. Even I thought that when I first heard about it and I′ve been gaming since the NES. Still thought it was just an upgrade for the Wii up until last year or so when I really dug into it, no joke.

A good name is crucial when selling a new console, especially if it′s gonna replace another one. Btw that is why I hate the name for the new Xbox. I thought the first Xbox was the One...

New Leaf is amazing, I'm patiently waiting for the U version of AC!

And obviously because not enough gritty first person shooters that seems to populate the other consoles library!

The name was wrong. Since it's the second Wii console, it was supposed to be called the Nintendo Wii Wii.

I say they should have done what they did back in the day. We had the Nintendo and then came the Super Nintendo, they should have called it the Super Wii :D

Yeah, the name is stupid. A lot thought it was just a special controller for the original Wii.

The 3DS was the same, a lot of people thought it was a normal DS with a 3D gimmick. Including gamers, I know of people on this forum who thought this as well.

So both the Wii U and the 3DS had absolutely terrible names.

The largest point of failure for the Wii U stems from the name itself, imho. It left many buyers scratching their heads at the thing. Another thing that didn't help were the games released for it on launch day. You need powerful, top quality games to get that console out the door.

I wouldn't deem the Wii U a failure, but it isn't one of Nintendo's best consoles. The biggest flop for Nintendo is the Virtual Boy.

How about Perfect Wii or P Wii for short?

Anyway, the only game on it that I'm interested in is Fatal Frame 5 but would much rather it was ported to PC - along with games 1-4.

Wii U's name I agree with, it is a bad name and confusing to people that are not familiar with the gaming community. I thought the 3DS was a good name, but the New 3DS was a pretty bad one IMO. I mean, ya there is going to be exclusives to take advantage of the better hardware but they really blew the chance to call it something like "Super Nintendo 3DS" (Someone on Reddit had the same idea too).

As for the Wii U's success...well, it seems to be improving. I thought it was strange to have a successor already to the Wii, which I think was Nintendo's best selling console in a long time. But, I am happy with the Wii I have and the 3DS I got, I don't need a Wii on steroids! :P

Well compare it to when the original Wii came out. They were in such high demand, that the city i live in (about 1.2million people) it was impossible to get a Wii at any given store that sells them (best buy, walmart, etc) for 3-4 years. You would have to order one a week in advance, or come in on the shipping day and HOPE you got one.

This new one, i havent even heard of anyone i know who's even bought one. Not to mention the name, Wii-U. When i first heard of them, and im someone who at least plays video games pretty regularly, so you'd think i might know a thing or two about the new generation of consoles, but yeah when i first heard the name i thought it was just like a new edition of the Wii, not an actual new generation of consoles.

Whoever is their english translator and marketer is really screwing up on the marketing in my opinion. Names like Wii-U and New 3DS is not good for systems that are essentially new generations of system, rather than new editions like many think they are (like the Ps3 slim for example is just a normal ps3 but with a bigger hard drive and looks slightly different, that's what most people think your console is when it's named the Wii-U over the Wii, or the New 3DS over the 3DS).

Not only that but a character from Kung-Pow: Enter the Fist also says WeeU .

Still I like the my Wii U and have no regrets buying it and now its awesome that AVGN Adventures is on it, plus I like playing it while I watch TV at the same time, it's the only reason I bought one :D.

Yeah, I think the name was pretty dumb too. It makes it sound like some kind of system for little kids.

One contributing Factor is Nintendo's lack of sipport for allowing any "Unsanctioned" footage of the WiiU's games be released. Instead, uploaders must enter a special agreement where Nintendo takes a certain percentage of the video's revenue. This is why there are few WiiU games on YouTube, and lack of views = lack of interest because of lack of appeal. One cannot play a game without knowing it exists, let alone seeing some real, unscrpited footage outside of exclusive Press releases.

Not only the games, the console also. Everyone hears about the New Playstation or newest Xbox, but the Wii U seems like some kind of after thought as far as the public is concerned.

This is so true. My interest in Fallout 3 started with my then favourite let′s player when he began to play it. I thought it would be a boring game with an empty world and everything completely destroyed. Well, thanks to his videos I got hooked immediately when I saw what the game was like and now I have the original edition as well as the CE. Not to mention my gaming hours which are over 500, and counting

Some ideas companies have are effectively only hurting themselves.
