Why there aren't any spears

Post » Sat Oct 23, 2010 6:36 pm

Why are there no spears?: Because Todd wants what he likes and he don't give a rat's ass about the fans. He want's Skyrim to be his way.

If Bethesda did everything the fans said, the game would be much, much worse. Face it.

And why does everyone think Todd has control over every little aspect in the discussions within Bethesda? He seems like a placeholder for people to vent at.

Because the other Arc of people seem to think he has control over every little aspect in Bethesda, and that he's responsible for -everything-

Actually they had both types, thrown and stabbing. The stabbing ones were in the Sierra Madre DLC. Not to mention a spear thats just thrown is still a spear. Why do you always try to argue with me? I always prove you wrong.

I could be mistaken, but I don't recall them actually stabbing with those spears. I seem to recall them swinging them like a halberd or glaive, rather than thrusting.

You mentioned how they're near useless close quarters, I agree, that should be in the game, but I don't know how could it be made to work in a first-person game that you can't stab/slash somebody who's really right next to you, not to mention, how would you make it clear with the player when is he in reach.
Just thinking this over made me think of a really uncomfortable system, ironing these out would take way too much time and resources, they could be spending on something else...

Their close quarter animation would be similar to shield bash, pushing the enemy back some distance while dealing little to no damage. Allow the players to run backwards faster with the spear equipped than any other weapon would further help the player keep their distance. As for judging distance, that's a very minor learning curve than most fps players do naturally anyway. :gun:

Depends on the moves you have. There was a thrust melee move (had to be learned), therefore you could thrust with a spear.

Regardless of whether or not only a niche of players would use spears, wouldn't their mere presence in the game world and use by NPCs simply add more to the atmosphere? There's really no good excuse. There's been enough clamor over their omission to prove that it's a significant flaw in the game, especially considering their place in the lore.

No they didn't, you couldn't stab with them, just throw them.

Why does everybody bring up the freaking animations? Of course it's relatively easy to do, that's not the problem.

You mentioned how they're near useless close quarters, I agree, that should be in the game, but I don't know how could it be made to work in a first-person game that you can't stab/slash somebody who's really right next to you, not to mention, how would you make it clear with the player when is he in reach.

Hammers and axes are on poles as well you know, and TES has both. They have a range max and a range min just like spears. The fix? Bethesda just ignores it. Even massive hammers are just as effective at point blank as they are at 3 feet. Just do the same thing for a spear.

And there is already a thrusting move for claymores and swords, it wouldn't be a stretch to just modify and use it for spears. Hell even hammers have a thrusting animation which doesn't even make sense. (Not to mention that, if you look at the hammer thrusting animation, it would be perfect for a spear right out of the box.)

So...

1. Animations - no big deal. They already have most of them, and it would be easy to tweak or crank out a couple more. Non issue.

2. Balance - no big deal. The spears could be balanced for damage and range just like any claymore or war hammer.

3. Fighting style - no big deal. The spears could be swung or thrusted just like we swing the axes and just like we thrust the hammers. You can block and bash just like a staff.

NV had spears, they worked fine.

You swung them around, no stabbing to be had.

In the bottom center image the PC is drawing a claymore off his back. There's an enemy in that picture, it looks like some sort of undead zombie or skeleton. Check out how that enemy is holding its weapon. The weapon is a club-like thing.

Telling me it would be so hard to move from that to a spear? In fact, that weapon almost looks like it's some kind of javelin already.

I don't buy it.

I believe the words were that "Spears in the traditional sense" are out. What is the traditional sense? short thrusting weapons coupled with shields, or long two handed thrusting/slashing weapons? The wording is awkward, and I won't be surprised to see spears work their way into the game in some form or another. Maybe even as polearms :P

It isn't hard. All you need is a bubble for a "hit zone" with only the outer edge being effective. Pretty much how real spears work. I can draw diagrams, but it will take me a while, and I will only bother if people actually want to see it. The player would have to eyeball it, just like you have to with real weapons. Or yanno. You can add some sort of stupid "you can hit it now!!!!!1!" indicator around the crosshair...

Because the most essential, widely used weapon in history is superfluous. And because Beth is too lazy to implement.

A bunch of people have made very good points on the spear matter and why they should be included in the game. Somebody should get a dev over here and show them the logic of the fans!

Actually there was a stab move. Not to mention that it wouldnt even matter. Spears were in NV, they could be implemented into Skyrim.

Thing is, that would be incredibly annoying to fight that way then, as it would be really annoying just to find the sweet spot where you can hit the enemy.

Uh, no they're not the same. Spears have a bigger reach than any those.

If you look at dark messiahs staffs it would be awesome if you could use mage staffs like that, or even just a combat staff weapon, but yeah, proper spears wouldn't be fun to fight with, there's a different between a staff and a spear.

You could still use the "hits at any distance" approach and balance the damage out by making it less effective to swing to the side than it is to stab. It worked that way in Morrowind, and it wasn't bad, it just needed tweaking.

There won't be any spears for the same reason there are no attributes, no birthsigns, no levitation, no true separation of armor pieces, no spell crafting, no crossbows... because BGS is a company where the bottom line is what takes priority over everything else. This is the same reason why you see a "simplification" of the whole system. Turns out what makes these games sell is not atmosphere, story, writting, exploration, a.i., or lore. What is marketable to the COD/Halo/God of War/Wii sports crowds is simplicity, straight forward, hand holding gameplay.

This is the reason why in Oblivion there were less skills, the deeper writing was scraqed for 5 voice actors, less spells, less weapons, less unique items/unique dungeons, horse armor, quest arrow etc. This is what is most profitable, and believe it or not the community on BGS forums is a small blip in the vastness of potential buyers.

If Todd + company would listen more to the true fans the result might be a messed/buggy game, but at least it would have a soul, instead we're less role playing for more action. Don't worry though, soon enough a new game will come by to fill in the void left by TES.

We've got a Spear Sighting, now all I need is my medium armor oh wait they took that away too.

I never played Morrowind so I can't really say if I want Spears in or out but from what I heard about them in Morrowind they were pretty good. I'll take a 1st day DLC of a Spear Replica so that we can stop crying about it.

Thats great and all, but Skyrim has more RPG elements than Oblivion - so it was all kinda pointless to write up. Oh I see what you did, you cherry picked the removed stuff but neglected the systems specifically designed to replace that stuff, or new additions altogether :banghead:

Whinning about levitation and spears when they confirmed more weapons and more diverse spells than Oblivion is selfish. More is more, too bad if its not specifically what YOU wanted.
