Why there aren't any spears

Post » Sat Oct 23, 2010 11:52 am

For one thing, I searched the forum for "spears" and got 34 pages of hits. Then I searched the forum, thread titles only, for "spears" and got 0 hits. I'm amazed that there aren't any threads specifically for them, and I don't want to dig through 34 pages to find a few buried posts that are relevant. So I created this. So please don't go on the "not this again" rant, because as far as I can tell, this is the first thread directly on point.

Another thing, I know this was probably argued ad nauseum back in the days of Oblivion's release. Well, I wasn't here then and so I don't know what the arguments were or what the consensus might have been. If you were, and you do know, please feel free to share and bring me up to speed.

That said, why aren't there any spears?

I'm not arguing that Bethesda should put them in (even though I do think they should). I'm asking why they don't. Nobody removes something from a game for no reason. Spears differ from things like Levitation or Attributes. Those things are complex systems that would need to be overhauled to work well. So the easy way out, just axe them. But Spears aren't like that, they aren't so complex that you would need to invest hundreds of hours into the game to make them work.

So what's the argument? I can't believe Todd just doesn't like them, so took them out. I also can't believe there's a lore argument for it, since spears are one of the most ancient weapons discovered to be made by man, and were used in one form or another right up to the golden age of gunpowder. So, as one of the most ubiquitous weapons of all time, why take them out?

If any of you know the reasoning, please share. Please share your speculations as well.

Please do NOT just start whining and griping about stupid nonsense or throwing insults at people.

I believe that they where taken out because fighting with a spear is not easy. A javelin you throw but a spear requires alot of advanced animation to look accurate. It's a spear you are fighting with, not a stick.

Edit: Minor spelling error

Todd said spears are superfluous. Todd is a producer and calls the shots. Spears are not coming back.

Let's stop whining and begin studying voodoo.

As mentioned spear animations would be complicated, in addition what skill would they fall under? They aren't blades and they aren't blunt.

Why are they so wanted?

It seems to me that people want them simply because they're not there. You have the option to you fantastic magics and fantastical blades, and y'all want a sharp stick... Go figure.

Because Bethesda's smart. They're not going to waste time doing something that they know isn't going to turn out great. They'd rather use that time to perfect something more important.

There are two pages of topics in the search for "spears" in the title. Make sure you tick the "Search titles only" box under where you add the search word.

But, yeah, it is a valid topic - in line will all the other multi-repeats. :)

Why aren't there any spears? Because M'aiq made fishy sticks out of them.

Yea, I checked that box. It doesn't include parts of words, though. I searched for "spear" thinking it would also hit on "spears." Odd.

It's a grand mystery, if there ever was one.
What's not to like about spears?!

Arguably, like the OP said, one of the most popular and effective weapons of all time.

A quote from Konungaspegeln (Mirror of Kings, or some such) which is a norwegian poem of
some sort from the 13th Century:

One spear is better than two swords.

Just saying.

The main problem with spears in Morrowind was that if you wielded one, you were practically invincible, because you could run backwards at the same speed that you could run forward. That said, this changed... well, I don't know, I suppose they could be in. But they would have to work a little bit different to other weapons. I mean, a spear is a long stick, so if the enemy approach too much to you, you would have no choice. I suppose this is why spears used to be used in battles with lots of people, not in duels. I think this has to do with their lack: spears would be some kind of "auxiliar" weapon, that you would use at the beginning of the battle, while the enemy is far from you, and when he gots close, you would have to switch to another weapon.

Though I would like them to be in, and I still hope for something similar.

I would like spears because they are fun to fight with and provide an advantage when fighting other enemies with shorter reach or larger in size. When people doesn't think that a spear is a glorified quarterstaff that is.

Doesn't make sense. What difference does it make why anyone wants them? Why does anyone want anything? Blades? Because they make sense. Bows? They make sense. Spears? They make sense too.

Trying to figure out why someone would prefer one thing to another is silly, and it doesn't add to the discussion at all. I want them because I prefer them to swords. They could just as easily take hammers out, but I wouldn't want them to do that.

Hammers are far less ordinary than spears anyway.

If they cant make them good they need to be out, instead of focusing on a spear and letting the game world suffer they cast them aside and decided to put their time and energy into something more worth while. I would like to see them in if they can so I can make somebody use one nut if any part of the development is going to suffer from a weapon type then remove it and make the game great to make those who really want the spears to forget about them.

Along with this, why aren't there crossbows?!? Their animations aren't as complex as those of spears.

Source for this information please.

I am playing through Morrowind - again - atm but have chosen to use a spear as my main weapon. Getting my fill of them before Skyrim. :)

It would be like removing clubs, spears are such a basic and crucial element to the history of warfare. Stones, sticks, pointy sticks, it is one of the oldest and most used weapons ever, period. It's been the bread and butter for many melee armies and militia.

Now what does it need to be in the game for? Will it make the game more fun? Probably would, adding to variety. I'd rather see the spears brought back than some new spell effect or dual wielding even.

That being said, I can jive with the explanation that it was too difficult or eating up too many resources.

I think it is lame they are not included. But I accept it. Hopefully in some later installment.
