Why is there never a hot topic...

Why isn't there? I mean seriously that GI update is on page 5 with 400 people viewing it! that should list it as a hot topic, no?

A hot topic is I believe based on the number of posts in it - not the speed of posting or number of members reading it. As we cut topics off at 200 posts they never get to be listed as "hot". :)

Perhaps the forum's definition of a hot topic needs to be rewritten then? They're usually a good way to mark out lively discussions from glancing at a board, and this forum clearly supports them, so why not rewrite the parameters to meet the actions of the mod team?

They just seem a bit obsolete at the moment, not being able to exist and all. Like little seal threads culled just before their prime.

Yeah maybe 100 posts could be considered hot or something.

Does it really matter if a thread has a little red icon or a little blue icon? If we know that the qualifying attribute is post count, you could just check a thread with a lot of posts/pages. I think there are more pressing concerns with this board than that.

Why are threads closed when they get to 200? In particular when this is such an active forum?

I just feel that it would make easier to follow certain discussions if topics could last longer. .:)

Used to be to keep it easy on the servers, now they can handle it but generally a topic doesn't derail into spam so much if it gets re-posted every 200 posts.

Probably not, but if the feature is already supported then it wouldn't be hard to rewrite the parameters to make it a possibility on these boards

I wouldn't be bugging people about it if it had never worked on these forums at all, but if you're going to go to the effort of implementing it in the first place you may as well use it.

Wouldn't be the opposite?
A hipster can't post in a thread where there are too many posts. Way too mainstream! :P

There's been some hot topics. One intentional, one an...accident.

If anything a hot topic should be a certain posts/minute. In my mind 5 posts every year, even though a thread has 1,000 posts, does not qualify as a hot topic. 5 posts per minute on the other hand indicates a lively discussion.

Before someone points out how we can't have a 1,000 post thread: those are exaggerated examples.

Yeah maybe 100 posts could be considered hot or something.

That would be completely pointless and misleading. All continuous threads like e.g. Mass Effect thread would then 50% of the time be "normal" topics and 50% of the time they would be marked as a hot topic.

The problem is that the way a hot topic is defined on this forum is plainly and simply wrong. A topic is not hot when it reaches a certain number of replies. If a topic were considered hot when it reached 100 replies then even if it reached that number of replies by having a single reply each day it would be hot - which makes absolutely no sense. A topic is hot when it maintains gaining a certain number of posts per minute for some time. For example, for this forum it would make sense to consider a topic hot after it maintains gaining at least 0.5 posts per minute for at least half an hour. After that, if the number of posts per minute drops below 0.5 posts per minute for longer than ten minutes, the topic loses the hot status. That's approximately how hot topic recognition operates on some other forums, at least.
