As far as I know, English is a Germanic tongue which is not based on Latin. The Latin, or Romance, languages are Spanish, French, Italian, and a couple others that escape me.

Roughly speaking, the English alphabet is based on the Roman alphabet, which itself evolved based on preexisting alphabets, but the language itself is a Germanic one.
Though, sense Latin remained the official written language of the “learned” for centuries, we still inherited a lot of Latin and Latinized words in our spoken language as well.
Like the word alphabet. (An yeah, they got it from the Greeks, etc, etc…)
