Why be a thief?

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 2:04 pm

Hardly any items in the game are marked in RED. I can walk into the alchemy shop in the first city and legally take all of the ingredients on display (so long as its not worth more than 100 gold), and the shopowner wont care.

That's just an example.

Also, unlike in oblivion and fallout, in this game you're allowed to 'pick up' (hold E) and toss 'red' items around. You can toss them into a corner and then steal them where the owner can't see you.

They explicitly disallowed this in oblivion because it broke immersion and made thieving REALLY easy.
Picking up an owned item was stealing. In skyrim, the citizens don't care if you pick up their glass sword and carry it to a different room, only to steal it in privacy.

So what's the point of being a thief if you're allowed to take most of the stuff in the game without anyone caring?
There's no risk and it kill immersion and RP.

edit: Yup it was a bug. I started a new character and stuff is properly labelled as 'steal'

the stuff that is written in red are items that you cannot take legally, so if you take items with white writing it means your able to grab it without anyone caring.

and the only thing i have seen that have said (owned) next too it were the beds if they weren't yours.

Perhaps read the thread. My point is hardly any items are marked as red. I walked into an alchemy shop, like I said, and took all of her ingredients legally. The only items marked in red (as "STEAL") were a couple potions and frost salts.

It's the same when you walk into someone's house. They don't care if you take their gold, rummage through their chests, take all their food, or steal their armor. So long as its not really expensive.

Exactly, and I'd like to be caught for stealing. Without that risk, there's little fun or strategy needed to steal.

the alchemy shop im talking about is the one in whiterun. Check it out.

I can steal almost everything from people's houses. If they've got gold lying on their dresser, I can take it. They dont care.

The only things ive seen marked as 'steal' in red are some exquisite clothes, frost salts, some random items like expensive potions, and thats it.

Yeah it seems they forgot to set many items as property or they wanted to make it easier for the player. Anyway just RP your character and do what he/she would do, I tend not to steal much other than on my thief character. Well my mage grabs soulgems from time to time :whistling:

The question isn't if it's a rpg or not, Because I agree with badmonk that Skyrim absolutely is.

It's why picking up non-owned objects isn't considered stealing... I tend to agree with the OP on this subject... it's odd that you can haul around the complete inventory of a shop without interference/warning. Weapons and armor can be easily stolen and used this way. Although bear in mind that you can't sell stolen goods (maybe at the thieves guild? haven't found out yet...)

And I thought that the lower rated (< 100 septims) items could only be legally taken when you performed a quest for the shop-owner... but I might be mistaken...

Cheers people!

I would LOVE to. Thing is, if I want to steal something, I can't. Everyone's just handing me stuff. How can I steal from a shop if I'm allowed to take everything anyways? It's not stealing if you can't get caught. It's not stealing if the NPC doesn't care if you take it or not.

Search cupboard, take 10 leather straps and 19 gold. Blacksmith doesn't care, he's looking at me as I do it.

I ask him what he's selling. He's selling leather straps.

So he doesnt care if i steal them, but he'd also like me to pay money for some as well.

Ridiculous. Oblivion did this properly, as did Fallout. Why did beth take this random step back? -.- Even morrowind knew how to handle stealing

I really have no idea how you're encountering this problem. Everything inside houses/shops is red for me. Until I steal it.

Wut?

In the Alchemy shops I've visited everything counts as stealing if you take it, and if I move things around the owner berates me.

I even had one shop owner in Windhelm send thugs after me when I stole a large amount of money from his strong box, even though he didn't see me at the time..

Fun thing to do - move a bucket on the head of the shopkeeper. It will zero their line of sight, then you can take everything undetected :celebration:

The alchemy shop im talking about is, as i said already, in whiterun. Obviously there's going to be some discrepancies but my experience is that I can take almost everything so long as its not super valuable.

If you see gold on someone's nightstand, it's marked as red? No its not. So why are you saying "everything is red!"

Bueller?

I'm curious how many times I have to list the location of the place in the first example.

Yes even the one in Whiterun. Logic would suggest I've probably been in Whiterun's alchemy shop, seeing as it's the very first city.

What you have must be some odd bug, or you have some kind of relationship with them which classes you as a friend, that's the only reason I could think of which would allow you to simply take things.

..and to answer an earlier post, yes even Gold on a nightstand is listed in red in my game, but obviously doesn't stay in red once I've taken it.

EDIT: editing your post won't save the fact you're wrong about me misreading you.

there's a thieves guild that gives great proft for thieves for stealing specific items. being a thief also makes it possible to pickpocket an enemies weapon from their hands before they've seen you and force them to use their fists. (if the master perk actually works as I think it does, I'm not that masterful pickpocketeer anyways).

However, the question 'why be a thief' could be asked about many things in Skyrim, and other games too. Some like it and it does add to the game. The more options the better. I'm looking forward to pay a complete stealth skill tree character, who only takes perks from stealth skills and doesn't use magic and such. (I will be using a dagger, but no bow). The thief aspect comes as I pickpocket everything from everyone and make everyone my fences with speechcraft. :)

I wanted to be a thief at first, Pickpocketing, Speech, Lockpick, Sneak all seemed really cool. Sadly that leaves absolutely no room whatsoever for any combat oriented skills so I didn't bother in the end.

So it's only in one city that you've found this out?

What about all the other little towns, villages, and cities?

If anything, some of the comments in this thread basically demonstrate that some people will complain about anything.

Skyrim is a role-playing game, just as much as the previous entries in the Elder Scrolls series, you just must not understand what an RPG actually is. It's not about the stats or skill choices, it's how you shape your own character's story according to how you play through the game. Stats do not make an RPG, they're just one of the typical conventions of RPGs.

In mine, only some of the people who like my character allow him to take whatever he wants, most people's belongings are marked as owned for me.

But I guess because it's not that way for you, the game must be broken, huh?

By the way, in Fallout 3 and New Vegas, stealing works the same way. You can pick up items without taking them, go around the corner, and then take them without being seen. Only in Oblivion were you not allowed to mess with objects in any fashion whatsoever, unless you blasted them around the room with a destruction spell. You must not have played Fallout or else your memory is a bit more fuzzy than you'd like.

Seems im not the only one experiencing this

To the poster above me, this is not a whine-thread. Tone down your flaming and defenses. You're going to derail this thread into more mindless jabber about the topics you randomly brought up. Who the heck is talking about the definition of "RPG"? Stop derailing, I won't have any of that. Thank you.

Back on topic:

I'm now curious to know if this is a bug, or a strange speechcraft or relationship mechanic. I shouldn't be able to waltz into a house and open cupboards and take loose gold, but I can.

I'm wondering if this is how it's supposed to be, if the 'stealing' tag gets more strict depending on how much the owner likes you, or if its a bug.
