Both the Imperials and the Redguards have a very good reason to ally with Ulfric: the Thalmor would bulldoze a divided human race so it is in all their interests to work together despite not being natural partners.

And yes; season unending is canon, but I fail to see how that's relevant. It's a temporary truce that ends as soon as Alduin is stopped.
