Why was playing a mage so hard?

Hello

First of all, im a new - generation gamer of Morrowind and purchased the game back in mid - 2012. But I haven't until know really given it the proper time it needs. I've had a string of small - time characters who, for one reason or another, fizzled into blissful retirement.

People warn you about how much more different combat is, but it never really hit me hard. I had a bosmer archer, Dandelion, who was purpose - built. But she came to some VERY surprising conclusions...I wont go on about how great, who deep, and simply put how massive this game is, and how not once have a felt the slightest twinge to turn to mods to improve something.

Rolling forward to about a month ago, my playthrough with Oblivvion came to a premature conclusion (DID) and, not being in the mood to return to Uthred, Lord of Winstad in his frozen home of Skyrim I instead went east to Morrowind.

Although I had dabbled in magic, the Altmer male I created was the first purpose - built mage I have created for Morrowind. He was born under the sign of the mage.

I didn't expect it to be easy, but I have to confess it has been a long hard struggle. Battling against those crushing magicka point costs and dismal "% chance" (And no I wasn't attempting to cast 1000 fire damage for 5 seconds on target) was hard. Very hard. I got ultra- economical on my spell costs. Not to mention frequently resting for 20+ hours in locked rooms of dwemer ruins to recharge my magicka pool. Even as my destruction hit 90 I still felt like I could only cast pretty basic spells. I could, for 25 points of magicka cast a frost spell of 50 points damage, on touch.

So, Morrowind has by far the greatest amount of spell of the three modern releases. It feels rather like being in this amazing sweet shop but not having the money to pay for all the goodies.

What are your thoughts on this? I mean, I didn't ever give up, at ultimately, I don't regret being a mage. But I felt a little like it was too harder system. We could of seen point reductions once you reached bench marks in a skill i.e. 50/100

Anyway, I still think it was a great experience. Thanks Morrowind.

Two words to make it easy: Absorb Health

Mages can be difficult a the start, but they easily become very powerful later in the game. The spell chance also can be annoying, but later becomes negligible as your skills get over 60.
Most people use a mod that adds some regen to the Magicka, as that can be a big problem at the start of the game.

The biggest secret to creating a powerful mage is to know the tricks of how to use the Spell Creator to it's fullest. You can make powerful spells that cost very little. Not to mention creating your own Enchantments can be OP in the same way.

Basically, the main reason you struggled with it was because you're relatively new to the game, and definitely new to the magic system's potential
