Why was the tribunal able to use Kagrenac's tools safely?

Although it isn't totally clear, the disappearance of the dwarves was definitely related to the use of the heart of lorkhan to create a god. Trying to do this destroyed the entire race, so why were Vivec, Sotha Sil and Almalexia able to do essentially the same thing without poofing all of the Chimer? Also, not totally related, but did Azura reject this because there was something profane even to a daedra about exploiting the heart, or because it allowed the tribunal to eclipse her in influence over the dunmer?

I'm pretty sure it had to do with all their profanities or something like that. They had done stuff similar to using the tools over and over again, and this was one time too many- their race just happened to be at an uber-dramatic battle when the straw broke the camel's back. If anyone knows what I'm talking about but remembers more clearly, please help explain.

I'm serious, I know this theory and I'm convinced it's the right one, but I can't remember the details.

Actually, the Tribunal was able to use the tools safely because they weren't trying to use Numidium, but to tap into the powers of the Heart of Lorkhan itself to grant themselves a quasi-divinity state (i'm not calling them gods, because they can't do the same kind of stuff that the Aedra or Daedra can on their home planes.) Basically, the Dwemer dissapeared because they attempted to create an artificial god (Numidium), and had used the Dwarven Race as a means to complete it. The Tribunal thought the Numidium was trash, and instead focused on its power source, to achieve divinity. Subtle difference, but it's there.

As for Azura, it's partly because the Tribunal took worshippers away from her, and partially because they swore to Nerevar under Azura to NOT use the tools of Kargenac. Breaking an oath to a Daedra is *not* a smart thing to do.

And to Trussing... you've got your facts a bit messed up. The Dwemer used Numidium (and the tools) ONCE; the War of the First Council was because they were creating Numidium in the first place. The Tribunal used the heart on a yearly basis, to (either ritually or actually) renew their "divinity." That was until about 50 or so years before Morrowind takes place, when Dagoth Ur ambushed them and stole Keening and Sunder.

Most likely, the Tribunal were trying to achieve something distinctly different from what Kagrenac was trying to achieve.

I suppose that distinction makes sense, Marss, though I don't totally understand why the Dwemer wanted to make a golem-God in the first place rather than elevating their leaders to godlike stature like the Tribunal did.

That reminds me, why did the Tribunal hold Numidium in such low regard? Even though they were unable to use it, it struck me as odd that they turned it over willingly to Tiber Septim. Did they know that he would be able to use it and, if so, did they want him to use it against the Aldmeri Dominion?
