Why wasn't Pittsburgh bombed?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 3:02 pm

Seeing as how it was a major industrial city and steel manufacturer, it would definitely be a priority target of a east coast nuclear strike. Or maybe they realized the converging of the rivers would lead to uber amounts of radiation, making a strike unnecessary.

How does it look not bombed to you? Well, I've visited a heavily destroyed Pitt, with lots and lots of rubble and broken buildings. ^_^

Yes, but the lore claims it wasn't actually hit, just poisoned by rads in the rivers. (Which are, admittedly, super-hot in game - like, hotter than outside Vault 87. I TCLed off the bridge once and didn't get ten yards.)
I agree with the OP: not likely.

Well it was not hit by a nuke, but otherwise it seems heavily destroyed, as there are many kinds of possible uses for ICBMs, I don't think it was never targeted by any kind of bomb. Sure, no reason to literally nuke the place, since there's nothing that could counter with nuclear bombardment in that city, but otherwise it looks as heavily hit as downtown DC.

Yes Pittsburgh would of course be a highly important industrial target. The steel mills there can produce parts for almost any form of military vehicles , weapons and gear.

As i pointed out in another thread there are lots of possibilites why a important target might not get hit in a nuclear war.

Bombers and missiles get shot down before reaching their targets , missile bases get nuked before being able to launch their missiles, technical faults result in duds or premature detonation....

One of these is propably the explanation on why Pittsburgh was not hit.

The few collapsed buildings and the relatively little damage may be the result of nukes going off nearby, .. i dont know... is there something important nearby Pittsburgh ? Maybe a larger military installation of some sort ?

They can also have collapsed due to lack of maintenance over 200 years.

You also cannot assume that any of the launches in the Great War had any tactical significance. So whether Pittsburgh would be considered a prime target or not is largely irrelevant.

I assumed it was not directly hit, but there were hits nearby. I could be wrong. It's certainly more than neglect that turned skyscraqers to rubble... a nearby nuclear explosion is likely.

I was wandering why it looked so...Untouched, And I'm surprised the fact that modders haven't made it more effected or something, atleast added a vault, or something of the sort.. Grant-it that its DLC and A lot of users do not have it...

It really would be perfect for mods... add a vault, a small settlement outside the city, sewers under the city, etc.. It really is a cool area and perfect for expansion... I wish Bethesda made The Pitt an expansion, actually, rather than a DLC.

That said I don't really use mods at all and am almost surely "going console" soon, so I guess it matters little.

Well, according to Life after People, 200 years of neglect is all it would take for most skyscraqers to become piles of rubble..

I think people give way to much credit to the stability of construction in the last 100 years or so. The show is actually rather accurate, without constant care, MOST buildings, even those that were built in the 50's with older construction methods, would be in the process of falling a part on their own simply due to weather.

yeah it seems very...small to me, with just 5 areas? why didnt Beth use all of the city? most of it seem to wasted use of space as far as i got into it.

IT being a major city their is a chance that it was hit a few times or the commies thought they shouldint wast a nuke on it. But before the brotherhood arrived to D.C. they went through the pit killing and destroying every thing so thats why its is in rubble now.

But Japan was bombed by people in planes looking through a scope...

The world in FO universe was bombed by missiles with GPS coordinates that could attack regardless of weather...
