Why will you buy skyrim? Or why not?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 12:09 am

Summer really ought to get a dedication thread now. One of the moderators on the Thief 4 boards has had one and it really was lovely to read the reaction.

As for Skyrim, it's an entertainment product, not an essential purchase. I loved Morrowind, enjoyed Daggerfall and am warming to Arena. Oblivion for me was a disapointment and compared to the first two Fallouts, Fallout 3 was a big letdown. New Vegas' announcement left nothing but a sense of torpor towards it in me after playing Fallout 3.

Skyrim is moving in some interesting directions, not necessarily directions I would like. If the final form the game take seems overall disapointing to me the I see no reason to feel obliged to purchase.

That said, if Steam, a platform I've had nothing but trouble with is required then it would likely rule out playing the game altogether. The insousiance over the issue of DRM displayed by the developer is another turnoff, unless I suddenly develop a streak of maschism and the game is available for under £5. Without those circumstances I see no reason to not happily continue playing Morrowind and be £30 - £40 richer at the same time.

WEll, I'll certainly be buying - on the day of release

It seems to me that anyone intending not to buy it, and still wasting their time on this forum, needs to get a life

Agreed. Anybody who is already saying they won't but it straight off should not be here.

Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion...I love them all, so naturally I'm going to buy Skyrim too...as soon as it's available. Even if Bethesda would somehow manage to screw up the game, I'm getting the PC version as mods can improve/fix pretty much anything.

I like fantasy series like TES with many diffferent kinds of races. Any fantasy series where there is only humans/elves just bores me. I like reptiles, so naturally I play an Argonian in this series. The thing that they aren't described as an evil race is also a big plus. Lizardmen are too often evil in all fantasy series.

Well said - Summer is an asset to the community and is a very good moderator.
I too am concerned with the direction of TES series: I started with Arena and have them all, including Battlespire and Redguard. With the use of Steam for FO3-NV and most likely Skyrim, I will take the wait and see mode also.

Anyways, i'm pretty sure everyone on this forum will buy this game, even the people who love to whine, in the end they will buy the game.

I used to have people say that to me on the Civilization forums when I complained about the move to Steam with version 5. Then after keeping an eye on the forums for awhile, I realized that it was a crappy game anyway and I still don't have it, and likely never will. So don't be too sure about your prediction, there's going to be alot of people here sitting on the fence for awhile after it's release, until they can be assured that it really is worthwhile getting past the things they don't like. I may end up getting the GOTY edition, and probably will, but if it turns out to be a horribly bug ridden game with very poor gameplay, I won't bother even then. I'll need alot more than just shiny graphics if I'm going to pay money for this game, and the kinds of things I'll be looking for won't be apparent until it's been released and a number of people have played it for awhile. The game will already have a big mark against for me with the use of Steam as a form of DRM. It won't take that much for me to pass it over completely.

This is not even a question really. I will buy it because it is the elder scrolls, made by bethesda, and this game WILL be the best game of 2011.

As of now I plan on buying it when it comes out although I may not. It depends on what's coming out around November, how great everything else looks/is and what my buddies are getting really. svcks to play a game when you're the only one that owns it, aside from RPG's.

I will buy it even, if there are no magic weapon effects :D, because...well come on no other game is even trying to be this good, the witcher 2, well its going to be good but its still a cRPG, its got all that 1 click game play still, I mean Skyrim is just the closest we have come to getting a full GAME, I mean like a fantasy version of the X series, which failed because they were too focused on boring trading stuff, ok Im losing my point, but what I'm saying is that all the rpgs ever made should add up to a game like skyrim, or rather an eventual perfected TES game

You do realize that cRPG stands for Computer Role Playing Game, which is also what Skyrim is going to be as well.

I still stand buy my statement. How can someone have the opportunity to moderate the beth forums if they are not even going to buy their cornerstone game.

What the... nobody has to buy and or play the game if they don't want to.

I will be buying Skyrim as soon as I see it available for purchase. Skyrim and Doom 4 are the 2 games I'm most looking forward to. Everything else can rot. haha.

And how does that follow? Bethesda has more games than just Skyrim. I'm sure there's some Fallout players who have never even looked at a TES game, and are here in this thread simply because they're curious. It's pretty small minded to think that Skyrim is the only game that people here are interested in. The Fallout forums are the first place I go to in fact, because I enjoy Fallout 3 much more than Oblivion. Frankly, if Skryim ends up playing out like Oblivion I probably won't be buying it. I keep getting really bored with the game once I get to a certain level. I'm at level 18 in my current game and I can only play in short doses before I start thinking, "Been there, done that."

If they implement dismemberment and don't have an option to disable it, I won't buy it until a dismemberment-disabling mod is released.

If they include sixual acts in the game, I won't buy it no matter what.

Otherwise, I will buy it, hopefully off of Steam.

What, are you an uber-Christian? And I'm buying it cuz it's pimptacular.

I will buy it because i'm a TES fan and i've gotten a ridiculous amount of entertainment out of the other games in the series. Which i dont expect to change with Skyrim.

I'm from the US, but I don't like our system of measurement... It's outdated, and the only reason we keep it is because the older generations are too stubborn to change it from what they are used to. Personally, I prefer the metric system, and when I date things, I prefer to do DD-MM-YY, like the rest of the world. Also, the military here in the US dates things that way, not the standard way.

But to stay on-topic... I am always surprised when I read things from people who are more disturbed that there might be some sixuality in the game than they are about dismemberment and violence.... I'm fairly moderate in my conservatism, but I think the western world is very backwards. I'm not all for sixuality, so please don't assume that this is me being that way--I just think violence and cruelty should sooner disturb you than a couple of people sharing passion and intimacy... Seems rather silly... But if you can mod out violence and gore, I would think you could also do the same with sixuality, if it is that disturbing to you...

To your first point, I hear you, but as I said there are reasons for not switching over that go far beyond "old people being stubborn". Do you have any idea how costly it would be for us switch to the metric system? You are talking trillions of dollars of our taxpayer money (that we already don't have). We are not only a very populated country, but one that is very geographically large and spread out.

Most countries started out with a different system of measurement and switched to metric, but for a country like England to switch to metric would be the equivalent of ONE of our 50 states switching over. Millions of road signs would have to be switched , billions of products have labeling changed, thousands of businesses and industries would have to change their standard of measurement. Billions, if not trillions of tools, nuts, bolts, etc would have to be switched over. Even something as simple as changing the time and date would require tons of reprogramming our systems at my business alone.

And all this for what? So we can "fit in" and stop being mocked by the rest of the world? I really don't see the value for the cost there. I agree metric is a smarter system, but I think we might have to wait for a more prosperous time. I am just so sick of everyone who doesn't understand the ramifications calling us stupid for being stuck in our ways, when that is not at all the case. Most of us actually use metric alongside the imperial system so it is, in essence, being gradually adopted.

Anyway, sorry for the long rant. As to your second point (and back on topic), 100% agree! I can't tell you how annoying it is to hear parents freak out that their children might see a bit of human skin that is typically covered, but then have no problem letting them chop people up in games and watch violent movies. I really think that is due to the older generation clinging to their ways.

Haven't finished reading the thread, but, STEAM?!?!
Gonna' have to phone home to install?!?!
Please tell me it ain't so...

I won't deal with Steam anymore. After taking almost 2 hours to ALLOW ME TO START Half-Life 2 whenever I installed it....

NO THANKS. And that was on a good DSL connection.
If I buy something, I want to own it.

Argh Matey. Ye' be leavin a man little choice...

ETA: Plus leaving all kinds of crap all over my computer....and making it difficult to play without jumping through hoops about being connected whenever I started it up. Screw that.

The EULA you agree to, when you install any game gives you the right to use it, NOT own it.
