Why I wont buy the game guide

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 5:01 pm

So i learned the hard way why not to buy any future fallout game guides. My story takes place a couple days after Christmas 2010, i just received Fallout new vegas, some other games and some other stuff from my grandparents along with $100. So i went to the local wal-mart and bought a game guide for $25. at first i loved it, it felt like nothing stood in my way because i knew everything. But shortly after, i was depressed. The game guide ruined alot of surprises for me. And if i needed help, i couldve just gone the internet. So to sum it up, never buy a game guide.

Pretty much. The wikis help a lot more than a game guide. The guides are pretty much just a collector item.

Usually I agree but I think New Vegas is an exception.

Why? Because knowing everything helps you have a more in-depth philosophical debate with yourself. There's a lot of points being made within the game and having them all collected at your fingertips in a wiki or gameguide helps you remember all the points made, or where to look them up in-game. The weapons are also not so easy to judge by face value, so it's nice to have the stats on their spread, crit stat, etc so you can decidewhich is right for your character instead of spending hours testing each and trying to deduce the stats of each.

Having said that, these days everything has a wiki, so I doubt game guides live much longer.

Most information in game guides can also be found free online eventually. 25$ for a game guide is absurd, that's half the cost of many new AAA releases.

This probably isn't the right forum though, it's not really about Fallout.

Yeah, game guides are not worth it. Aside from a lot of the info being on the Internet for free, game guides also often have out-of-date information, if the guide was prepared before release and some features were changed. Some guides also intentionally omit some info.

The only game guides I've bought where I didn't feel cheated were the ones I bought for Pokemon FireRed/Leafgreen and Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, and that's only because of the handy Pokedex.

Yes. The pokemon game guides were always good. I had one for Gen 1 with pokemon Yellow. It was great. And some other guides for later games too.

The Fallout game guide is more of a collector's item.

I like the dungeon maps. The ones in-game rarely help in any way

God Knowledge. Never buy them. The last one I bought was for Nightmare Creatures for the PS1 in like 1998/99? I'm glad I bought the one for Killer Instinct though, details all the Ultra Combo triggers. Welcome to 1995.

I loved KI. I could never figure out how to Ultra Combo. I would just try different moves and sometimes they will become Ultra Combos. Also couldn't combo break. :(

I wasn't great at combo breaking either. I had the Ultra's down though. I don't know how people got like 100+ hit combo's though. Best I could get was with Orchid and that was like 48hits.

She was broken. Infinite combos up the butt! That Killer Instinct game guide would be a pretty collector's item.

Also OP, you could have not read the guide until you got stuck. It's kinda implied that game guides have spoilers.

Haha, if anything, the internet is even worse at not spoiling plot twists. Most people are cool about not spoiling the plot but you only need one loose butthole to ruin in for you.

Yeah, somebody just did that the other day on here. First freakn' sentence of his post, he tells how a major quest ends, that I haven't finished. Before I knew what I was reading it was too late. It didn't even have anything to do with the thread. It was just like... 'Hey, think I'll just make a random post disclosing a major quest, with zero warning... for no logical reason'.

I never use the guides. Maybe only after I play the crap out of something and then want to find whatever I missed. But that's it. Or if I like a game enough that I just want to have it as a reminder. Which is the case with Fallout.

Yes, I agree with you that it ruins the surprises of the game. So from experience from previous games such as Fallout 3 In which I also bought the guide and used it straight off. I loved the darn thing, it gave me tremendous knowledge about everything but after a good 10 hours or so I hated my guide it ruined the game. So what I did for FO:NV is have a complete runthrough of the game guide-less and then start a new character and use the guide to find all of the items I did not find in my previous save file. Actually it was pretty fun to see all I missed. So that's what I recommend you doing

The good thing for me about game guides though is, it lets me finish the game, to put it down so I can continue life and not be on one game forever lol. It takes me a few years to complete a game like this, with or without the guide (I use online guides anyways).

I would suggest the wiki because you can do a search on it so you don't run into a butthole like dave did.

This may sound stupid but I read mny guide after I finish the game for the side quest. I'd never use a guide for the main story unless I am really, really stuck.

Nah not stupid. I like to play the game first, then look at guides. Reduces spoilers and helps me enjoy the game better.

Except in the case of Pokemon. I kinda like to know where the Master Ball is located so I don't accidentally like I did on pokemon ruby. :/

Nope, wasn't you.

Online guides are good when you get stuck, because most have a contents list, so you can skip to the section you need. If you have the book, it's hard to resist reading other parts.

The Legion lore from the guide is interesting in how different it is in some parts, so I'd buy the guide for any future Fallout simply for that and concept art.

I think its only real use is as a collector's item: Having a book with some nice info and pictures in it.

But for any specific information, hints or guides you might need for the actual game, it's much easier to look things up on the internet. Internet websites like the wiki are also more up to date with DLC info, bugs and workarounds, etc.
